Combination of laser plus 5-fluorouracil for the treatment of extensive genital condylomata acuminata.

Although laser is effective in the treatment of genital condylomata, patients with extensive lesions frequently require more than one treatment. The present study was undertaken to investigate whether the cure rate achieved by a single laser treatment could be improved by adding topical 5% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Twenty patients with extensive genital condylomata were treated with laser alone. Twenty patients comparable to the first group in age, number, size, and distribution of the condylomata were treated by laser and 5-FU. The first application of 5% 5-FU cream was carried out at the end of

Topical treatment of penile condylomata acuminata with podophyllin, podophyllotoxin and colchicine. A comparative study.

The effect of alcoholic solutions with 20% podophyllin from Podophyllum peltatum and Podophyllum emodi, 8% podophyllotoxin, and 8% colchicine, when applied to penile condylomata acuminata in 227 men, were statistically alike. Of the patients initially judged to be cured after 1-2 applications, 13% showed recurrence, thus bringing down the permanent cure frequency to only 43%. Local side effects were absent after only half the series of colchicine applications, whereas as much as about 3/4 of the treatment course with podophyllin and pure podophyllotoxin could be completed without provoking dis

Multimodal treatment approach for giant condylomata acuminata complicated by lichen sclerosus: A case report.

A 65-year-old male presented with cauliflower-like growths on the penis for two years. Physical examination revealed erythema and cutaneous atrophy on the prepuce, glans, and external urethral meatus, with diffuse cauliflower-like proliferations on this basis. Based on the clinical and histopathological findings, a diagnosis of condylomata acuminata (CA) with concomitant lichen sclerosus (LS) was made. The patient received a multimodal treatment involving 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT), Holmium-laser, and curettage, which led to significant improvement of the lesions. No

Long-term follow-up of endoscopic therapy of anal canal condylomata acuminata with podophyllotoxin.

BACKGROUND: Condylomata acuminata of the anal canal, a common sexually transmitted disease, are difficult-to-treat lesions with a high recurrence rate after initial successful treatment. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate by anoscopy the efficacy of podophyllotoxin 0.5% solution topically applied for the treatment of anal warts. METHODS: We prospectively studied consecutive patients with condylomata acuminata of the anal canal that spared the rectum. They were treated with 0.5% podophyllotoxin solution topically applied on the warts, by anoscopy. Podophyllotoxin solution was administered on

Risk factors for incident and recurrent condylomata acuminata among women. A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Condylomata acuminata is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) diagnosed in the United States, yet relatively little research has been conducted on the determinants of this disease in well-defined populations. GOAL: To determine the exposures that predispose a woman to the development of condylomata acuminata or genital warts. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based case-control study was conducted among enrollees of Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound. Patients (94 women with incident and 55 women with recurrent condyloma) were diagnosed between April 1, 1987

[Monstrous Buschke-Loewenstein tumor (condylomata acuminata gigantea) with transition to invasive squamous epithelial cancer].

The case of a 34-year-old female is reported, who has suffered from recurring condylomata acuminata of the anogenital region since she was 16. In the further course of the disease multiple Buschke-Loewenstein tumors developed, and finally an invasively growing, highly differentiated, keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. The course of the disease was complicated by severe septicemia. In the framework of multimodal therapy, laser resection was the preferred method of surgical intervention. A systemic or local interferon treatment has only a prophylactic character in this stage of the disease.

Congenital condylomata acuminata with meconium staining of amniotic fluid and fetal hydrocephalus: case report.

An infant was born with condylomata acuminata by caesarean section to a mother who had the same disease during the antenatal period. Prior to delivery amniocentesis done to obtain fluid for surfactant test revealed meconium stained amniotic fluid (MSAF). There was no history of premature rupture of membranes neither did the infant get into direct contact with maternal lower genital tract. The circumstances here suggest congenital (prenatal) transmission of the human papilloma virus (HPV). This is the only documented case of such transmission with fetal membranes remaining intact upto the time

Recurrent condylomata acuminata treated with recombinant interferon alfa-2a. A multicenter double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial. Condylomata International Collaborative Study Group.

Systemic interferon has been advocated as an effective therapy for recurrent genital warts. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter international trial involving 172 patients with recurrent condylomata was conducted using systemic interferon alfa-2a in doses of 3 or 9 MIU three times per week for 4 weeks. The treatment period was followed by a treatment-free follow-up period of 2 months. Complete responders at month 3 were followed up to 9 months or until they had a recurrence, whichever occurred first. The combined rates of complete response (total disappearance of all lesions without

Deep-targeted photodynamic therapy: A patented drug delivery system for total urethral condylomata acuminata.

BACKGROUND: Treating total urethral condyloma acuminata (CA) remains challenging. Although 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (5-ALA-PDT) is a recommended first-line treatment for mucosal CA, conventional drug delivery fails to cover deep urethral lesions, often leading to recurrence. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a novel self-developed drug delivery system designed to improve deep drug administration for 5-ALA-PDT in total urethral CA, aiming to enhance efficacy and reduce recurrence. METHODS: The system utilizes a specialized design to deliver 5-ALA to deep urethral areas. A representativ

Peripheral inflammatory biomarkers as predictors of recurrence in surgically-treated anogenital condylomata acuminata patients.

The aim of this study was to examine the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in patients with anogenital condylomata acuminata (CA) and their association with recurrence and squamous intraepithelial neoplasia development. We conducted a descriptive study in 95 patients that had undergone surgical treatment for CA. The descriptive data, disease characteristics, and pre-treatment peripheral inflammatory biomarkers (PIBs) were recorded retrospectively. All parameters were compared in those with recurrent and non-re

Human papilloma virus type and recurrence rate after surgical clearance of anal condylomata acuminata.

BACKGROUND: Anal condylomata acuminata (ACA) are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection which is transmitted by close physical and sexual contact. The result of surgical treatment of ACA has an overall success rate of 71% to 93%, with a recurrence rate between 4% and 29%. The aim of this study was to assess a possible association between HPV type and ACA recurrence after surgical treatment. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 140 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for ACA from January 1990 to December 2005 at our tertiary University Hospital. We confirmed ACA by

Risk factors for incident and recurrent condylomata acuminata among men. A population-based study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rapid increase in the number of physician office visits for condylomata acuminata and the association of human papillomavirus and cancer has prompted renewed interest in the epidemiology of this sexually-transmitted disease. Few epidemiologic studies have examined what risk factors are associated with condylomata acuminata in men. GOAL: To determine what factors may predispose a man to the occurrence of condylomata acuminata. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based case-control study was conducted among male members of a health maintenance organization. Patients were

[Differentiation of condylomata acuminata from pseudocondyloma by using multiple primer pairs polymerase chain reaction].

Condylomata acuminata were differentiated from pseudocondyloma by using multiple primer pairs polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The paraffin-embedded tissues of 95 cases of condylomata acuminata and 33 cases of pseudocondyloma were detected for HPV DNA. Results show that HPV 6/11 DNA are found in 86/95 (90.5%) cases of condylomata acuminata, and no HPV DNA is detected in 33 cases of pseudocondyloma. The results suggest that pseudocondyloma is not associated with HPV. Multiple primer pairs PCR technique is a preferable method for differentiating condylomata acuminata from pseudocondylo

Intralesional interferon alfa-2b treatment of condylomata acuminata previously resistant to podophyllum resin application.

The safety and efficacy of intralesionally administered interferon alfa-2b were assessed in 11 patients suffering from condylomata acuminata for four to 10 months for whom application of podophyllum resin had proved unsuccessful. Three warts from each patient were injected with 10(6) IU interferon alfa-2b three times a week for three weeks. Treatment was followed by a 13 week observation period. Interferon alfa-2b treatment resulted in a highly significant (p less than 0.0001) reduction in the mean size of the treated warts, which decreased from an initial size of 29 mm2 to 2-3 mm2 by week 16.
