Sural nerve lesions in patients with clinically manifest diabetic neuropathy were investigated electron microscopically. Myelinated nerve fibers were reduced in all the diabetic patients. Axonal degeneration of both myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers was most conspicuous finding in the diabetic sural nerves. Structural changes of the axons were represented by axonal dwindling, depletion of axoplasmic organelles, vacuolarization and an increase in neurofilaments. Accumulation of glycogen-like particles and deposition of electron homogeneous amorphous materials were noted within a few axon

Microvascular complications of diabetes seem to be clustered and put patients at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). This was a questionnaire-based study designed to screen for the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), defined as the score in the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) above 2, and to evaluate its association with other complication of diabetes, including CVD. There were 184 patients included into the study. The prevalence of DPN in the study group was 37.5%. The regression model analysis revealed that the presence of DPN was significant

In the Prague register of all adult diabetics by April 1, 1992 data on 1443 patients above 18 years with type 1 DM were recorded. In 42.2% of diabetics diabetic retinopathy was observed which is manifested most frequently after 11 to 15 years' persistence of diabetes. Proteinuria, the first sign of diabetic nephropathy, was found in 13.8% of the group, 5.4% of the diabetics are in the stage of renal insufficiency. Nephropathy is 3 to 4 times more frequent in diabetics with retinopathy. Peripheral neuropathy is found in 32.8% type 1 diabetics.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diabetic neuropathy is a prevalent complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but the contribution of dietary factors to neuropathy severity remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigated associations between dietary patterns, nutrient intake, and neuropathy severity in 300 adults with T2DM from Northeastern Romania.
METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and five dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis. Neuropathy severity was analyzed as an ordinal outcome using logistic regres

BACKGROUND: Impaired neuromuscular function in individuals with diabetes can adversely affect gait kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography, potentially increasing the risk of serious complications such as plantar ulcers and amputations. However, it remains unclear whether these changes are associated with alterations in muscle synergies. This study aims to examine muscle synergies in individuals with diabetes.
METHODS: Surface electromyography recordings were obtained from seven lower extremity muscles (vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, lateral gastrocnemius

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus. Among all complications of DPN, diabetic foot (DF) can cause a myriad of symptoms and impact the quality of life. This study aimed to review the prevalence of DPN and DF in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region based on the publications available. This systematic review can be a cornerstone for further research and it summarizes the literature published on the prevalence of DPN and DF for the last two decades in the MENA region.
METHODOLOGY: The databases, PubMed, ResearchGate, Scop

NOD mice deficient for the costimulatory molecule B7-2 (NOD-B7-2KO mice) are protected from autoimmune diabetes but develop a spontaneous autoimmune peripheral neuropathy that resembles human diseases Guillain-Barre syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. Similar observations have now been made in conventional NOD mice. We have shown previously that this disease was mediated by autoreactive T cells inducing demyelination in the peripheral nervous system. In this study, we analyzed the molecular pathways involved in the disease. Our data showed that neuropathy de

Diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy (DLSRPN) (other names include diabetic amyotrophy) is well recognized, unlike the non-diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy (LSRPN), which has received less attention. Our objective was to characterize the natural history and outcome of LSRPN and to assess whether it is similar to the diabetic variety in its symptoms, course, electrophysiological features, quantitative sensory and autonomic findings, and the underlying pathophysiology. We studied 57 patients with LSRPN and 33 patients with DLSRPN. We found that the age of onset, course, k

The most widely used methods to assess nerve blood flow in diabetics rats are hydrogen clearance polarography and laser Doppler flowmetry, techniques requiring surgical exposure of the nerve. In these experiments, we examined the hypothesis that the trauma of surgical exposure introduces an important and hitherto largely unrecognized variable that could account for discordant reports on nerve blood flow changes induced by diabetes. We used the noninvasive (for sciatic nerve) reference sample microsphere method to quantify sciatic nerve blood flow in unexposed va. surgically exposed nerves in r

INTRODUCTION: Intensive glycaemic control is essential for managing Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), yet rapid metabolic optimization can trigger Treatment-Induced Neuropathy of Diabetes (TIND). This iatrogenic condition, characterized by acute neuropathic pain and autonomic dysfunction, is increasingly relevant with the use of advanced automated insulin delivery (AID) systems.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male with a 10-year history of poorly controlled T1DM (baseline HbA1c 13.7%) was transitioned to an automated hybrid closed-loop system (Medtronic MiniMed 780G). Following a rapid HbA1c

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a major complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) that reduces quality of life and increases the risk of foot ulcers and amputations. Early detection is essential, and blood-based biomarkers may support improved screening and timely intervention. This study aimed to identify novel circulating biomarkers for the identification of DPN in patients with T2D.
METHODS: In the screening phase, plasma samples from 43 participants (10 healthy volunteers [HV], 20 T2D without complications, and 13 T2D with DPN) were analyzed using an antibody arra

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a growing issue, with controversial data in the terms of prevalence and evaluation timelines. Currently, there are no clear standards for its early detection. Therefore, our aim was to assess the contribution of the Michigan neuropathy screening instrument (MNSI), lipid profile, serum neuron specific enolase (NSE), and serum heat shock protein 27 (HSP 27) to the prediction of DPN in children and adolescents with T1DM.
METHODS: In this case-control study, fifty children diagnose
