A Retrospective Study of the Respiratory Rate Oxygenation and Respiratory Rate Oxygenation-Heart Rate Indexes in Predicting the Results of Conventional Oxygen Therapy in Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure.

BACKGROUND: Conventional oxygen therapy is a first-line treatment for acute respiratory failure, but accurately predicting which patients will require escalated respiratory support remains a critical clinical challenge. OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical significance of the respiratory rate oxygenation (ROX) and ROX-heart rate (ROX-HR) indexes in forecasting outcomes of standard oxygen therapy in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 262 ARF patients admitted to the emergency department between June 2021 and May 2023. Patients were categori

Development of a new ambulatory oxygen delivery method combining continuous oxygen flow and demand oxygen delivery system: A prospective, single-blind, randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although demand oxygen delivery system (DODS) prolongs ambulatory oxygen supply, the efficacy of preventing hypoxemia is likely to be lower than continuous oxygen flow (CF). We developed a new oxygen delivery method combining CF and DODS (CF + DODS). This study aimed in comparing the efficacy between conventional oxygen delivery methods and a new method during walking in patients with COPD. METHODS: We conducted three-treatment crossover study. Stable COPD patients performed three 6-min walk tests (6MWT) with different oxygen delivery methods in random order with CF,

Comparison of periglottic oxygen fraction, tracheal oxygen fraction and safe apnea time under different apneic oxygenation techniques: a randomised non-inferiority controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Apneic oxygenation prolongs safe apnea time and reduces hypoxemia risk during airway management. The primary objective of this study was to compare the safe apnea time among various techniques, while the secondary objective was to evaluate intergroup differences in periglottic and tracheal oxygen fractions (FgO₂ and FtO₂). METHODS: This randomized, non-inferiority trial enrolled 125 participants, assigned to five groups: modified nasopharyngeal airway with 10 L/min oxygen (Naso group), nasal cannula oxygenation at 2 L/min (L2 group), 5 L/min (L5 group), and 10 L/min (L10 group), a

Quantification of whole-brain oxygenation extraction fraction and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption in adults with sickle cell anemia using individual T2 -based oxygenation calibrations.

PURPOSE: To evaluate different T2 -oxygenation calibrations for estimating venous oxygenation in people with sickle cell anemia (SCA). METHODS: Blood T2 values were measured at 3 T in the internal jugular veins of 12 healthy volunteers and 11 SCA participants with no history of stroke, recent transfusion, or renal impairment. T2 -oxygenation relationships of both sickled and normal blood samples were calibrated individually and compared with values generated from published models. After converting venous T2 values to venous oxygenation, whole-brain oxygen extraction fraction and cerebral meta

Geant4-DNA Simulation of the Oxygen Depletion Coefficient and the Relative Change in OER in Proton-Irradiated Oxygenated Water.

FLASH radiotherapy delivers therapeutic doses at ultra-high dose rates and may reduce normal tissue injury while preserving tumor control, but its mechanisms remain unclear. Radiolytic oxygen depletion has been proposed as one contributor, yet the combined effects of initial oxygen conditions and the spatial distribution of protons on oxygen depletion remain insufficiently understood. Geant4-DNA was used to simulate water radiolysis induced by 100 MeV protons in oxygenated water. All primary protons were introduced simultaneously, representing an idealized limiting case of zero pulse duration.

Entropy-Driven Modulation of Lattice Oxygen Stabilization and Oxygen Activation for Durable and Efficient Volatile Organic Oxidation.

Achieving sustained activity without deactivation in metal oxide catalysts poses a critical challenge in volatile organic compounds abatement. Here, we introduce an entropy-increasing strategy to circumvent the inherent activity-stability trade-off by progressively incorporating thermodynamically diverse elements Zr, Mg, Co, Ni, and Mn into a CeO2 fluorite lattice to construct low-, medium-, and high-entropy oxides (LEO, MEO, and HEO). The optimized HEO affords 90% cyclohexane conversion at a markedly low 274 °C, alongside outstanding stability during both a 48 h accelerated aging test and a 1

Smaller Oxygen Nanobubbles More Effectively Suppress Colitis and Colon Carcinogenesis than Larger Oxygen Nanobubbles.

Oxygen nanobubble (NBO2) water is reportedly a promising therapeutic and radiosensitizing agent against solid cancers. However, the significance of nanobubble size in inflammation-associated colorectal carcinogenesis in vivo remains elusive. We investigated whether small NBO2 water exerts stronger preventive effects against colitis and colorectal carcinogenesis in an azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium-induced mouse model of colitis-associated cancer. Differences in particle size between the small and large NBO2 water samples were confirmed by atomic force microscopy. The mice received drinkin

Molecular oxygen-enabled photocatalyzed oxygenative coupling via C-H functionalization: advances and mechanistic insights.

Visible-light photoredox catalysis has emerged as a powerful platform for the activation and functionalization of inherently inert C-H bonds, enabling synthetically valuable transformations under mild, sustainable, and operationally simple conditions. Among the oxidants employed in these processes, molecular oxygen holds particular significance owing to its abundance, low cost, and dual function as both a terminal oxidant and an oxygen atom source. This perspective provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of recent advancements in oxygen-enabled photocatalytic C-H functionalization, with

Oxygen exposure and diffusion are key formulation barriers in the microencapsulation of extremely oxygen-sensitive next-generation probiotics.

Extremely oxygen-sensitive (EOS) next-generation probiotics are increasingly recognised as promising microbial biotherapeutics; however, their strict intolerance to oxygen poses major challenges for formulation and long-term stability as oral therapies. Many established bioencapsulation approaches, including prilling-based microencapsulation, were developed for the controlled delivery of aerotolerant probiotic strains, and such methods may be unsuitable for these next-generation EOS organisms. This study systematically evaluated whether prilling-based hydrogel bioencapsulation, a platform conv

Personalized Oxygen Saturation Targets Compared to the Oxygen Saturation Experienced in Care Among Mechanically Ventilated Adults.

RATIONALE: For critically ill adults receiving invasive mechanical ventilation, randomized trials have found no significant average treatment effect of a higher (96-100%) versus lower (88-92%) peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) target. The effect of SpO2 targets on outcomes, however, may differ for patients with different characteristics. Machine learning methods have been used recently to derive and validate a statistical model capable of predicting which SpO2 target will result in lower mortality for an individual patient, as a personalized SpO2 target. Personalized targets can only improve

Nitric oxide in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Sweep Gas Promotes Oxygenator Longevity: A Technical Case Report.

In the accompanying article in this issue, we reported the survival of a 4 month old infant with severe necrotizing pneumonia due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), resulting in cardiogenic shock and respiratory failure, who required a total of 233 days of extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) support. In this article, we report the function of the ECMO membrane (oxygenator). To preserve oxygenator function, nitric oxide was added to the ECMO sweep gas (sNO). Despite prolonged ECMO support, a single membrane lung functioned effectiv

Construction of an Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich CeO2@CoO Heterojunction toward High-Performance Lithium-Oxygen Batteries.

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries theoretically possess an exceptional energy density comparable to gasoline (up to 3500 W h kg-1), but in practical applications, the discharge products are difficult to effectively decompose, which leads to clogging of the cathode, resulting in severe polarization, limited actual capacity, and shortened battery life for Li-O2 batteries. Herein, we construct a highly active and stable catalyst with d-f electronic orbit coupling as a redox center by anchoring CeO2 onto CoO, simultaneously, oxygen vacancy (Ov) and CeO2 coactivated CoO. By leveraging the effects of

Evaluation of the impact of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) oxygenator shunt flow on neonatal hemolysis: An in vitro study.

IntroductionExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is utilized in critically ill neonates with severe cardiopulmonary failure. Hemolysis is a potential complication and is associated with significantly increased morbidity and mortality. The etiology of hemolysis in neonates is multifactorial, including shear forces generated by the ECMO pump, higher flow resistance from smaller tubing and smaller cannulas, the oxygenator, and other patient factors. Centrifugal pumps and oxygenators commonly have shunts with partially occluding clamps to regulate blood flow. We hypothesized that these clamp…

Non-invasive, Continuous Venous Oxygen Saturation and Oxygen Extraction Estimation from the Internal Jugular Vein.

Venous blood oxygen saturation (SvO2) measurements are critical for monitoring oxygen use. Currently, accurate SvO2 measurement requires invasive blood sampling. Conventional peripheral pulse oximetry techniques cannot measure SvO2 because peripheral veins are not pulsatile. This study explores the potential for non-invasive SvO2 estimation using internal jugular vein (IJV) pulsations detected by a flexible sensor array, to thus exploit standard pulse oximetry. A prototype sensor was developed to detect pulsatile signals from the carotid artery and IJV on the right-hand side of the neck. The s

Tailoring CuFeOx-Based Catalytic Oxygen Carrier for Lattice Oxygen-Induced Oxidative Steam Reforming of Methanol.

Methanol reforming demonstrates the possibility of realizing hydrogen storage, transport, and on-site supply. Nevertheless, this approach faces limitations due to outlet CO generation and catalyst degradation. This work fabricates a series of CuFeOx-based catalytic oxygen carriers (COC) with various Cu-to-Fe ratios for lattice oxygen-induced methanol reforming, which goes through lattice oxygen-induced methanol reforming  →  catalytic steam methanol reforming → oxidative steam methanol reforming. It is revealed that the lattice oxygen mobility can be tuned by modulating the Cu-to-Fe mole ratio

Single yttrium atom coordinated by nitrogen and oxygen with an asymmetric 4d orbit as efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst.

Developing transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (MNC) with the inert metal-atom center for the Fenton reaction is crucial to achieving precious metal-free electrocatalysis of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we report a new structure of YNC nanosheets for efficient ORR, which was synthesized by pyrolyzing the Y ion-containing self-polymerized compound of 2, 4, 6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP) as a new precursor. Results demonstrate that the precursor of TAP with high N content is capable of forming atomically dispersed specific YN4O moieties anchoring in N-rich carbon nanosheets, exhibiting exce

Nanozyme-Reinforced Hydrogel Spray as a Reactive Oxygen Species-Driven Oxygenator to Accelerate Diabetic Wound Healing.

The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and poor oxygen supply are two prominent factors of the inflammatory microenvironment that delay diabetic wound healing. However, current clinical treatments cannot achieve effective ROS scavenging and sustained oxygenation. Herein, a ROS-driven oxygenation hydrogel (OxyGel) spray that integrates a multifunctional nanozyme with a dynamically crosslinked sprayable hydrogel matrix is presented. The nanozyme, which is fabricated based on the ceria-zoledronic acid nanoparticles modified with tannic acid (TCZ nanozymes), can mimic the cascade cataly
