OBJECTIVE: The current evidence for fibrin glue as a treatment for anal fistulae is mixed. This study reviews the experience of fibrin glue as a treatment for anal fistulae in a single tertiary referral centre and attempts to identify factors related to failure of therapy and the length of follow-up required.
METHOD: Patients with fistulae in ano that were treated with fibrin glue between February 2004 and August 2008 were analysed. All procedures were performed by two colorectal consultants based at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. All patients were followed-up to assess the outcome of

Spontaneous or iatrogenic esophageal perforations are despite advances of modern surgery and intensive care medicine still potentially life-threatening events with a considerable mortality rate. Recently, encouraging results on the sealing of esophageal perforations by placement of endoluminal prostheses were reported. However, if the perforation is very proximal (close to the larynx) or very distal (involving the cardia), the situation is to our experience unsuitable for stent therapy. In these special cases non-operative treatment is still possible by application of hemostatic metal clips. W

PURPOSE: To evaluate the advantages of fibrin glue for opposing wound edges in Top Hat penetrating keratoplasty (PKP).
METHODS: Twenty human corneoscleral rims were mounted on an artificial anterior chamber. Eight corneas underwent traditional PKP, 6 underwent Top Hat PKP, and 6 underwent Top Hat PKP by using fibrin glue for opposing wound edges. Mechanical stability was evaluated after placement of 8 and 16 interrupted sutures. Wound bursting pressure and induced astigmatism were evaluated.
RESULTS: In the traditional PKP group, wound bursting pressure was 25.2 and 59.1 mm Hg after placemen

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of exogenous basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on in-sheathed tendon healing and adhesion formation.
METHODS: Ninety Leghorn chickens were randomly divided into 3 groups (groups A, B and C), 30 animals for each group, and the right third digitorum longus tendon of the chicken was transected to make defect models. In group A, the tendon was sutured in situ after transection. In group B, the tendon was sutured after 0.6 microl fibrin sealant (FS) was applied at repair site. In group C, the tendon was sutured after 0.6 microl FS mixed with 500 ng bFGF was ap

BACKGROUND: We studied the etiology, treatment, and outcome of enterocutaneous fistulas in 106 patients to evaluate our current practice and the impact of newer therapies-octreotide, wound vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), and fibrin glue-on clinical outcomes. Review of the literature and our own 1990 study indicate a mortality rate of 5% to 20% for enterocutaneous fistula, and a healing rate of 75% to 85% after definitive surgery.
METHODS: We reviewed all cases of gastrointestinal-cutaneous fistula from 1997 to 2005 at 2 large teaching hospitals. We identified 106 patients with enterocutaneous

PURPOSE: Evaluate the effectiveness of fibrin glue for the embolic occlusion of needle tracks following percutaneous lung biopsy (PLB).
METHODS: Twenty-six rabbits underwent computed tomography (CT)-guided PLB using a coaxial system consisting of 19- and 22-gauge needles. Thirteen rabbits were used as controls (group A). In 13 other rabbits (group B), fibrin glue labelled with I131 fibrinogen and contrast medium was injected into the track. Both groups were examined by CT for the presence and severity of pneumothorax (mild: less than 20%; severe: more than 20%). Group B was also examined scin

Fibrinogen glue of human origin was used in 44 patients. Indications are of two types: as a glue mainly for dermoepidermoid grafts but also to assist mucosal suturing and bone obturation, and for hemostasis after extractions in patients with coagulation disorders (hemophilia, cirrhosis, leukemia). Positive results were obtained, particularly in hemophilic patients, the incidence and severity of secondary hemorrhage appearing to diminish.

Our aim was to evaluate whether a fibrin glue and octyl-cyanoacrylate can promote fixation of meniscal allograft in rabbits. The medial menisci of 18 rabbits were frozen and stored at -73 degrees C (30 days) and then was allotransplantation and fixed by: GSu (n=6) soft tissue; GFi (n=6) fibrin glue; GCy (n=6) cyanoacrylate. They were evaluated by daily surgery recovery score (4 weeks), gross inspection and cells density on scaffold. A severe inflammatory response with caseous necrosis from the inside of the joint on through the approach incision led us to an early sacrifice (16th day) of all a

OBJECTIVE: Pterygium surgery requires the removal of pterygium tissue and repair of the conjunctiva with either sutures or fibrin glue. The literature suggests that the cost of fibrin glue could be compensated by reducing procedure time and be more cost-effective. However, to our knowledge, no formal studies have examined this hypothesis.
METHOD: Retrospective chart review of patients who received pterygium surgery with only sutures between January 2008 and January 2010, and those whose surgeons used fibrin glue with or without sutures, between April 2017 and November 2018. Equipment cost, op

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula is one of the most frequent and potentially life-threatening complications following pancreatic resections. Fibrin sealants have been used in some centers to reduce postoperative pancreatic fistula. However, the use of fibrin sealants during pancreatic surgery is controversial. This is an update of a Cochrane Review last published in 2018.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety, effectiveness, and potential adverse effects of fibrin sealants for the prevention of postoperative pancreatic fistula following pancreatic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage occurs in 4% to 32% of cranial surgeries and is associated with significant patient burden and expense. The use of sealant as an adjunct to primary dural closure is assumed to help prevent CSF leakage.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the utility of different sealants for dural closure using an in Vitro model.
METHODS: We evaluated 9 commonly used dural sealants, including Tachosil (Takeda Inc, Osaka, Japan), Adherus (Hyperbranch Inc, Durham, North Carolina), Duraform (Codman, Raynham, Massachusetts), Tissudura (Baxter, Deerfield, Illinois), Hemopatch (Baxt

BACKGROUND: Surgery for anorectal fistula may result in recurrence, or impairment of continence. The ideal treatment for anorectal fistulae should be associated with low recurrence rates, minimal incontinence and good quality of life.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and morbidity of operative procedures for chronic anal fistula, primary outcomes being recurrence and incontinence.

Acquired tracheal pouch known also as tracheocele is a rare air-filled diverticulum of tracheal pars membranacea. This disease may be due to esophageal or tracheal surgery, orotracheal intubation, or increased intralunimal pressure through a weak area of tracheal wall. When symptomatic and medical therapy is insufficient, this disorder must be treated surgically. Several surgical methods ranging from open neck or thoracic surgery to endoscopic managements have been reported. We report the case history of a 7-year-old boy affected by recurrent pneumonia due to tracheal pouch. The patient underw

Although fistulae resulting from superficial parotidectomy represent a serious problem, there is still little consensus on the optimal treatment. Some suggest management by applying dressings, while others advise surgery. In recent years several other strategies have been proposed. In this manuscript, we present two cases of postparotidectomy fistulae treated by injection with fibrin tissue glue (Tissucol Duo 500, Baxter AG, Vienna, Austria). Furthermore, a review of the literature is presented. In both patients the fistulae completely healed within months without complications. A literature s
