CDSNet: An automated method for assessing growth stages from various anatomical regions in lateral cephalograms based on deep learning.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of growth stages, typically determined by Cervical Vertebrae Maturation (CVM), plays a crucial role in orthodontics. However, there is a potential deviation from actual growth stages when using CVM. This study aimed to introduce CDSNet, an interpretable deep learning model for assessing growth stages based on cervical vertebrae, dentition, and frontal sinus in lateral cephalograms. METHODS: A dataset of 1,732 pairs of lateral cephalograms and hand-wrist radiographs from patients who underwent orthodontic treatment was annotated by four dentists. Benchmarks were cond…

Craniocervical arachnoid cyst in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome: a unique case: case report.

Klippel-Feil syndrome, or brevicollis, is a complex congenital disorder caused by the improper segmentation of the cervical vertebrae. The authors present the very rare case of a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome who presented with an intradural arachnoid cyst at the craniocervical junction. They also examine possible factors contributing to this association. A 46-year-old woman presented with complaints of progressively worsening headaches and dizziness of 18 months' duration. She also demonstrated mild bilateral upper-extremity weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed fused cervical ve…

Vertebral artery location in relation to the vertebral body as determined by two-dimensional computed tomography evaluation.

STUDY DESIGN: This study analyzed the precise two-dimensional location of the vertebral artery within cervical vertebrae as determined by measurements obtained from axial computed tomographic images of the cervical spine. OBJECTIVE: To determine the margin of safety necessary to avoid vertebral artery laceration during central decompression and lateral nerve root decompression for cervical spinal stenosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Laceration of the vertebral artery is a rare but potentially catastrophic complication of anterior decompressive surgery of the cervical spine. METHODS: The me…

Cervical lordosis, as a crucial parameter … s and extensors), and EMVR (Effective muscle volume ratio of cervical flexors and extensors) of the cervical vertebrae C3-6 between the two groups. The MVRD, EMVRD, MVR, and EMVR of the patient's cervical vertebrae C3-6 exhibited negative correlations with both the lateral and flexion Cobb angles. In contrast, the extension Cobb angle was negatively correlated only …

Odontoid hypoplasia with vertebral cervical subluxation and ventriculomegaly in metatropic dysplasia.

Our experience with 12 patients with metatropic dysplasia has demonstrated two important and treatable complications: odontoid hypoplasia with subluxation of the first and second cervical vertebrae, and ventriculomegaly. Hypoplasia and lack of ossification of the odontoid process were noted in all cases. Subluxation of these two vertebrae was demonstrated in all six patients who had lateral flexion-extension radiographs; three had subluxation even in a neutral position, and sudden odontoid dislocation developed in another after a simple fall. Four individuals have had surgical fusion of the ce…

Ossification of the vertebral column in human foetuses: histological and computed tomography studies.

There is no agreement in the literature as to the time of the onset and progress of the vertebral column ossification. The aim of the present study was to determine the precise sequence of ossification of the neural arches and vertebral centra.Histological and radiographic studies were performed on 27 human foetuses aged from 9 to 21 weeks. It was found that the ossification of vertebrae commences in foetuses aged 10 and 11 weeks. Ossification centres appear first for neuralarches in the cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae and by the end of 11th week they are present in all thoracic and lumb

Evolutionary rates and shape variation along the anuran vertebral column with attention to phylogeny, body size, and ecology.

The vertebral column is critical to a vertebrate species' flexibility and skeletal support, making vertebrae a clear target for selection. A … y notion that trunk vertebrae evolve uniformly. We discovered the highest evolutionary rates in the cervical vertebrae and in the more caudal trunk vertebrae. We found little evidence for selection pressures related to adult or larval ecology affecting vertebrae evolution, but we did find body size was highly associated with vertebrae shape and microhabitat (mainly …

Miscarriage is associated with cervical ribs in thoracic outlet syndrome patients.

The constancy of the number of cervical vertebrae in mammals is probably the result of selection against associated variations. A survey among patients with and without cervical ribs showed an association between miscarriage and the presence of cervical ribs. This supports the hypothesized selection against variations in cervical vertebral number.

Klippel-Feil Syndrome with Cervical Diastematomyelia in an Adult with Extensive Cervicothoracic Fusions: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Split cord malformation (SCM) is a developmental disorder that is usually symptomatic and diagnosed in childhood. The majority of these lesions are in the thoracic and lumbar spine, with only 1%-3% of cases found in the cervical spine. This is a case report of a 55-year-old female patient with an unremarkable medical history who presented with neck pain. Upon workup, she was found to have extensive developmental anomalies throughout her cervical and thoracic spine, including an incidentally found type 2 SCM and multiple autofused vertebrae. There are only 6 similar studies published in the lit

Mandible and tongue-splitting approach for giant cell tumor of axis.

In two cases with a giant cell tumor of the axis, the mandible and tongue-splitting approach permitted excision of the tumor and anterior fusion of the spine from the atlas to the third cervical vertebra. With this approach, there is no need to extend or rotate the cervical spine during the operation. In addition, the operative field extends from the clivus to the fourth cervical vertebra, and safe and sufficient anterior decompression is possible. Although this approach has some disadvantages, contemporary techniques of intravenous hyperalimentation and postoperative respiratory management pr

Pushing the limits of the Leksell stereotactic frame for spinal lesions up to C3: fixation at the maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Spinal radiosurgery is not considered in the domain of traditional Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) setup. The major obstacles in GKRS for upper cervical spine lesions remain in difficulty of frame fixation, avoiding collision and maintaining the integrity of the relative position of the lesion from image acquisition to treatment. METHODOLOGY: The supraorbital margin remains the standard lowest fixation point for Leksell stereotactic frame. We describe fixation at the maxilla to target and treat upper cervical spine lesions (up to C3 vertebra) with measures to ensure cervical immob

Tuberculosis of the Cervical Spine: A Case Report.

Tuberculosis of the cervical spine is a rare but deadly form of tuberculosis (TB), where the infection affects the cervical vertebrae or bones of the neck. It is also known as Pott's disease. The causative organism is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It usually occurs when TB bacteria spread from other body parts, such as the lungs, to the cervical vertebrae through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. It also shows extrapulmonary involvement, including the central nervous, genitourinary, and lymphatic systems, bones, and joints. Tuberculosis of the spine is often seen. Cervical spine tuberculosis …

Vertebrae length and ultra-structure measurements of collagen fibrils and mineral content in the vertebrae of lordotic gilthead seabreams (Sparus aurata).

Skeletal deformities of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) are a major factor affecting the production cost, the external morphology and survival and growth of the fish. Adult individuals of S. aurata were collected from a commercial fish farm in Greece and were divided into two groups: one with the presence of lordosis, a skeletal deformity, and one without any skeletal deformity. Fishes were X-rayed, and cervical, abdominal and caudal vertebrae lengths were measured. Vertebrae were taken from the site of the vertebral column where lordosis occurred. One part was decalcified and prepared for c

Osteophytes on the zygapophyseal (facet) joints of the cervical spine (C3-C7): A skeletal study.

Previous studies have reported that osteophytes in the cervical vertebrae may cause immobility, neck stiffness, osteoarthritis, headaches, nerve entrapment syndromes, and compression of the vertebral artery. Our objective was to explore the osteophytes' expression on zygapophyseal joints C3-C7. This is a cross-sectional observational skeletal study. The study sample comprised 273 human skeletons of both sexes, aged 20-93, housed at the Natural History Museum, OH, USA. A grading system assessed the presence and severity of osteophytosis on the zygapophyseal joints. The chi-square test (SPSS 25.…
