Congenital bilateral microphthalmos is a rare malformation of the eye, which ranges from extreme to mild reduction of total axial length. Microphthalmos may occur as an isolated ocular abnormality or as part of a systemic disorder, and different classifications of the condition have been attempted. We describe a large pedigree with 14 persons in four generations affected with bilateral microphthalmos without other ocular or systemic signs. An autosomal dominant trait with complete penetrance is proposed. Five subjects underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation. The total axial length was

It was recently established that the axial power, the refractive power required by the eye for a sharp retinal image in an eye of a certain axial length, and the total refractive power of the eye may both be described by a bi-exponential function as a function of age (Rozema, 2023). Inspired by this result, this work explores whether these bi-exponential functions are able to simulate the various known courses of refractive development described in the literature, such as instant emmetropization, persistent hypermetropia, developing hypermetropia, myopia, instant homeostasis, modulated develop

High myopia can lead to pathologic myopia and visual impairment, whereas its causes are unclear. We retrospectively researched high myopia cases from patient records to investigate the association between axial elongation and myopic maculopathy. Sixty-four eyes were examined in patients who visited the department between July 2017 and June 2018, had an axial length of 26 mm or more, underwent fundus photography, and had their axial length measured twice or more. The average axial length was 28.29 ± 1.69 mm (mean ± standard deviation). The average age was 58.3 ± 14.4 years old. Myopic maculopat

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Axial length is a primary outcome in the management of progressive myopia. However, young children may have difficulty fixating during these measurements compared to older children, which can result in higher measurement variability. This may affect perceived axial length progression, leading to inappropriate management.
BACKGROUND: This study assessed the impact of patient age on measurement variability for axial length measurements taken with the IOLMaster 700 and IOLMaster 500 in myopic children.
METHODS: A retrospective review of records was undertaken at a university
