Amblyopia is a condition of decreased monocular or binocular visual acuity caused by form deprivation or abnormal binocular interaction. Amblyopia is the most common cause of monocular vision loss in children with a prevalence of 2 to 5%. We describe two temporary diplopia cases secondary to local septal infiltration anesthesia during septoplasty operation. Both of the diplopia cases resolved without any treatment. Although diplopia was not refractory in our cases, when injecting anesthetics, special care must be taken to avoid injection either into the artery or to the vein.

Little is known about the systematic impact of blur on reading performance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of dioptric blur on reading performance in a group of normally sighted young adults. We measured monocular reading performance and visual acuity for 19 observers with normal vision, for five levels of optical blur (no-blur, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3D). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcome of Müller's muscle-conjunctival resection (MMCR) for correction of upper eyelid ptosis and to explore the relationship between phenylephrine testing, muscle resection, and surgical outcome.
METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for all patients who underwent MMCR at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, Los Angeles, California, from January 1, 1999, through June 30, 2005. INTRODUCTION: Instillation of cyclopentolate drops with their irritant effect is difficult for children to bear. The purpose of this study was to compare the tolerance and efficacy of cyclopentolate spray versus drops.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cycloplegic effect of cyclopentolate spray prepared and conditioned in the hospital was compared with drops in 62 eyes of 32 children consulting in our department. The nonparametric Wilcoxon test for paired data was used to assume there was no significant difference between the refractive measurements with spray or drops.

PURPOSE: To compare cycloplegic refractions to preoperative wavefront-derived refractions from three Hartmann-Shack-based wavefront devices.
METHODS: Ninety-nine eyes of 55 subjects were evaluated preoperatively using the LADARWave, WaveScan, and Zywave aberrometers. With cycloplegic refraction as the standard, the spherical equivalent refraction, sphere, and cylinder were compared to the wavefront-derived refractions using the three wavefront devices.

Ophthalmic surgeons often apply phenylephrine topically to effect pupillary dilatation. We describe a paediatric patient in whom cardiac arrhythmias, severe hypertension and pulmonary oedema occurred following intraoperative ocular phenylephrine administration. We believe that systemic absorption of the drug was responsible and discuss ways in which this might be reduced when ocular phenylephrine is used in this context.
