[Subependymoma of the lateral ventricle. A case report].

INTRODUCTION. Intracranial subependymomas are rare, slow-growing, noninvasive, benign tumors. They are most often located in the fourth ventricle. Most of these tumors are discovered incidentally during autopsy. Routine medical checkups using neuroimaging techniques have increased their diagnosis. Subependymomas may present with symptoms related to cerebrospinal fluid obstruction or mass effect. CASE REPORT. A 52-year-old man presented with severe headache and mental deterioration with memory disturbances and bradypsychia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass in t

Management strategies and clinical outcomes for thalamic neuroepithelial cysts: 10-year single center experience.

BACKGROUND: Thalamic neuroepithelial cysts are rare benign lesions that occasionally cause neurological morbidity through parenchymal compression or obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid. Due to their rarity, their natural history and optimal surgical management strategies are unclear. We present the largest single-center experience with thalamic neuroepithelial cysts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients with thalamic cysts at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (2014-2025). We identified cases through systematic review of CT and MRI imaging reports. We analyzed p

Gliomatosis cerebri and Rasmussen's encephalitis: Two different entities causing refractory epilepsy. Comparison through two clinical cases.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Rasmussen's Encephalitis (RE) is a chronic and progressive childhood disease caused by an inflammatory disorder that affects a cerebral hemisphere. On the other hand, Gliomatosis Cerebri (GC) is a rare primary neoplastic glial process with a diffuse and infiltrative growth. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present two clinical cases with a history of continuous focal epilepsy refractory to antiepileptic drugs. They share similar clinical and radiologic features, but a different histopathological diagnosis. A brain biopsy was needed to distinguish GC from a RE. CONCLUSION:

Epilepsia partialis continua associated with widespread gliomatosis cerebri.

We report an uncommon association of intractable epilepsia partialis continua that was the main presentation of widespread gliomatosis cerebri in two females. Both children had a preceding prolonged secondary generalized seizure 2-4 months before the evolution of epilepsia partialis continua, including recurrent clusters of left-sided myoclonic twitching and sensory impairment. During these events, the children remained fully alert. These seizures were corroborated by prolonged focal epileptic spike/wave discharges evident on the electroencephalograms. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging in th

Surgical management of temporal lobe tumor-related epilepsy in children.

OBJECT: Slow-growing, low-grade temporal lobe tumors are one of the most common causes of epilepsy in children. Although there are numerous consistent features in this patient group, consensus about the management and surgical approach is lacking. In this study the authors review the clinical, pathological, and radiological features as well as outcome data obtained in 29 pediatric patients with temporal lobe tumor-related epilepsy and discuss the surgical treatment strategies. METHODS: In patients who presented with intractable seizures secondary to mass lesions and underwent comprehensive ep

Polymorphous Low-Grade Neuroepithelial Tumor of the Young (PLNTY): Molecular Profiling Confirms Frequent MAPK Pathway Activation.

Polymorphous low-grade neuroepithelial tumor of the young (PLNTY) is a recently described epileptogenic tumor characterized by oligodendroglioma-like components, aberrant CD34 expression, and frequent mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway activation. We molecularly profiled 13 cases with diagnostic histopathological features of PLNTY (10 female; median age, 16 years; range, 5-52). Patients frequently presented with seizures (9 of 12 with available history) and temporal lobe tumors (9 of 13). MAPK pathway activating alterations were identified in all 13 cases. Fusions were present in

Successful therapy in a child with a congenital peripheral medulloepithelioma and disruption of hindquarter development.

PURPOSE: Medulloepithelioma is an embryonal multipotential neuroepithelial tumor with a striking potential for divergent differentiation. It is usually intraocular or intracerebral and associated with a good prognosis only if completely surgically excised. Data regarding therapy in children with incompletely resected tumors are limited. PATIENT AND METHODS: A girl was born with a large, peripheral, congenital medulloepithelioma associated with complete absence of the left hindquarter and anus. Plain film, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated complete absence of the lef

Dysembryoplastic Neuroepithelial Tumor of the Septum Pellucidum and the Supratentorial Midline: Histopathologic, Neuroradiologic, and Molecular Features of 7 Cases.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) are one of the most common epilepsy-associated low-grade glioneuronal tumors of the central nervous system. Although most DNTs occur in the cerebral cortex, DNT-like tumors with unusual intraventricular or periventricular localizations have been reported. Most of them involve the septum pellucidum and the foramen of Monro. In this study, we have described the neuroradiologic, histopathologic, and molecular features of 7 cases (4 female and 3 male; patient age range, 3 to 34 y; mean age, 16.7 y). The tumors, all localized near the supratentorial mi

Posterior fossa decompression for life-threatening tonsillar herniation in patients with gliomatosis cerebri: report of three cases.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) is a rare type of primary brain tumor that diffusely infiltrates more than two lobes of the brain while the normal cerebral architecture is maintained. To the best of our knowledge, the association between an acquired tonsillar herniation and GC has never been reported. In this article, we describe three patients with progressive gliomatosis of the cerebellar hemispheres who subsequently showed signs and symptoms secondary to tonsillar herniation. Early recognition of this potentially life-threatening complication allowed us to recommend promp

Evidence for involvement of steroid receptors and coactivators in neuroepithelial and meningothelial tumors.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Steroid receptors such as androgen receptor (AR) and estrogen receptors (ER) ER-α and ER-β, and their receptor coactivators (steroid receptor coactivator, SRC) are widely localized in the brain. Although previous studies have investigated the expression of steroid receptors in brain tumors like astrocytoma, the studies on the expression of steroid receptors and SRCs in other brain tumors are lacking. Here, we investigated the expression of AR, ERs, and SRCs in neuroepithelial (medulloblastoma, ependymoma, oligodendroglioma) and meningothelial meningioma using tissue microarray immunohistochemi

Primary brain tumour epidemiology in Georgia: first-year results of a population-based study.

A population-based cohort study was initiated in Georgia in March 2009 to collect epidemiologic data of malignant and non-malignant primary brain tumours. During the first year, 473 incident cases were identified. For a population of 4.3 million, the annual incidence rate was 10.25 per 100,000 inhabitants, age-standardized to the year 2000 US population. Non-malignant tumours constituted about 66 % of all tumours. Males accounted for 40 % and females for 60 % of the cases. Crude incidence rates by histology were highest for meningiomas (2.92/100,000), pituitary adenoma (1.16/100,000) and gliob

High-grade neuroepithelial tumor with BCL6 corepressor-alteration presenting pathological and radiological calcification: A case report.

A 5-year-old girl presented with headache and vomiting. Head computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a right frontal lobe tumor with marked calcification. The patient underwent resection surgery with suspicion of anaplastic ependymoma, and the tumor was gross totally removed. Pathological examination revealed areas of dense tumor cells with a high nucleocytoplasmic ratio and myxoid areas consisting of tumor cells with a round-shaped nucleus and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Perivascular pseudorosette, necrosis, circumscribed growth, and microcalcification were also observed. Immuno

Factors influencing neurocognitive function in patients with neuroepithelial tumors.

Though cognitive function is proven to be an independent predictor of survival in patients with intrinsic brain tumors, cognitive functions are still rarely considered. Aim of this study was to assess neurocognitive function and to identify risk factors for neurocognitive deficits. 103 patients with primary neuroepithelial tumors who received tumor resections or biopsies were included in this prospective study. The following data was acquired: mini-mental state examination, preoperative tumor volume, WHO grade, tumor entity and location, and the Karnofsky performance status scale. Furthermore,

Case of primary diffuse leptomeningeal gliomatosis.

Primary diffuse leptomeningeal gliomatosis (PDLG) is a rare and fatal disease characterized by diffuse infiltration of the leptomeninges by neoplastic glial cells without evidence of tumor in the brain parenchyma or spinal cord. We report a 60-year-old man with PDLG. He suffered transient right hemiparesis and generalized seizures. MRI showed diffuse leptomeningeal thickening and enhancement throughout the brain and spinal cord without any intraaxial involvement. Biopsy resulted in a diagnosis of glioblastoma with methylated MGMT promoter and wild-type IDH1. He underwent craniospinal radiother

Expression of KIAA 0864 protein in neuroepithelial tumors: an analysis based on the presence of monoclonal antibody HFB-16.

The KIAA 0864 (KA) protein is a putative protein of a cDNA from 100 cDNA clones that was newly determined from a set of size-fractionated human brain cDNA libraries and their coding potentials of large proteins (180-200 kD) by using in vitro transcription assays. To elucidate the correlation between the KA protein and neuroepithelial tumors (NETs), the present study assessed the KA expression by the NETs using immunohistochemical and Western blot analyses with HFB-16 monoclonal antibody. Among the 55 NETs, a moderate-to-intense KA protein immunoreactivity was observed in 8 of 8 medulloblastoma
