Carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency is one of the mitochondrial myopathies characterized by weakness, exercise intolerance, and myoglobinuria after prolonged exercise. This is the first case report concerning a pregnant woman with carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency that was also proved by the decrease of carnitine palmitoyl transferase activity in uterine myometrium biopsy.

UNLABELLED: A 5-year-old boy with late-onset very long-chain acyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (VLCAD) deficiency presented with acute cardiomyopathy, myopathy, gross myoglobinuria and normoglycaemia. The clinical course after diagnosis was favourable.
CONCLUSION: late-onset VLCAD deficiency may present as acute cardiomyopathy.

Fetal and neonatal asphyxia is the main cause of transient or acute renal failure (ARF) in neonates. Rhabdomyolysis and subsequent myoglobinuria have been rarely reported in neonates. We describe a case of ARF in a newborn infant in whom asphyxia, birth trauma and hypovolemic shock precipitated rhabdomyolysis which contributed to ARF.

A 36-year-old man presented with episodic exertional dyspnea, fluctuating exercise intolerance, and myoglobinuria. He never experienced cramps or myalgias. Subsequent evaluation revealed carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency. The unusual features of this case suggested that carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency may have a more diverse clinical picture than previously described.

A case of severe non-oliguric acute renal failure following cosmetic suction lipectomy in a 33 year old woman is described. The renal failure, although requiring emergency treatment, resolved spontaneously with only negligible residual impairment of renal function. An aetiology involving rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria is proposed and other mechanisms are discussed.

The effect of CAVDH was evaluated in a patient with rhabdomyolysis due to extreme low temperature and also to carbon monoxide poisoning. Since renal failure im myoglobinuria has a relatively good prognosis, we recommend in this case the use of a soft technique such as continuous arteriovenous hemofiltration with dialysis.

A case of acute muscle necrosis with probable myoglobinuria is presented. The patient had been taking excessive doses of phenformin and fenfluramine, and a toxic etiology is suggested. Muscle necrosis is tentatively attributed either to the combined effect of these drugs on some underlying biochemical abnormality of muscle or to a defect of oxygen utilization secondary to myoglobin alterations.

Exertional rhabdomyolysis is a condition arising in several species of newly captured wild animals after some form of physical exertion and stress. It is characterized by muscle necrosis and myoglobinuria. Death may result from secondary renal failure, acute or chronic heart failure and progressive emaciation.

Computed tomography scans were performed on two patients who presented with clinical rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria. Localized muscle swelling with patchy focal areas of low attenuation were demonstrated. Computed tomography may be helpful to clarify the nature and extent of the muscle injury in the appropriate medical setting.

Mutations of PYGM, the gene encoding human myophosphorylase, produce a metabolic myopathy characterised by exercise intolerance and, in some patients, myoglobinuria. To illustrate the clinical and laboratory features of myophosphorylase deficiency, we describe 10 patients diagnosed in Auckland, New Zealand, between 1989 and 2009. We review the clinical, biochemical, and histologic features and the results of mutation analysis. All patients reported exercise intolerance since childhood or the teenage years, starting within minutes of moderate or intense exertion. The "second wind" phenomenon, o…

Abstract Rhabdomyolysis caused by severe burn releases extracellular myoglobin (Mb) that accumulates in the kidney and urine (maximum [Mb] approximately 50 microM) (termed myoglobinuria). Extracellular Mb can be a pro-oxidant. This study cultured Madin-Darby-canine-kidney-Type-II (MDCK II) cells in the presence of Mb and tested whether supplementation with a synthetic tert-butyl-polyphenol (tert-butyl-bisphenol; t-BP) protects these renal cells from dysfunction. In the absence of t-BP, cells exposed to 0-100 microM Mb for 24 h showed a dose-dependent decrease in ATP and the total thiol (TSH) r…

A 15-year-old Chinese boy developed rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria and marked elevation of serum creatine phosphokinase following a prolonged and severe attack of asthma. He recovered after vigorous hydration and supportive treatment. Clinicians should be aware of this potentially fatal, albeit rare, complication of status asthmaticus.

An 8-year-old, spayed female Chihuahua mixed breed dog was presented for dyspnea and was subsequently mechanically ventilated. Propofol was utilized as part of the anesthetic protocol. The dog developed rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria, cardiac arrhythmias, liver enzyme elevation, and methemoglobinemia. Propofol was discontinued and N-acetylcysteine was administered after which the clinical signs resolved.

We report a unique presentation of X-linked recessive dystrophy as neonatal rhabdomyolysis. There was induration of the proximal musculature in an otherwise well neonate and striking CK elevation, without myoglobinuria. Muscle biopsy at age 1 year showed dystrophic alterations, and X chromosome analysis showed a deletion within or adjacent to the Duchenne/Becker locus.

In brief Prompt recognition and treatment of rhabdomyolysis may prevent further muscle damage and serious renal complications. The patient presented here, an unconditioned rugby player with moderately severe exertional rhabdomyolysis, had thigh pain, thigh and knee swelling, and myoglobinuria. His rehabilitation focused on a well-monitored, progressive exercise program after his muscle injury resolved.

The following abnormalities were observed during the first 24 hours of admission for 162 drug overdosage (OD) episodes in 152 patients: abnormal chest x-ray films; increased A-aO2 gradient; elevated white blood cell (WBC) counts; elevated serum enzyme levels; gross myoglobinuria; skin lesions suggestive of pressure necrosis; and abnormal electrocardiograms. Many sputum cultures were positive for single or multiple potentially pathogenic organisms. These correlations existed: all patients with OD duration of less than 12 hours were hyperthermic; as temperatures increased so did WBC counts; hype…

Rhabdomyolysis is defined as the breakdown of skeletal muscle leading to the release of muscle contents into the extracellular fluid. Patients with rhabdomyolysis can be asymptomatic or have myalgia symptoms, weakness, myoglobinuria with dark urine, significant electrolyte imbalance, and acute kidney injury. Here we describe a case on acute kidney injury associated to rhabdomyolysis in a patient with COVID-19.

A boy presenting for oesophagoscopy developed myoglobinuria during convalescence from the procedure. A susceptibility to malignant hyperpyerexia was considered in the differential diagnosis but was felt to be unlikely on the basis of in vitro testing of muscle biopsy specimens. A review of relevant papers suggests that rhabdomyolysis of significant degree following suxamethonium administration may be more common than generally appreciated, particularly in children.

Blood pressure, plasma N-acethyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) and the presence of myoglobinuria were serially determined. Blood pressure remained constant during the ischemic period but dropped by about 25% immediately after reperfusion. This was significantly attenuated by intraaortic administration of calpeptin. NAG gradually increased durin …
