Discrimination of brain abscess and cystic tumor by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy was evaluated for the differentiation of brain abscesses and cystic brain tumors. Proton MR spectroscopy was performed in vivo in two patients with brain abscess and eight patients with various cystic brain tumors (anaplastic astrocytoma, glioblastoma, and metastatic brain tumor). MR imaging with contrast medium demonstrated ring-like enhanced mass lesions in all patients. The various resonance peaks in proton MR spectra were assigned to metabolites according to chemical shifts. Treatment of the cystic brain lesions was based on the information from

The role of magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy in transplantation: from animal models to man.

Critical success factors in solid organ and vascular transplantation are the assessment of graft status/viability as well as stringent monitoring of transplant recipients, preferentially using noninvasive techniques. This review addresses the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) in the field of transplantation. The first section is devoted to the description of the main MR techniques used for monitoring the status of the graft noninvasively. Subsequently, the role of MRI/MRS in the analysis of the viability of organs for transplantation is discussed. Since chr

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) for the evaluation of treatment of brain tumours.

We investigated metabolic changes in brain tumours following treatment, using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In meningiomas, effective therapeutic embolisation led to an acute increase in lactate. In radiosensitive tumours such as malignant lymphoma, a decrease in lactate and in increase in N-acetyl-aspartate occurred after radiotherapy, which preceded changes observed on magnetic resonance imaging. On the other hand, no significant changes in spectral patterns were observed in malignant gliomas resistant to therapy. Tissue characterisation of brain tumours by spectral patterns on pro…

In vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy of brain and muscle in a type of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy (MERRF).

Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows noninvasive measurement of the intracellular phosphate-containing metabolites and intracellular pH in localized volumes of human muscle and brain in vivo. This technique was used to study 8 patients with a mitochondrial cytopathy (myoclonus epilepsy with ragged red fibers). Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy of resting gastrocnemius muscle demonstrated significantly increased relative intracellular inorganic phosphate concentrations (p less than 0.0005) and decreased phosphocreatine to inorganic phosphate concentration ratios (p less th…

Determination of the three-dimensional structure of margatoxin by 1H, 13C, 15N triple-resonance nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The solution structure of the 39-residue peptide margatoxin, a scorpion toxin that selectively blocks the voltage-gated potassium-channel Kv1.3, has been determined by NMR spectroscopy. The toxin was isotopically labeled with 13C and 15N and studied using two-dimensional homonuclear and three- and four-dimensional heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy. The final structure was determined using 501 constraints, comprising 422 NOE constraints, 60 dihedral angle constraints, 9 disulfide constraints, and 10 hydrogen bond constraints. Structures were initially determined with the program PEGASUS and subseq

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of 2-Hydroxyglutarate and Glycine in Adult Subjects With Brainstem Gliomas.

Surgical biopsy of brainstem tumors carries a risk of neurological injury. We performed magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG) and glycine in patients with brainstem tumors to assess the feasibility of detecting and quantifying 2HG in the brainstem to obviate the need for a diagnostic biopsy and to establish the clinical significance of glycine MRS in brainstem tumors in vivo. Twenty adult patients with radiographically identified presumed brainstem gliomas were prospectively enrolled in the study. Proton MRS was obtained at 3T with a protocol tailored for detection …

Association between Bioimpedance Spectroscopy and Magnetic Resonance Lymphangiography in the Diagnosis and Assessment of Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses associations between bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) and magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL) in the staging and assessment of lymphedema. METHODS: Adults who received MRL and BIS between 2020 and 2022 were included. We collected fluid, fat, and lymphedema severity ratings, and measured fluid stripe thickness, subcutaneous fat width, and lymphatic diameter on MRL. BIS lymphedema index (L-Dex) scores were collected from patient charts. We assessed sensitivity and specificity of L-Dex scores to detect MRL-identified lymphedema, and examined associations betw

Usefulness of Preoperative Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Improve the Safety of a Living Liver Donor.

OBJECTIVES: The steatosis of graft liver is an important factor in liver transplant that determines the graft function in the recipient and the recovery of the remnant liver in the living donor. We analyzed the data of living donors from our center to evaluate whether magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy can replace liver biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From May 2010 to May 2019, data from a total of 239 living donors was collected. There were 84 patients who had no magnetic resonance imaging or magnetic resonance spectroscopy data, and they were excluded. The result …

Repeatability and reliability of GABA measurements with magnetic resonance spectroscopy in healthy young adults.

PURPOSE: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) abnormalities have been implicated in a range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Despite substantial interest in probing GABA in vivo, human imaging studies relying on magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) have generally been hindered by technical challenges, including GABA's relatively low concentration and spectral overlap with other metabolites. Although past studies have shown moderate-to-strong test-retest repeatability and reliability of GABA within certain brain regions, many of these studies have been limited by small sample sizes. METHODS: GABA+ (m…

Proton and phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the healthy human breast at 7 T.

In vivo water- and fat-suppressed 1 H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and 31 P magnetic resonance adiabatic multi-echo spectroscopic imaging were performed at 7 T in duplicate in healthy fibroglandular breast tissue of a group of eight volunteers. The transverse relaxation times of 31 P metabolites were determined, and the reproducibility of 1 H and 31 P MRS was investigated. The transverse relaxation times for phosphoethanolamine (PE) and phosphocholine (PC) were fitted bi-exponentially, with an added short T2 component of 20 ms for adenosine monophosphate, resulting in values of 199 ± …

Metabolomics with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in a Drosophila melanogaster Model of Surviving Sepsis.

Patients surviving sepsis demonstrate sustained inflammation, which has been associated with long-term complications. One of the main mechanisms behind sustained inflammation is a metabolic switch in parenchymal and immune cells, thus understanding metabolic alterations after sepsis may provide important insights to the pathophysiology of sepsis recovery. In this study, we explored metabolomics in a novel Drosophila melanogaster model of surviving sepsis using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), to determine metabolite profiles. We used a model of percutaneous infection in Drosophila melanogaste

Comparison of the repeatability of GABA-edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy with and without macromolecule suppression.

PURPOSE: The inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) can be measured in vivo using edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), but quantification suffers from contamination by macromolecules (MM). It is possible to suppress this contamination using symmetric editing, but this procedure potentially compromises reliability of the GABA measurement. The aim of this study was to compare the repeatability of GABA-edited MRS with and without MM suppression. METHODS: GABA' (non-MM contaminated) and GABA'+MM (MM-contaminated) concentration was measured in the occipital lobe (OCC) and …

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the evaluation of infiltration zone of cerebral alveolar echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral alveolar echinococcosis (CAE) grows infiltratively like a malignant tumor, causing great harm to the human body. It is possible to display mass lesions of CAE using various imaging systems, but regarding the infiltrating proliferation active regions, it is difficult to evaluate its actual range using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI). This research focused on proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)HMRS) techniques to find the mass and infiltration zone of CAE. We explored the marginal zone (MZ) of CAE nearly close to the actual infiltrating scope, to provi…

The magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings of extrapontine myelinolysis in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy findings of extrapontine myelinolysis have been rarely reported. Herein, we present MR spectroscopy findings as well as the conventional MR and diffusion MR findings of an acute lymphoblastic leukemia patient with extrapontine myelinolysis. Advanced MR imaging including diffusion-weighted imaging and MR spectroscopy may be helpful to exclude other pathologies in the differential diagnosis and make the diagnosis when there is a diagnostic difficulty on cases clinically suspicious for extrapontine myelinolysis.

Utility of in vitro proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in aetiological characterisation of brain abscesses.

PURPOSE: Brain abscesses often present an aetiological dilemma. Microscopy is insensitive and culture techniques are time consuming. Hence, a new rapid technique in vitro Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HMRS) was evaluated for its usefulness in the identification of aetiology of brain abscesses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 39 pus specimens from brain abscesses were subjected to in vitro 1HMRS. These pus specimens were also processed by conventional culture methods. The spectral patterns generated by in vitro 1HMRS were further correlated with culture results. RESULTS: Pus spec…

Brain proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and neuromuscular pathology in a patient with GM1 gangliosidosis.

The authors report the clinical, neuroradiologic, and neuromuscular pathological findings in a patient with GM1 gangliosidosis. The proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, previously reported in a single patient with GM1 gangliosidosis, detected a mild reduction of N-acetylaspartate, consistent with relative paucity of axons and neurons and increased levels of myoinositol suggestive of gliotic white matter changes along with the accumulation of an additional compound that could represent either guanidinoacetate or Gal beta 1-6Gal beta 1-4)GlcNAc, an oligosaccharide previously isolated from the…
