BACKGROUND: Pes cavus can be defined as an abnormal elevation of the longitudinal arches, which is often secondary to a muscle imbalance. This deformity affects the foot's three dimensions (3D) and our osteotomies are usually planned on a lateral (two-dimension) X-ray. Are we really considering all the spatial components of the deformity? The aim of this study is to present a technique tip to identify the apical plane of the pes cavus deformity and perform a midfoot dorsal-based wedge resection osteotomy by using customized 3D printed surgical guides.
METHODS: Three patients underwent the pre

A high longitudinal plantar arch, varus position of the heel, forefoot equinus, and pronation of the first ray are characteristic of a cavovarus deformity. Forefoot-driven and hindfoot-driven deformities are distinguished based on pathomechanics. In first ray strong plantarflexion, the forefoot touches the ground first. This leads to compensatory varus heel, lock of the midfoot, reduction of the flexible phase, and decrease in shock absorption. In hindfoot-driven cavovarus deformity, the subtalar joint may compensate for varus deformities above the ankle joint. Overload of the lateral soft tis

A child with mental retardation and multiple congenital abnormalities, including brachycephaly, an unusual facies, brachydactyly, clinodactyly and bilateral talipes valgus, was found to have a small interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 17. The clinical features and cytogenetic observations are compared with those in previously reported cases.

Congenital hallux varus is uncommon as an isolated deformity. Many authors cite this deformity in conjunction with metatarsus varus or talipes equino varus deformities. An unusual case of bilateral congenital hallux varus is presented in a 9-month-old. A review of etiologies and treatment methods are given.

We report on talipes equinus as a consequence of chronical venous insufficiency, stage IV, and the therapeutic approaches. We describe in detail the autogenous mobilization of the proximal ankle joint. Regular measurements of the degree of ankylosis can objectify the findings, control the course of therapy, and motivate the patients.

In talipes equino-varus the diminished bulk of the calf muscle suggests a neuromuscular defect. Accordingly, biopsies were taken from the postero-medial and peroneal muscle groups, and occasionally from abductor hallucis, in sixty patients mostly under the age of five years; 111 were studied histochemically and histologically, and a further fifty-three by electron-microscopy. Histochemical anomalies were revealed in ninety-two specimens; the muscle fibres in the other nineteen varied in size but were abnormal at the ultramicroscopic level, as were all specimens examined with the electron micro…

The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the effects of selected polydimethylsiloxanes on reproduction and fetal development in rats and rabbits and to determine the mutagenic potential of one such material in mice. In two separate three-phase studies in rats and rabbits with a 350 centistoke medical grade fluid, the only significant effect noted was an apparent dose-related incidence of in utero mortality at dose levels of 200 and 1,000 mg/kg sc in rats in one study. No evidence of fetotoxicity was obtained in the second study at the same dose levels. The incidence of talipes varus at a s…

Purpose. Mental retardation, mild to severe epilepsy and cerebral palsy often of hemiplegic type are common accompaniments in patients with agenesis/hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. Skeletal deformities of bilateral radiohumeral synostosis, brachydactyly, bilateral elbow dislocation, talipes equinovarus, and juxtacalcaneal accessory bones have been encountered in two unrelated children with agenesis of the corpus callosum. Methods. We report on two unrelated children who presented with the full clinical criteria of agenesis of the corpus callosum. Strikingly, both presented with variable upp…

Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation type Ig (ALG12-CDG) is part of a group of autosomal recessive conditions caused by deficiency of proteins involved in the assembly of dolichol-oligosaccharides used for protein N-glycosylation. In ALG12-CDG, the enzyme affected is encoded by the ALG12 gene. Affected individuals present clinically with neurodevelopmental delay, growth retardation, immune deficiency, male genital hypoplasia, and cardiomyopathy. A total of six individuals have been reported in the literature. Here, we present an infant with rhizomelic short stature, talipes equinovarus, platys…

A male child is described with bilateral talipes equinovarus, absent fibulae with bowing and shortening of the tibiae and facial dysmorphic features. His mother was on a daily dose of 2000 mg sodium valproate for convulsions. This case raises the possibility that postaxial limb defects might be caused by intrauterine valproate exposure.

All children of a mother with multiple sclerosis (MS) had increasing grades of congenital joint contractures without demonstrable neuromuscular disease. Two had talipes equinovarus, one had congenital hip subluxation, and the youngest had arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Maternal MS may be causally related to the development of congenital joint contractures.

Triple arthrodesis is valuable in the stabilization and correction of foot deformity resulting from postcalcaneal fracture, talipes equinovarus, and neurological deficits. This manuscript summarizes the literature related to the complications of delayed union, hypermobility, and arthrosis following triple arthrodesis. A comparison of the outcome of specific rearfoot fusions is also presented.

Relapsed congenital talipes equinovarus is difficult to assess and treat. Pedobarography provides dynamic measurement of the pressures under the foot, and may be used in the assessment of these patients both before and after operation. Our findings showed a statistically significant difference in the distribution of pressure across the foot after treatment by the Ilizarov technique.

UNLABELLED: Minimally invasive subtalar screw-arthroereisis has gained interest in the correction of flat feet in children. Between 1990 and 2004, this technique was used on 152 children, 74 bilaterally, for a total of 226 feet. There were 82 boys and 70 girls, with an average age of 10.6+/-1.9 years. The results were good in 95.4% of cases, whilst there were complications in 4.6%. For well corrected feet, 55 screws have now been removed, on average 2.9 years after implantation. The indications for such treatment are: talipes calcaneovalgus, which develops into a flat foot (spontaneous correct…
