The safety of asthma treatment and management strategies in pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Poor asthma control in pregnancy is associated with worse maternal and fetal outcomes. Despite this, many patients and providers opt not to continue treatment in pregnancy, largely due to fear of teratogenicity. The goal of this review is to inform providers about the safety of asthma medication in pregnancy as well as strategies for encouraging patients to adhere to these medications. AREAS COVERED: To prepare this narrative review article, we performed a database search using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to obtain a broad range of clinic

Trends in dermatology eponyms.

BACKGROUND: Eponyms are ubiquitous in dermatology; however, their usage trends have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the usage of eponyms in dermatology from 1880 to 2020. METHODS: Candidate eponyms were collected from a textbook and an online resource. A subset of these eponyms was deemed to be dermatology-focused by a panel of experienced dermatologists. Python scripts were used to permute eponyms into multiple variations and automatically search PubMed using BioPython's Entrez library. RESULTS: The dermatologist panel designated 373 of 529 candidate eponyms as dermatology-foc

Paper test cards for presumptive testing of very low quality antimalarial medications.

Carrying out chemical analysis of antimalarials to detect low-quality medications before they reach a patient is a costly venture. Here, we show that a library of chemical color tests embedded on a paper card can presumptively identify formulations corresponding to very low quality antimalarial drugs. The presence or absence of chloroquine (CQ), doxycycline (DOX), quinine, sulfadoxine, pyrimethamine, and primaquine antimalarial medications, in addition to fillers used in low-quality pharmaceuticals, are indicated by patterns of colors that are generated on the test cards. Test card sensitivity

Trigger Point Injections Versus Medical Management for Acute Myofascial Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Myofascial pain is a common problem resulting in musculoskeletal pain characterized by myofascial trigger points. These trigger points can cause substantial discomfort and functional limitations. This meta-analysis aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of trigger point injections versus medical management alone in treating acute onset myofascial pain. A thorough search was conducted across four databases, namely, PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science (WOS), and Cochrane Library, to identify randomized controlled trials that compared the effectiveness of trigger point injections versus medical m

[Complications and side effects of conservative treatment of rhinological diseases].

BACKGROUND: The spectrum of rhinological diseases is wide, as is that of their drug-based treatment. Only 1272 compounds coded R01 (nasal preparations) are listed in the ATC group (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification). Conservative therapy of rhinological diseases additionally includes systemic (often oral) application of corticosteroids, antibiotics and immunomodulators. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to outline possible complications of medication (subdivided into classes of ingredients) commonly used to treat rhinological diseases in hospitals. Useful therapeutic and preven

Vitamin C supplementation in nicotine use during pregnancy: A narrative review.

Nicotine use during pregnancy remains a widespread problem in obstetrics, leading to complications such as intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth, stillbirth, and sudden infant death syndrome. Consistent education by medical personnel is essential, as no medication or supplement has been found to prevent the dangers of nicotine use during pregnancy. If a pregnant woman is unable to quit nicotine despite intensive efforts, vitamin C, with its antioxidant properties, may help mitigate these risks, as suggested by some studies. This review summarizes current knowledge based on publication

Systematic review: effect of alcohol intake on adherence to outpatient medication regimens for chronic diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Nonadherence to medications can lead to adverse health outcomes. Alcohol consumption has been shown to be associated with nonadherence to antiretroviral medications, but this relationship has not been examined at different drinking levels or with other chronic disease medications. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the association of alcohol consumption with nonadherence to medications for four chronic diseases. METHOD: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for relevant studies published through 2009. To be included in this analysis, studies had to

Next-generation sequencing-based detection of Ureaplasma in the gastric fluid of neonates with respiratory distress and chorioamnionitis.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress is common in neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units. Additionally, infectious diseases such as intrauterine infections or vertical transmission are important underlying causes of respiratory failure. However, pathogens often cannot be identified in neonates, and there are many cases in which antibacterial drugs are empirically administered. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is advantageous in that it can detect trace amounts of bacteria that cannot be detected by culturing or bacteria that are difficult to cultivate. However, there are few reports on

Sarcopenia is associated with a greater risk of polypharmacy and number of medications: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Polypharmacy in older adults is associated with multiple negative consequences that may affect muscular function, independently from the presence of medical conditions. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the association of sarcopenia with polypharmacy and higher number of medications. A systematic literature search of observational studies using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases was conducted from inception until June 2022. To determine if sarcopenia is associated with a higher risk of polypharmacy and increased number of medicati

Medication adherence among allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Patients receiving a haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) are subjected to complex oral medications based on prophylactic and immunosuppressive treatments. Adherence to medication plays a role in survival, and medication non-adherence (MNA) is closely associated with graft-versus-host disease and other complications. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the available evidence regarding prevalence rates of medication adherence, the risk factors of MNA, the effectiveness of interventions to increase medication adherence and the outcomes associated with MNA. Antihypertensive medications are associated with the risk of kidney and bladder cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Several studies have indicated that the use of antihypertensive medications may influence the incidence of bladder/kidney cancer, with some scholars refuting any such association. Hence, a systematic review is needed to verify this linkage. we comprehensively searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for original studies reporting a relationship between antihypertensive medications and risk of bladder/kidney cancer. We included 31 articles comprising 3,352,264 participants. We found a significant association between the risk of kidney cancer and any antihypertensive med

Impact of mHealth on Medication Adherence in Older Adults with Chronic Diseases Facing Treatment Burden: A Systematic Review.

Background: In older adults, multimorbidity and polypharmacy complicate medication regimens and often lead to poor adherence. Mobile health (mHealth) has been suggested as a solution to enhance medication adherence in chronic conditions. Despite the increase in smartphone usage among people aged 65 and over, there is still a lack of evidence of mHealth in this age group. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of mHealth interventions on medication adherence in older adults (≥65 years) with chronic diseases, compared with standard care or other interventions. Methods: The review was conducted in ac
