BACKGROUND: Micro-crystals of calcium phosphate have been detected on the aortic valve of patients with aortic stenosis using scanning electron microscopy. It is not known whether crystalisation is specific to heart valve tissue or a general blood-derived process.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) provides sub-nanometre-scale details in volumetric samples. In dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa the genetic defect of anchoring fibrils leads to cleavage beneath the basement membrane, with its consequent loss. Hypothyroid rats show alterations in the mobility of sperm recovered from their epididymides. The AgNOR technique, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate changes in epithelial cells from epididymides of rats treated with (131)I. Counting of NORs did not permit detection of changes in the proliferative capacity of epididymides of hypothyroid animals. Transmission electron microscopy revealed changes in the mitochondria of hypothyroid rats that probably are associated with incipient apoptosis.

The angioarchitecture of young rabbits' palatine gingiva was studied by using the corrosion resin cast method. The vascular corrosion casts were obtained using low viscosity resin (Mercox CL-2B) and were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The palatine gingiva had areas with various arrangements. The capillaries of the palatine gingiva and interdental papillae had numerous projections, but in the gingival sulcus, the blood vessels were arranged in a flattened network from their capillary extremities. BACKGROUND: Most adhesion experiments involve observations at a single time point. We developed a method to evaluate abdominal adhesions to surgical mesh by sequential laparoscopy.
STUDY DESIGN: An abdominal wall defect was created in rats and repaired with polypropylene mesh. Sequential laparoscopic evaluation of adhesion formation was performed in each animal. A case of BK virus cystitis in a 5 year old boy is reported. This patient, who was not immunocompromised, had had acute cystitis for two weeks. Many intracytoplasmic inclusions were observed in urinary sediment smears stained by the Papanicolaou method.
