Spectroscopic and complementary thermodynamic study of liquid, supercooled, and glassy state of ethylene glycol.

Raman and IR spectroscopy were employed to uncover coalesced/unresolved peaks in the liquid, glassy, and crystalline phases of ethylene glycol (EG) in a temperature range of +24 to -160 °C. The temperature-resolved O-H stretching mode of supercooled EG exhibited continuous changes throughout the studied temperature range, including below the glass transition temperature (Tg = -121 °C). Conversely, the C-H stretching spectrum showed no significant variation within the same temperature range, indicating a complex synchronous change in the C-H⋯O and O-H⋯O bonds. Effects of tertiary amine local anaesthetics on the phase behaviour of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine model membrane. Electron spin resonance tetrametylpiperidinyloxyl partition study.

Using the electron spin resonance technique of the spin probe (TEMPO) is shown that local anaesthetics lidocaine, tetracaine, dibucaine, heptacaine and carbizocaine decrease the gel--liquid crystal phase transition temperature and increase the width of the phase transition of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) model membrane. These effects roughly correlate with the efficiencies of the anesthetics to block action potential propagation in the nerves.

Study of gamma ray response of R404A superheated droplet detector using a two-state model.

The superheated droplet detector (SDD) is known to be gamma ray insensitive below a threshold temperature which made them excellent candidates for neutron detection in the presence of gamma rays. Above the threshold temperature, the gamma ray detection efficiency increases with increase in temperature. In this work the gamma ray threshold temperature has been studied for SDD using R404A as the active liquid and is compared to the theoretical prediction. The temperature variation of gamma ray detection efficiency and interstate transition kinetics has also been studied using a two-state model.
