CONTEXT: Spinal cord injury is a complex and long-term condition that profoundly affects individuals across physical, emotional, social, and economic domains. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the multidimensional structure of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), incorporating patients' perspectives and extending the scope to include economic benefits and disease-related barriers. METHODS: Using a grounded theory approach, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 32 adult patients receiving care at a public physiotherapy hospi…

A grounded theory study in blended learning of the facilitation of role transition from compliant learners to collaborative partners regarding non-verbal behavior.

BACKGROUND: In blended learning environments, college students often remain silent in face-to-face classrooms yet actively engage in online collaborative settings. This gap reflects a shift in learner identity from "compliant learners" to "collaborative partners." However, little is known about how non-verbal behaviors drive this identity transition. METHODS: This study employed a grounded theory approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 college students, supplemented by WeChat chat logs and collaborative document revision histories, and analyzed using three-level codi…

Meanings and Experiences of Prisoners and Family Members Affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic in a Brazilian Prison Unit: A Grounded Theory Analysis.

Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic represented a health emergency for prisons. This study sought to understand the meanings and experiences through the narratives of prisoners and family members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of a maximum-security state penitentiary complex in southern Brazil. For this purpose, a qualitative study was developed based on the methodological framework of constructivist grounded theory. Data were collected between February and August 2022 through individual in-depth interviews and field notes. The sample consisted of 41 participants: 28 male prison…

Taking the reins: A grounded theory study of women's experiences of negotiating water immersion for labour and birth after a previous caesarean section.

BACKGROUND: Women seeking a vaginal birth after a caesarean section (VBAC) frequently want to keep their subsequent labour and birth free from intervention. Water immersion (WI) during labour is potentially an effective tool for women having a VBAC for its natural pain-relieving properties. However, negotiating access to WI can be difficult, especially in the context of VBAC. AIM: To explore women's experiences of negotiating WI for labour and birth in the context of VBAC. METHODOLOGY: This Grounded Theory study followed Strauss and Corbin's framework and analytic process. Twenty-five women …

Experience of Aging-In-Place in Older Adults Living Alone With Chronic Disease in Rural Areas in South Korea: A Grounded Theory Approach.

Rural areas in South Korea lack adequate healthcare facilities, and many older people wish to continue living in their current environment despite these challenges. This study derives a substantive theory on the aging-in-place process among older people living alone with chronic diseases in rural areas. Purposeful and theoretical sampling were used to select 18 participants. In-depth interviews were conducted over 3 months, and data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory method. Twelve categories and 28 subcategories were identified, with the core category being "enduring inc…

'Staying strong': A constructivist grounded theory of how registered nurses deal with the impact of trauma-related events in rural acute care practice.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study explored how Registered Nurses (RNs) in rural practice deal with psychologically traumatic events when living and working in the same rural community over time. BACKGROUND: Rural RNs who are exposed to trauma may be at high risk for psychological distress (e.g. secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder), in the context of isolated practice and slower emergency response times. DESIGN AND METHODS: Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory methodology was chosen for this qualitative study. Purposeful sampling was used to recru…

Think Like a Surgeon: Piloting a Liver Surgery Course Grounded in Adult Learning Theories for Junior Surgical Residents.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a heterogeneous group of pulmonary disorders that can result in acute or chronic forms of respiratory failure. Prior studies have shown high mortality among patients with ILD receiving intensive care, but most have focused on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and have not characterized other ILD subgroups. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does 90-day transplant-free survival differ by ILD subgroup in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring respiratory support? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults w

Experiences Among Patients With Cystic Fibrosis in the MucoExocet Study of Using Connected Devices for the Management of Pulmonary Exacerbations: Grounded Theory Qualitative Research.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) in patients with cystic fibrosis is important to quickly trigger treatment and reduce respiratory damage. An intervention was designed in the frame of the MucoExocet research study providing patients with cystic fibrosis with connected devices and educating them to detect and react to their early signs of PEx. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the contributions and conditions of home monitoring in relation to their care teams from the users' point of view to detect PEx early and treat it. This study focused on the patients' exp

Resuming Normal Life as a Family Caregiver During Drip-Like Recovery of Older Persons With Cognitive Impairment Recovering From Hip Surgery: A Grounded Theory.

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to develop a theoretical framework explaining family caregiving processes for older persons with cognitive impairment recovering from hip fracture surgery. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this grounded theory study, data were collected in audio-recorded face-to-face interviews with 21 family caregivers. Among these caregivers, 14 cared for hip-fractured persons with cognitive impairment, and seven cared for those without cognitive impairment. Caregivers were interviewed five times after patients' discharge: at 1 week and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Data were analyzed …

A Mixed Methods Examination of Sleep Throughout the Alcohol Recovery Process Grounded in the Social Cognitive Theory: The Role of Self-Efficacy and Craving.

Sleep disturbances can accompany alcohol use disorders during various phases of the disease. This analysis utilized a mixed methods approach to assess whether sleep-related beliefs and/or behavior of individuals who are alcohol dependent were associated with sleep quality both pre- and postdischarge from a clinical research facility providing inpatient alcohol rehabilitation treatment. Individuals with higher self-efficacy for sleep (SE-S) reported better sleep quality at both time points. Individuals with fewer dysfunctional beliefs about sleep had poorer sleep quality at both time points. In

"Fragmented care pathway in a layered TB care system": a grounded theory approach to understand care pathways and delays in TB care in Odisha.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a significant public health challenge in India, accounting for one-fourth of the global burden. Complex social, economic and behavioural factors among people affected by TB, combined with health system factors, shape care pathways and contribute to delays in TB care. OBJECTIVES: Given this background, the study aimed to develop a constructivist grounded theory explaining how people affected by TB navigate care pathways and experience delays in two contrasting districts of Odisha. METHODS: Adopting a constructivist grounded theory approach, the study was conducte…

Striving for Improved Infection Prevention and Control Practice: A Grounded Theory of Healthcare Workers' Struggles in Implementing Infection Prevention and Control Guidance in Uganda.

There is a scarcity of qualitative research focusing on the implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) guidance in low-income countries. This study aimed to address this gap by exploring the perspectives of healthcare workers (HCWs) regarding the implementation of IPC guidance at the healthcare facility level in Uganda. The study also sought to generate a theoretical understanding of the processes involved in implementing IPC guidance in these settings. This robust qualitative research employed a design based on constructivist grounded theory methodology, conducting individual in…
