Asymmetric mechanotransduction by hair cells of the zebrafish lateral line.

In the lateral line system, water motion is detected by neuromast organs, fundamental units that are arrayed on a fish's surface. Each neuromast contains hair cells, specialized mechanoreceptors that convert mechanical stimuli, in the form of water movement, into electrical signals. The orientation of hair cells' mechanosensitive structures ensures that the opening of mechanically gated channels is maximal when deflected in a single direction. In each neuromast organ, hair cells have two opposing orientations, enabling bi-directional detection of water movement. Interestingly, Tmc2b and Tmc2a

Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials findings in individuals with motion sickness susceptibility.

BackgroundMotion sickness (MS) is a clinical condition that causes autonomic symptoms as a result of a mismatch in sensory inputs with unusual body and environmental movements. Although the cause of MS is not clearly established, one widely accepted theory is otolith asymmetry and canal-otolith conflict. Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (mVEMPs) are short latency inhibitory potentials recorded from the bilateral masseter muscle in response to bilateral or unilateral galvanic/acoustic stimuli. Studies have shown that mVEMP evaluates the integrity of the vestibulo-trigeminal path

Influence of Respiratory Motion on Dose Distribution in Gastric Mucosa-associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma Radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The present study investigated the effect of respiratory motion on planned radiotherapy (RT) dose for gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma using four-dimensional dose (4D-dose) accumulation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 4D-computed tomography (4D-CT) images of 10 patients with gastric MALT lymphomas were divided into 10 respiratory phases. Further, the 3D-dose was calculated using 3D conformal RT (3D-CRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans based on the average intensity projection (AIP) images. Then, both plans were recalculated according to each p

Swing Regulates Movement Direction in the Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus in the Presence of Food Cue: New Insights into Movement Patterns.

Regulating movement direction is essential in the locomotion of animals. Sea cucumbers, as eyeless animals, do not have eyes for the perception of the surrounding environment and food. They have a unique way of swinging their bodies when a food cue is detected, although they lack an important perceptual tool. The present study investigated the movement patterns of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus in the absence of a food cue (experiment 1) and in the presence of a food cue (experiment 2). In experiment 1, we found that the movement of sea cucumbers was close to a linear motion (motion l

Photomechanical B←N Molecular Crystals: From Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal [2 + 2] Photodimerization to Polymerization.

ConspectusOrganoboron-based crystalline compounds, which can respond to external stimuli (heat, light, electric field, or pressure), have already emerged as smart materials with well-directed functions. While various weak noncovalent interactions remain key to the supramolecular design, the exploitation of relatively strong boron-nitrogen dative bonds (B←N bonds) in constructing functional crystalline molecular and polymeric assemblies has recently attracted significant research interest. In particular, the strategic incorporation of B←N bonds into stimuli-responsive crystalline materials is p

Technical note: Toward implementation of MR-guided radiation therapy for laryngeal cancer with healthy volunteer imaging and a custom MR-CT larynx phantom.

PURPOSE: Internal motion of the larynx can cause normal tissue toxicity and/or tumor underdosage during radiotherapy. MR-guided radiation therapy (MRgRT) provides improved soft-tissue contrast for patient setup and real-time gating of radiation based on cine imaging of tumor motion, potentially making it an advantageous modality for laryngeal treatments. However, there are potential concerns regarding the small target size, proximity to heterogeneous tissue interfaces in the airway that may cause dosimetric errors in the presence of the magnetic field, and uncertainty about the ability of MR-l

Candida albicans endophthalmitis after penetrating keratoplasty.

We examined two patients who received contaminated corneas from the same organ donor during penetrating keratoplasty. Both developed Candida albicans endophthalmitis, which responded to surgical and antifungal therapy. On follow-up examination one patient had a visual acuity of hand motions, a pupillary membrane, and a macular scar. The other had a visual acuity of 20/100 and a clear graft.

Spatial orientation in weightlessness and readaptation to earth's gravity.

Unusual vestibular responses to head movements in weightlessness may produce spatial orientation illusions and symptoms of space motion sickness. An integrated set of experiments was performed during Spacelab 1, as well as before and after the flight, to evaluate responses mediated by the otolith organs and semicircular canals. A variety of measurements were used, including eye movements, postural control, perception of orientation, and susceptibility to space sickness.

[Results of a study of vestibular function and space perception in cosmonauts].

The results of studying the vestibular function and the function of spatial perception in 26 cosmonauts before and after 30 space flights are discussed. The typical postflight changes in these functions were: an increase in the reactivity of the otolith organ, a decrease in the sensitivity of semicircular canals, a decline in the accuracy of perception of spatial coordinates, asymmetry of most parameters, development of illusionary reactions inflight. The cosmonauts also showed individual variations with respect to the degrees of the above responses, the dynamics and length of adaptation, the

Mixed gonococcal and mycobacterial sepsis of the wrist.

Mycobacterial infections of the hand and wrist are rare. Concurrent infection of a joint by more than one organism is also unusual. A 25-year-old man developed wrist sepsis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycobacterium avium intracellularis. The infection was successfully treated by wrist drainage, carpal debridement, and intravenous antibiotics. Secondary carpal reconstruction was accomplished by delayed bone grafting and internal fixation to preserve radiocarpal motion.

An anatomical map of squid lateral lines.

Survival of aquatic animals requires sensing water movement. In both aquatic vertebrates and cephalopods, sensory cells arranged in 'lateral lines' on the surface of the animal detect water motion relative to the animal's body with mechanosensitive hair bundles1. Cephalopod lateral lines differ from those of fishes in hair bundle cytoskeletal composition, morphology, and receptor cell location. Fish have lateral lines arrayed on the head and body, whereas squid lateral lines, also termed epithelial lines or lateral line analogs, have only been described in detail on the head and arms2,3; it is

Visual-vestibular processing in the human Sylvian fissure.

Unlike other sensory systems, the cortical organization of the human vestibular system is not well established. A central role is assumed for the region of the posterior Sylvian fissure, close to the posterior insula. At this site, activation during vestibular stimulation has been observed in previous imaging studies and labeled as the parieto-insular vestibular cortex area (PIVC). However, vestibular responses are found in other parts of the Sylvian fissure as well, including a region that is referred to as the posterior insular cortex (PIC). The anatomical and functional relationship between

Long-range clustered connections within extrastriate visual area V5/MT of the rhesus macaque.

Visual area V5/MT in the rhesus macaque has a distinct functional organization, where neurons with specific preferences for direction of motion and binocular disparity are co-organized in columns or clusters. Here, we analyze the pattern of intrinsic connectivity within cortical area V5/MT in both parasagittal sections of the intact brain and tangential sections from flatmounted cortex using small injections of the retrograde tracer cholera toxin subunit b. Labeled cells were predominantly found in cortical layers 2, 3, and 6. Going along the cortical layers, labeled cells were concentrated in

The parietal lobe and the vestibular system.

The vestibular cortex differs in various ways from other sensory cortices. It consists of a network of several distinct and separate temporoparietal areas. Its core region, the parietoinsular vestibular cortex (PIVC), is located in the posterior insula and retroinsular region and includes the parietal operculum. The entire network is multisensory (in particular, vestibular, visual, and somatosensory). The peripheral and central vestibular systems are bilaterally organized; there are various pontomesencephalic brainstem crossings and at least two transcallosal connections of both hemispheres, b

Current concepts on structure-function relationships in the menisci.

The menisci are intricately organized structures that perform many tasks in the knee. We review their structure and function and introduce new data about their tibial and femoral surfaces. As the femur and tibia approach each other when the knee is bearing load, circumferential tension develops in the menisci, enabling the transmission of compressive load between the femoral and tibial cartilage layers. A low shear modulus is necessary for the tissue to adapt its shape to the changing radius of the femur as that bone moves relative to the tibia during joint articulation. The organization of th

Space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness, presumably triggered by sudden entry into a weightless environment, occurred with unexpected frequency and severity among astronauts who flew the Skylab missions. Recovery from symptoms was complete within 3-5 days, and as revealed by the Skylab M131 Human Vestibular Function Experiment, all crewmembers were immune to experimentally induced motion sickness after mission day 8. This syndrome has been recognized as a possible threat to the early mission well-being and operational efficiency of at least some individuals who will fly space missions in the future. The causes

The Stochastic Nature Exhibited by Proteins inside the Cell Membrane during Cell-to-Cell Communication.

The movement of proteins through the cell membrane is essential for cell-to-cell communication, which is a process that allows the body's immune system to identify any foreign cells, such as cells from another organism and pathogens; this movement is also essential for protein-to-protein interactions and protein-to-membrane interactions which play a significant role in drug discovery. This paper presents the stochastic nature exhibited by proteins during cell-to-cell communication. We study the movement of proteins through the cell membrane under the influence of an external force F and drag f

Clinical necessity of multi-image based (4DMIB) optimization for targets affected by respiratory motion and treated with scanned particle therapy - A comprehensive review.

4D multi-image-based (4DMIB) optimization is a form of robust optimization where different uncertainty scenarios, due to anatomy variations, are considered via multiple image sets (e.g., 4DCT). In this review, we focused on providing an overview of different 4DMIB optimization implementations, introduced various frameworks to evaluate the robustness of scanned particle therapy affected by breathing motion and summarized the existing evidence on the necessity of using 4DMIB optimization clinically. Expected potential benefits of 4DMIB optimization include more robust and/or interplay-effect-res
