The first successful separation of conjoined twins in 1689: some additions and corrections.

The surgical separation of a pair of conjoined twins in the year 1689 by Johannes Fatio was the subject of a recent article in this journal. The reference used as publication of the case was Fatio's book, Der Arzney Doctor, Helvetisch-Vernuftige Wehe-Mutter, published in 1752, although the case was presented in literature by three earlier sources. Two articles were published in the Miscellanea Curiosa sive Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germanicarum Academiae Imperialis Leopoldinae Naturae Curiosorum in 1689 by Emanuel Konig and another in 1690 by Theodor Zwinger who described and illustrated t…

New drugs for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis: research and development.

Chemotherapy of human African trypanosomiasis is problematic because of the high frequency of severe adverse events, the long duration and high cost of treatment, and an increasing number of treatment-refractory cases. New cost-efficient, easy-to-use drugs are urgently needed. Whereas basic research on potential drug targets is anchored in academia, the complex, highly regulated and very expensive process of preclinical and clinical drug development is almost exclusively in the hands of pharmaceutical companies. Jennifer Keiser, August Stich and Christian Burri here review, from the angle of i…

How peer behavior shapes academic misconduct: The roles of moral disengagement and shame.

Academic misconduct predisposition remains an important concern in higher education, and peer behavior perception has emerged as a relevant correlate of students' academic integrity-related tendencies. Drawing on social cognitive theory and Bandura's moral disengagement theory, this study examined how perceived peer misconduct is associated with students'self-reported predisposition toward academic misconduct through moral disengagement and shame. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 418 undergraduate students from a comprehensive university in Shandong, China. Structural eq

Retention of fellows to the faculty at a research-intensive academic medical center: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: As clinical practice provides >50% of medical schools' revenue, research-intensive medical schools often seek to retain fellows with clinical-care interests. Fellows' considerations when deciding whether to stay at research-intensive institutions where they trained remain understudied. We sought to identify experiential factors associated with faculty-position offers and decisions of fellows in training. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study using a survey and semi-structured interview. We invited 471 fellows training in all clinical departments at our institution to complet

Off the Books: A Scoping Review of the Minority Tax and Professional Advancement in Academic Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The minority tax is an understudied phenomenon by which underrepresented in medicine (URiM) physicians are more often responsible for nonpromotable activities: mentorship, education, outreach, and committee service. This review aims to summarize definitions of minority tax, explore its possible impact in academic surgery, and present gaps in the literature. METHODS: A systematic search across SCOPUS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC, and PsycINFO was conducted. Original research articles studying URiM individuals in academic medicine/surgery were eligible. A priori outcomes of interest wer

All the right resources, still running on empty: A moderated moderation model of workaholism and ego depletion among academic researchers.

Academic researchers frequently work under conditions characterized by persistent publication pressure, blurred work-life boundaries, and continuous cognitive engagement. In such environments, workaholism may gradually erode self-regulatory capacity and contribute to ego depletion. Although personal and situational resources are generally assumed to reduce these adverse effects, their combined influence remains insufficiently understood in academic settings. Drawing primarily on Conservation of Resources theory, this study examines whether emotional intelligence and recovery experiences jointl

Prevalence of financial and social challenges and their associations with major satisfaction in animal and dairy science undergraduates.

Student success is shaped by both financial stability and social connectedness, yet little research has examined these dynamics within Animal and Dairy Science programs. This study investigated financial well-being, peer relationships, and academic and career satisfaction among 298 undergraduates in Animal Science (ANS), Dairy Science (DYS), and General Pre-Veterinary (GENPV) at a large land-grant university (33% response rate). A significant GPA difference of 0.45 points was observed between respondents and non-respondents (3.47 ± 0.52 vs. 3.02 ± 0.84; P < 0.01), suggesting possible non-respo

Lead in Newark drinking water: a successful community-driven data collection and academic-community partnership.

From 2017 to 2019, Newark, NJ exceeded the federal action level for lead in drinking water of 15 μg/L. We established an academic-community partnership to address residents' concerns. We distributed 500 tap water sampling kits to residents with instructions on how to collect three sequential samples: first draw, and after 1 and 5 min of flushing the tap. Thirty-three percent (N = 165) of kits were returned and 411 samples analyzed. Lead was detected in all water samples (range: 0.01-685 μg/L). Thirty-seven percent of homes had at least one sample >1 μg/L; 17% had at least one sample >5 μg/L. T

Reimagining research equity and beneficial community impact: reflections from the GSK Africa Open Lab inaugural cohort.

Global health research continues to rely heavily on knowledge generated outside the regions that bear the greatest disease burden, reinforcing structural inequities in scientific leadership and innovation. The GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Africa Open Lab (AOL) was established to address this imbalance by investing directly in African-led research capacity. This reflective analysis examined how participation in the inaugural GSL-AOL cohort influenced research capacity, scientific independence, and career development among early-career African researchers. The reflection was guided by the question: How

Differences in attitudes among health professions students and educators toward people experiencing homelessness: Novel correlations with physical comfort, prior experiences, and interest in learning.

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) face significant barriers to primary care, compounded by stigma from healthcare professionals. Health professions education offers a critical window of time to shape attitudes, yet research suggests these attitudes can worsen during training. A cross-sectional survey at a multi-professional graduate institution assessed attitudes toward PEH among students and educators across seven health professions colleges. Attitudes varied significantly by profession, with osteopathic medicine and graduate nursing reporting more favorable views than pharmacy, veterina

Microsecond triplet emission from organic chromophore-transition metal dichalcogenide hybrids via through-space spin orbit proximity effect.

Efficient light generation from triplet states of organic molecules has been a hot yet demanding topic in academia and the display industry. Herein, we propose a strategy for developing triplet emitter by creating heterostructures of organic chromophores and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). These heterostructures emit microsecond phosphorescence at room temperature, while their organic chromophores intrinsically exhibit millisecond phosphorescence under vibration dissipation-free conditions. This enhancement in phosphorescence is indicative of significantly enhanced spin-orbit coupling…

siRNA drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with a few FDA-approved drugs that provide modest symptomatic benefits and only two FDA-approved disease-modifying treatments for AD. The advancements in understanding the causative genes and non-coding sequences at the molecular level of the pathophysiology of AD have resulted in several exciting research papers that employed small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based therapy. Although siRNA is being sought by academia and biopharma industries, several challenges still need to be addressed. We comprehensively report the latest advan…
