Identification of Degenerated Murine Facial Nerves With Fluorescence Labeling After Transection Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Delayed peripheral nerve repair is complicated by nerve degeneration and atrophy that can prevent identification. We use a murine facial nerve transection model to demonstrate the efficacy of ALM-488 (bevonescein) in labeling degenerated facial nerves with quantitative image analysis and qualitative survey data. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Laboratory. METHODS: Ten wild-type mice underwent transection of the lower facial nerve division with subsequent degeneration. Either 9 (n = 5 mice) or 12 (n = 5 mice) weeks later, mice underwent intravenous infusion of ALM

Trigeminal Sensory Supply Is Essential for Motor Recovery after Facial Nerve Injury.

Recovery of mimic function after facial nerve transection is poor. The successful regrowth of regenerating motor nerve fibers to reinnervate their targets is compromised by (i) poor axonal navigation and excessive collateral branching, (ii) abnormal exchange of nerve impulses between adjacent regrowing axons, namely axonal crosstalk, and (iii) insufficient synaptic input to the axotomized facial motoneurons. As a result, axotomized motoneurons become hyperexcitable but unable to discharge. We review our findings, which have addressed the poor return of mimic function after facial nerve injurie

Nimodipine-mediated re-myelination after facial nerve crush injury in rats.

This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of nimodipine-mediated neural repair after facial nerve crush injury in rats. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: healthy controls, surgery alone, and surgery plus nimodipine. A facial nerve crush injury model was constructed. Immediately after surgery, the rats in the surgery plus nimodipine group were administered nimodipine, 6 mg/kg/day, for a variable numbers of days. The animals underwent electromyography (EMG) before surgery and at 3, 10, or 20 days after surgery. After sacrifice, nerve samples were stained with hematoxy

The effect of etanercept and methylprednisolone on functional recovery of the facial nerve after crush injury.

OBJECTIVE: To establish whether etanercept, a TNF-α antagonist, is an alternative and effective treatment on facial nerve after crush injury. METHOD: Fifty-four rats underwent exposure of the left main trunk of the facial nerve followed by a standard crush injury. Animals were randomly divided into 3 groups: control group, methylprednisolone-treated group, and etanercept-treated group. All these groups were divided into 2 subgroups; animals were sacrificed on the 4th day after facial crush injury in the first subgroup and on the 28th day in the second subgroup. Functional recovery of vibrissa

Evoked electromyography to rocuronium in orbicularis oris and gastrocnemius in facial nerve injury in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Muscles innervated by the facial nerve show different sensitivities to muscle relaxants than muscles innervated by somatic nerves, especially in the presence of facial nerve injury. We compared the evoked electromyography (EEMG) response of orbicularis oris and gastrocnemius in with and without a non-depolarizing muscle relaxant in a rabbit model of graded facial nerve injury. METHODS: Differences in EEMG response and inhibition by rocuronium were measured in the orbicularis oris and gastrocnemius muscles 7 to 42 d after different levels of facial nerve crush injuries in adult rab

Characterization of bilateral trigeminal constriction injury using an operant facial pain assay.

In order to better understand and treat neuropathic pain, scientific study must use methods that can assess pain processing at the cortical level where pain is truly perceived. Operant behavior paradigms can accomplish this. We used an operant task to evaluate changes following chronic constriction injury to the trigeminal nerves. We also relate these behavioral changes to immunohistochemistry of transient receptor potential channels vanilloid 1 and melastatin 8 (TRPV1 and TRPM8) in the trigeminal ganglia. Following nerve injury, successful performance of the operant task was reduced and avers

Artistic assault: an unusual penetrating head injury reported as a trivial facial trauma.

The authors report a case of penetrating head injury that presented with a deceptively mild complaint. To our knowledge, it is the first report of a paint brush penetrating the brain. The patient reported being punched in the left eye and presented with a minor headache, swelling around the left orbit, a small cut on the cheek and slightly reduced left eye abduction. After radiological evaluation, a penetrating head injury was diagnosed. Under general anesthesia, through a lateral eyelid incision a 10.5 cm long paint brush, which had penetrated from the left orbit to the right thalamus, was re

Facial nerve injury-induced disinhibition in the primary motor cortices of both hemispheres.

Unilateral facial nerve transection induces plastic reorganization of the somatotopic order in the primary motor cortex area (MI). This process is biphasic and starts with a transient disinhibition of connections between cortical areas in both hemispheres. Little is known about the underlying mechanisms. Here, cortical excitability has been studied by paired pulse electrical stimulation, applied either within the MI or peripherally to the trigeminal nerve, while the responses were recorded bilaterally in the MI. The ratios between the amplitudes of the second and first evoked potentials (EPs o

Rabbit facial nerve regeneration in autologous nerve grafts after antecedent injury.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of incomplete antecedent injuries on subsequent facial nerve regeneration within cable graft repairs is not known. The purpose of this study is to compare facial nerve regeneration after an immediate and delayed neural cable graft repair. METHOD: Rabbit facial nerve regeneration after complete transectional injuries of the buccal division was compared in two experimental models. In one, a 10-mm segment of the nerve was transected, rotated 180 degrees, and immediately repaired as a cable graft (N=8). In the second, a preliminary nerve crush was allowed to recover over a 4

Assessment, documentation, and treatment of a developing facial asymmetry following early childhood injury.

Prepubertal trauma is often implicated as the cause of asymmetric growth of the mandible. A series of photographs taken before and after early childhood injury to the orofacial complex illustrates the development of a three-dimensional dentofacial deformity in a patient. The diagnosis and combined surgical orthodontic treatment plan to correct the facial asymmetry and malocclusion are discussed.

[Study on substance P immunoreactivity after acute crush injury to facial nerve].

This paper presents the change in substance P immunoreactivity (SP-IR) after acute crush injury to the vertical part of facial nerve of normal cats by using immunohistochemical and immunocytochemical techniques combined with immunoelectronic microscopy. The electroneuromyogram (ENOG) shows that the cats have suffered from fully peripheral facial paralysis. It is found that the SP-IR positive products and fibers increase in the other part of facial nerve (including the non-injured part of vertical segment and level segment) after injury, especially six days later. As a result, it is suggested t

Facial nerve injury in acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma) surgery: etiology and prevention.

Facial nerve injury associated with acoustic neuroma surgery has declined in incidence but remains a clinical concern. A retrospective analysis of 611 patients surgically treated for acoustic neuroma between 1973 and 1994 was undertaken to understand patterns of facial nerve injury more clearly and to identify factors that influence facial nerve outcome. Anatomical preservation of the facial nerve was achieved in 596 patients (97.5%). In the immediate postoperative period, 62.1% of patients displayed normal or near-normal facial nerve function (House-Brackmann Grade 1 or 2). This number rose t

Cranial fractures associated with facial fractures: a review of mechanism, type, and severity of injury.

A 100-month retrospective review was undertaken to identify the population characteristics of patients with both facial and cranial fractures and to establish the relationships between them. A 4.4% incidence of cranial fractures was found in the 882 patients with facial fractures. These patients tended to be males (85%) between the ages of 16 and 30 years (54%) who were involved in motor vehicle accidents (64%). Patients with midfacial fractures predominated (70%), and these injuries were most frequently associated with fractures of the frontal (38%), sphenoid (24%), or temporal (22%) bones. N

A biomechanical impact test system for head and facial injury assessment and model development.

A biomechanical test system has been developed and validated to conduct controlled uniaxial impact experiments of head and facial trauma. The design reduces off-axis accelerations which are not in the direction of impact and allows accurate positioning of test specimens. Impact forces, displacement histories, impulses at impact and spectral responses are compared to free-fall test results at contact velocities representative of facial injuries (2.5, 3.1 and 3.8 m s-1). Models based on the experimental results are developed to reveal stiffness and inertial properties of impact for use in the de
