A Comparative Evaluation of Frictional Resistance of Various Lingual Brackets With Nitinol (NiTi) Archwires of Different Dimensions: An In Vitro Study.

Introduction Orthodontic mechanics involves transferring some of the applied force to the tooth's supporting components via friction, which in turn allows the tooth to move more easily. Aim The purpose of this in vitro experiment was to examine the frictional resistance (FR) of different lingual brackets utilizing Instron universal testing machines and nitinol (NiTi) archwires of varying sizes. Materials and methods Twenty-four sectional anterior die stones were replicated from a study model. They were categorized into eight categories, with the Libral lingual bracket and the JJ lingual bracke

Comparative Evaluation of Frictional Resistance Between Different Types of Ceramic Brackets and Stainless Steel Brackets With Teflon-Coated Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel Archwires: An In-Vitro Study.

Background Orthodontic tooth movement relies on sliding mechanics usually achieved by sliding the archwire through brackets. Sliding causes friction which is a force resisting the relative motion of two contacting objects. Frictional resistance is undesirable in orthodontic tooth movement because the archwire might bind with the bracket and prevent tooth movement. In addition, friction causes bending of the archwire leading to unwanted tooth movement or space loss through anchorage interference, prolonging the treatment time and root resorption. This study was performed to compare the friction

A comparative evaluation of frictional resistance and surface roughness of silver coated and uncoated stainless-steel bracket wire assembly- An in-vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Silver ions act as potent antimicrobial agents. Silver coating of brackets and the archwires can help reduce the formation of white spot lesions and caries which is commonly seen with fixed orthodontic treatment. However, this may affect the friction and surface roughness of the bracket-wire assembly which in turn affects the biological tooth movement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 60 samples were included in the study which was divided into four groups. Group-1: • 15 silver coated 0.022 x 0.028" slot MBT prescription maxillary central incisor brackets • 15 silver coated 0.019

Slot fidelity and ligation-dependent tribology in personalized brackets made by casting versus selective laser melting: an in vitro study.

Reliable chairside adoption of digital orthodontics depends on micrometre-scale slot fidelity and stable bracket-wire tribology. A single computer-aided design for a personalized second-premolar bracket was manufactured by lost-wax casting and by selective laser melting (SLM) (n = 36 per method). Slot height and inter-wall angle were measured on both the support-facing and non-support surfaces. Static and dynamic friction were evaluated using stainless-steel rectangular wires ligated either with tightly twisted stainless-steel ties or with elastomeric modules. Mean slot height was 480.88 ± 73.

Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine-Induced Minocycline Release and Fluorapatite Coating for the Design of Novel Orthodontic Appliances with Both Antibacterial and Remineralization Abilities.

Many types of antibacterial coating have been applied to fixed orthodontic devices to prevent bacterial attachment and subsequent dental caries. However, challenges such as weak adhesion, lack of remineralization ability, cytotoxicity, and a short duration of effectiveness remain unresolved. Therefore, there is a critical need for coatings that offer strong surface adherence, long-lasting antibacterial properties, and remineralization potential. In this study, we achieved controlled release of the antimicrobial agent minocycline through a polydopamine coating chemically grafted onto the surfac

Ligatureless Low Friction Self-Ligating Bracket: A Finite Element Study.

This study used the finite element method to evaluate a new orthodontic bracket design aiming to reduce friction during tooth movement, thereby minimizing tissue damage. The analysis focused on sliding resistance, retention capacity, and activation using stainless steel brackets (slot: 0.022"x0.027") and various archwire types: square (0.022"x0.022"), rectangular (0.021"x0.025"), and round (0.020"). Simulations were performed under dry (µ=0.5) and lubricated (µ=0.3) conditions, totaling 40 models. Loads were applied to the arches, and von Mises stresses and forces were computed. The passive se

Esthetic outcomes in orthodontics through digital customization with a lingual appliance system.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary fixed orthodontic appliances are shifting from non-customized pre-adjusted appliances to custom-designed and printed appliances with novel digital setup systems. We are one step closer to precision dentistry and orthodontics using personalized mechanics and custom appliances. However, despite the evidential enhancement and other improvements to fixed appliances, tooth movement is still limited to five degrees of freedom. Opening or closing spaces still requires manually placing elastomeric chains or coil springs. AIM: In this article, we aimed to demonstrate how advan

A Novel Technique for Shortening Orthodontic Treatment: The "JET System".

We have developed a novel technique, the Jiyugaoka Enjoyable Treatment (JET) system, to complete orthodontic treatment in a short time. It entails the use of the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP), light continuous forces and low friction in cases involving extraction. In the JET system, tooth extraction not only creates space, but also triggers the RAP; thus tooth extraction accelerates orthodontic treatment. We describe for the first time how to use the JET system to shorten treatment time in a patient in whom four premolars were extracted. A 15 year old girl patient exhibited an Angle C

Trifocal distraction-compression osteosynthesis in conjunction with passive self-ligating brackets for the reconstruction of a large bony defect and multiple missing teeth.

Reconstruction of a maxillary dentoalveolar defect and closure of a wide oronasal fistula in a patient with a traumatic injury are challenging for both orthodontists and surgeons. A conventional bone graft is used to fill the alveolar bone defect, to restore continuity between bony segments, and to provide bony support for tooth eruption adjacent to the defect or for orthodontic tooth movement into the bony defect. However, if the defect is too large to allow for a conventional bone graft, transport distraction osteogenesis can be used for reconstruction of the alveolar bone and implant placem

Experimental tooth movement under light orthodontic forces: rates of tooth movement and changes of the periodontium.

AIM: To investigate light forces for experimental tooth movement. METHOD: Light orthodontic forces of 1.2, 3.6, 6.5, and 10 g force (gf) were applied for 14 days to move rat molars, and the effects of the forces on the rate of tooth movement and changes of the periodontium were examined. RESULTS: In the early period, despite the different levels of force used in each group, there were no significant differences in tooth displacement. From hour 56 to day 14, the tooth displacement in the 1.2 gf group was significantly smaller than that in the other groups and the rate was nearly constant. The

Attractive magnets for orthodontic extrusion of crown-root fractured teeth.

A subgingival crown-root fracture presents the clinician with a difficult restorative problem, including reaching the fracture line, and is complicated by the need to maintain the periodontal tissues in good health. The treatment options up to now have usually been limited to extrusion of the remaining root with a conventional orthodontic appliance, surgical intraalveolar transplantation of the root or extraction with bridge replacement. In this report, a new method of orthodontic extrusion with attractive magnets is presented. One or two neodymium-iron-boron magnets were attached to the remai

Prospective clinical study of transverse development with orthodontics with self-ligating brackets.

Orthodontics with low friction, low force, passive self-ligating brackets produces alveolar-dental remodeling, resulting in an increase in the transverse diameter of the dental arches, especially in the premolar sector. The aim of this study was to compare the modifications of the transverse diameter in the pre- and post-dental alignment cast models with orthodontics with passive self-ligating brackets in patients with moderate to severe dental discrepancy. The study included 28 patients of both sexes aged 16 to 48 years with dental discrepancies between -6 and -16 mm, treated with self-ligati

Characterizing constraining forces in the alignment phase of orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the frictional forces (FF) that constrain wire sliding in the initial alignment phase of treatment using a new term, the "constraining force" (CF), and to hypothesize that CF is dependent on two factors: the hyperelastic behavior of archwires and the specific type of tooth geometric malalignment present. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A laboratory device that simulates the four distinct malalignment types (in-out, rotation, tipping, and vertical step) was used to couple with an Instron testing apparatus. Incremental CF data for the four types of malalignment were recorded. Eac
