INTRODUCTION: Pectus deformities are the most frequently seen congenital thoracic wall anomalies. The cause of these conditions is thought to be abnormal elongation of the rib cartilages. We here report our clinical experience and the results of a sternochondroplasty procedure based on the subperichondrial resection of the elongated cartilages.
HYPOTHESIS: This technique is a valuable surgical strategy to treat the wide variety of pectus deformities.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During the period from October 2001 through September 2009, 205 adult patients (171 men and 34 women) underwent pectus ex

Depending on the severity of the condition and associated risk, surgical intervention may not always be the first choice. This is true for treating chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. For both conditions, novel non-surgical treatments have been developed to gradually alleviate the malformation making use of the elastic nature of the costal cartilages at an early age of the patient. To quantify the performance of such treatments, this paper introduces and discusses the development of a software-based instrument that utilizes 3D chest optical images (surface sca

Background The literature is silent on the relationship between symptoms and the Haller index. Nor is there a classification of the severity of the physical complaints. Materials and Methods Retrospectively, data from 128 patients (102 funnel, 25 pigeon chest patients, and 1 mixed type) were evaluated. To objectify the symptoms, we developed a score to describe the level of physical ailments. This score includes 10 different symptoms as well as the situation or frequency in which they occur and an impact factor. This depends on how much they affect everyday life. Results Pectus excavatum patie

The authors summarize a 32-year experience in the study and in the non-operative approach of pectus carinatum and pectus excavatum. Data of 4,012 patients with pectus deformities were collected from 1977 to January 2009, allowing evaluation on the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of these deformities. Growth disturbances of anterior chest wall bones and cartilages were detected in imaging studies. Heredity, and biomechanical factors, like respiratory disturbances and scoliosis were noticed in more than 40% of the patients. The method of dynamic remodeling of the thorax - compressive orthos

For decades, open surgical repair was the only available method to treat congenital and acquired chest wall deformities (CWDs). In 1998, D. Nuss described a minimally invasive procedure for surgical repair of pectus excavatum (PE), and a few years later H. Abramson reported on his experience with the "reversed Nuss technique" for surgical repair of pectus carinatum (PC). Both procedures are performed with increasing frequency worldwide. However, nonsurgical measures such as vacuum bell (VB) therapy for conservative treatment of PE and more differentiated bracing systems for conservative treatme

BACKGROUND: Chest wall deformities, though relatively uncommon in childhood and adolescence, significantly affect aesthetic perception and can impact cardiac and respiratory function. This study aims to compare individuals with pectus deformities to a healthy control group, shedding light on the condition's etiology and prognosis.
METHOD: Conducted as a case-control study between 2020 and 2022, the research included a case group of 71 patients with pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum who were followed up at the Pediatric Cardiology outpatient clinic. The control group consisted of 80 childre

ObjectivePectus excavatum and, less commonly, pectus carinatum are congenital chest wall deformities. These may be associated with kyphoscoliosis, pulmonary, and cardiac diseases. However, the incidence of concomitant cardiac disease in patients with pectus deformities is not well-documented. There is no consensus on the optimal age for repair, the most effective technique, or whether a simultaneous or staged approach is preferable. This study presents our experience with combined pectus and cardiac surgery.MethodsThirteen patients (aged 6-32 years) with pectus deformities and concurrent cardi

A single case of trichorhinophalangeal syndrome, type I, is reported. The patient manifested the complete triad of the syndrome: thin, sparse, slow-growing scalp hairs; a pear-shaped nose; and cone-shaped epiphysis in some interphalangeal articulations of both hands. In addition, tooth decay, pectus carinatum, lumbar scoliosis, and polycystic ovary were observed. This multisystemic disorder is apparently rare, but its prevalence is probably underestimated in the dermatologic literature.

Pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum represent the most frequent chest wall deformations. However, the pathogenesis is still poorly understood and research results remain inconsistent. To focus on the recent state of knowledge, we summarize and critically discuss the pathological concepts based on the history of these entities, beginning with the first description in the sixteenth century. Based on the early clinical descriptions, we review and discuss the different pathogenetic hypotheses. To open new perspectives for the potential pathomechanisms, the embryonic and foetal development of the

Costal cartilage irregularities are a major component of most congenital thoracic-wall deformities. A significant number of patients with these cartilage irregularities may either refuse major reconstruction or in fact have disorders of insufficient magnitude to justify such endeavors. In patients undergoing augmentation mammaplasty, recontouring or sculpturing of these abnormal costal cartilages may correct or improve the underlying chest-wall deformity and thus enhance the final aesthetic result. This method has had application in mild to moderate asymmetrical cases of both pectus excavatum

Marfan's syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation of the gene FBN1, coding for the protein fibrillin-1. Cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and ophthalmic manifestations are the most commonly observed, but minor diagnostic criteria also include pulmonary manifestations. Pneumothorax, frequently relapsing, affects 5 to 11% of patients. Rib cage abnormalities (pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum) and apical blebs may contribute to their occurrence. Treatment does not require any specific procedure but there is an increased risk of recurrence. Pectus excavatum affects up to 60% of th

Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular manifestations in pediatric Marfan syndrome (MFS) exhibit substantial heterogeneity. Early identification of patients at elevated risk of requiring cardiac surgery is essential to optimizing outcomes. This study aimed to determine phenotypic features associated with cardiovascular surgery in genetically confirmed pediatric MFS. Methods: Among the 1006 children evaluated, 214 with genetically verified MFS were included in the analysis. We categorized patients by the presence or absence of cardiac surgery during childhood. Systemic and cardiovascular feature

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare pediatric genetic syndrome with incidence of one per eight million live births. The disorder is characterised by premature aging, generally leading to death at approximately 13.4 years of age. This is a follow-up study of a 9-year-old male with clinical and radiographic features highly suggestive of HGPS and presented here with description of differential diagnosis and dental consideration. This is the first case report of HGPS which showed pectus carinatum structure of chest.

The Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (SJS) is an autosomal recessive disorder of myotonia, short stature, "mask-like" face, blepharophimosis, stiff joints, spinal malalignment, and pectus carinatum. The authors report on a 10-year-old girl with expressionless face, blepharophimosis, mild thoracic asymmetry, and myotonic electromyographic pattern, but without osteoarticular, spinal, and statural involvement. This appears to be one of the mildest form of SJS described so far. Contiguous genes could be an explanation for this and other atypical cases of SJS.

Kozlowski syndrome is the most common type of spondylometaphyseal dysplasia (SMD). It is characterized by short stature (130 to 150 cm), pectus carinatum, limited elbow and hip movement, mild bowleg deformity, and curvature of the spinal column. Children with Kozlowski dwarfism usually are not recognized at birth, since they have normal clinical features, weight, and size. This article reports the dental treatment and oral findings of a 14-year-old female patient with Kozlowski dwarfism.

There is a large and diverse group of congenital abnormalities of the thorax that manifest as deformities and/or defects of the anterior chest wall and, depending on the severity and concomitant anomalies, may have cardiopulmonary implications. Pectus excavatum, the most common anterior chest deformity, is characterized by sternal depression with corresponding leftward displacement and rotation of the heart. Pectus carinatum, the second most common, exhibits a variety of chest wall protrusions and very diverse clinical manifestations. The cause of these conditions is thought to be abnormal elo

OBJECTIVES: Several procedures have been described to correct pectus excavatum and carinatum. We have used a modified Ravitch procedure (STRATOS titanium bars) for patients who were unsuitable for the minimally invasive Nuss procedure. The operation produced excellent cosmetic results, but we have noted several fractures and displacements of the STRATOS bars.
METHODS: We reviewed all our STRATOS patients since first use in 2009 until 2014. We collated the following data of each patient: diagnosis, severity of pectus deformity, comorbidity, previous operations for pectus, age at bar implantati

PURPOSE: The incidence of Marfan syndrome in the general population is 0.3%. Two-thirds of patients with Marfan syndrome have concurrent pectus deformity. However, incidence of Marfan syndrome and cardiac abnormalities in patients presenting with an isolated pectus deformity remains unknown. We sought to establish the degree of association between pectus deformities and these abnormalities, and whether referral of these patients for cardiac and genetic workup is warranted.
METHODS: Our pediatric surgery group refers patients with pectus deformities for genetic and cardiac evaluation. We exami
