BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus pathologies are a potential risk for failure of implant and bone augmentation. Management of lateral sinus floor elevation in the presence of a pseudocyst remains controversial, and reports on histological outcomes of endo-sinus bone augmentation with maxillary cysts are scarce.
PURPOSE: To present a modified surgical technique for removal of maxillary pseudocyst with simultaneous sinus floor elevation, and to evaluate clinical and histological outcomes of the bone grafting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with a radiographic dome-shaped opacity in the posterior m

Maxillary sinus floor elevation carries the potential risk of compromising the sinus physiology. The aim of this study was to prospectively assess mucociliary function during maxillary sinus augmentation in patients without preoperative signs of maxillary sinusitis. Ten patients underwent unilateral sinus floor elevation under local anesthesia and endoscopic control. Methylene blue was dropped on the floor of the maxillary sinus to evaluate mucociliary function until the ostium region during sinus augmentation. The drainage of methylene blue was noticed in the lateral, medial, posterior, and a

PURPOSE: Antral pseudocysts classically have a well-defined, hyperdense, unilocular, dome-shaped appearance in radiographs. The best therapeutic approach for treating these cysts in the context of sinus floor augmentation remains controversial. This article presents a new technique that allows both sinus membrane elevation and cyst removal through a crestal approach in patients with pseudocysts in the maxillary sinus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The technique combined aspiration of the cysts during sinus floor elevation with a sinus augmentation procedure using a hydraulic sinus elevation system. …

PURPOSE: Sinus floor elevation via the lateral window approach represents a reliable technique for bone augmentation in the atrophic posterior maxilla. It is known that sinus membrane elevation leads to new bone formation. This prospective clinical study compared a specific technique in sinus membrane elevation with a conventional sinus floor augmentation (xenogenous/autogenous bone) in a human split mouth model.
METHODS: Five edentulous patients with highly atrophic posterior maxillae were included in this study. On one maxillary side a degradable PDLLA-membrane was placed to create a space …

Sinus floor elevation can be done by lateral maxillary approach or crestal approach by osteotome techniques as a function of residual bone height. The osteotome technique has been developed for minor sinus floor elevation. This is a method with relatively high predictability but is technically demanding. During the past decade, different osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation techniques have been developed to augment the sinus for predictable implant placement. All these methods aim to access a better, predictable sinus augmentation with low morbidity. Some of these techniques require specia

BACKGROUND: While middle antrostomy (MA) is the most common approach to the maxillary sinus (MS), it is known for not allowing to fully inspect the whole MS, especially in its inferior and anterior portions. To overcome this limitation, alternative approaches have been proposed, such as inferior antrotomy (IA) and canine fossa accesses (CFA).
OBJECTIVE: Given the lack of studies on the MS floor visualization with different accesses, our study aims, in a cadaver lab setting, to systematically compare three different approaches (MA, IA and CFA) in these regards.
METHODS: Eight cadaver heads, p

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the differences of membrane thickness and pressure on the paranasal sinus membrane in goats and analyze their causes. The results can provide theoretical basis and guidance for the issues of the maxillary sinus floor augmentation related to the membrane.
METHODS: The membrane was cut into two sizes from every sinus membrane. The membrane was fixed in formalin to obtain tissue specimens for the membrane thickness study and pressure study. The correlation between the two parameters was then analyzed, and appropriate statistical methods and software were se…

BACKGROUND: Sinus augmentation is a key procedure in implant dentistry for managing vertical bone loss in the posterior maxilla. However, conventional techniques may present limitations in precision, complication management, and ergonomics. The operating microscope has been introduced to enhance precision during procedures performed in anatomically complex maxillary sinus regions. This review aims to examine the fundamental principle, clinical application, and instrumentation of microscope-assisted sinus augmentation, with a focus on lateral and transcrestal approaches, and to evaluate current

The posterior maxillary segment frequently exhibits insufficient bone mass to support dental implants. Sinus floor augmentation enables implant placement in the posterior maxilla. This case series included ten sites, in which sinus floor elevation was done using sinus lift balloon system followed by augmentation utilizing irradiated cancellous bone allograft. Postoperative radiographic assessment of vertical bone gain was done at 3 and 6 months follow-up period. The mean initial and final bone height were 6.16 and 10.50 mm, respectively, with a mean increase of 4.34 mm at 6 months being observ…

PURPOSE: Sinus membrane perforation is the most common intraoperative complication of maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) procedures and frequently causes postoperative problems. Piezoelectric devices have been claimed to reduce the frequency of membrane perforations although no clear evidence supports this view.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten surgeons with different expertise levels performed 80 MSFEs in selected lamb heads, with rotary and piezoelectric instruments following standard protocols. After the procedures, specimens were coded and perforations or tears determined through a microsco

BACKGROUND: Surgical techniques as sinus floor augmentation have made it possible to increase the bone volume of the posterior maxilla so that implant placement may be feasible. A large variety of bone grafting materials have been utilized for sinus floor augmentation. A good alternative is allograft. Fresh frozen bone is harvested from live or cadaveric donors and then immediately frozen and stored at -80 °C. To date, studies about the effect of fresh frozen bone are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of new bone formation, following maxillary sinus grafting with autograft vs. fresh frozen allogr…
