Polydopamine-Modified PCL/β-TCP Bioprinting Scaffolds for Bone Regeneration and Infection Control.

Bone defects, especially those complicated by infections, pose significant challenges in orthopedic surgery due to their complex healing requirements. This study aimed to develop and evaluate polydopamine (PDA)-modified polycaprolactone/β-tricalcium phosphate (PCL/β-TCP) scaffolds fabricated using 3D printing technology for their osteogenic and antibacterial efficacy. PDA was incorporated at varying concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5%) to enhance the scaffolds' drug-loading capacity and antibacterial properties through vancomycin integration. The scaffolds demonstrated excellent biocompatibility, a

Biomechanical and clinical outcomes of 3D-printed versus modular hemipelvic prostheses for limb-salvage reconstruction following periacetabular tumor resection: a mid-term retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Debates persist over optimal pelvic girdle reconstruction after acetabular tumor resection, with surgeons grappling between modular and 3D-printed hemipelvic endoprostheses. We hypothesize superior outcomes with 3D-printed versions, yet scarce comparative research exists. This study fills the gap, examining biomechanics and clinical results retrospectively. METHODS: From February 2017 to June 2021, we retrospectively assessed 32 patients undergoing en bloc resection for malignant periacetabular tumors at a single institution. PRIMARY OUTCOME: limb function. SECONDARY OUTCOMES: i

Reconstructing Critical-Sized Mandibular Defects in a Rabbit Model: Enhancing Angiogenesis and Facilitating Bone Regeneration via a Cell-Loaded 3D-Printed Hydrogel-Ceramic Scaffold Application.

In this study, we propose a spatially patterned 3D-printed nanohydroxyapatite (nHA)/beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/collagen composite scaffold incorporating human dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hDP-MSCs) for bone regeneration in critical-sized defects. We investigated angiogenesis and osteogenesis in a rabbit critical-sized mandibular defect model treated with this engineered construct. The critical and synergistic role of collagen coating and incorporation of stem cells in the regeneration process was confirmed by including a cell-free uncoated 3D-printed nHA/β-TCP scaffold, a

Assessing the Impact of Cardiac Output and Valve Orientation on Bioprosthetic Pulmonary Valve Hemodynamics Using In Vitro 4D-Flow MRI and High-Speed Imaging.

PURPOSE: Pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) using bioprosthetic valves is a common procedure performed in patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot and other conditions, but these valves frequently become dysfunctional within 15 years of implantation. The causes for early valve failure are not clearly understood. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of changing cardiac output (CO) and valve orientation on local hemodynamics and valve performance. METHODS: A 25 mm bioprosthetic valve was implanted in an idealized 3D-printed model of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT). Th

Drug response analysis for scaffold-free cardiac constructs fabricated using bio-3D printer.

Cardiac constructs fabricated using human induced pluripotent stem cells-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSCs-CMs) are useful for evaluating the cardiotoxicity of and cardiac response to new drugs. Previously, we fabricated scaffold-free three-dimensional (3D) tubular cardiac constructs using a bio-3D printer, which can load cardiac spheroids onto a needle array. In this study, we developed a method to measure the contractile force and to evaluate the drug response in cardiac constructs. Specifically, we measured the movement of the needle tip upon contraction of the cardiac constructs on the needle

Biofabrication for osteochondral tissue regeneration: bioink printability requirements.

Biofabrication allows the formation of 3D scaffolds through a precise spatial control. This is of foremost importance when aiming to mimic heterogeneous and anisotropic architecture, such as that of the osteochondral tissue. Osteochondral defects are a supreme challenge for tissue engineering due to the compositional and structural complexity of stratified architecture and contrasting biomechanical properties of the cartilage-bone interface. This review highlights the advancements and retreats witnessed by using developed bioinks for tissue regeneration, taking osteochondral tissue as a challe

In Vitro Mimetic Models for the Bone-Cartilage Interface Regeneration.

In embryonic development, pure cartilage structures are in the basis of bone-cartilage interfaces. Despite this fact, the mature bone and cartilage structures can vary greatly in composition and function. Nevertheless, they collaborate in the osteochondral region to create a smooth transition zone that supports the movements and forces resulting from the daily activities. In this sense, all the hierarchical organization is involved in the maintenance and reestablishment of the equilibrium in case of damage. Therefore, this interface has attracted a great deal of interest in order to understand

Utility of 3D printed temporal bones in pre-surgical planning for complex BoneBridge cases.

With the advent of single-sided hearing loss increasingly being treated with cochlear implantation, bone conduction implants are reserved for cases of conductive and mixed hearing loss with greater complexity. The BoneBridge (BB, MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria) is an active fully implantable device with no attenuation of sound energy through soft tissue. However, the floating mass transducer (FMT) part of the device is very bulky, which limits insertion in complicated ears. In this study, 3D printed temporal bones of patients were used to study its utility in preoperative planning on complicated c

Direct Laser Writing of Ferromagnetic Nickel Utilizing the Principle of Sensitized Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion.

Direct laser writing of ferromagnetic microstructures is of great interest for sensing and data storage in compact three-dimensional architectures. However, reliable direct laser writing of metallic, and even more so ferromagnetic, materials remains a major challenge. Here, we discuss a developed photoresist suitable to direct laser write ferromagnetic nickel based on sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion. By combining an in situ photochemical deoxygenation process with a sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion process and photoreduction of Ni2+ ions, the deposition

Wide-field reflective imaging with an epi-illumination multi-camera array microscope.

We present an epi-illumination multi-camera array microscope (epi-MCAM) designed for wide-field reflective imaging of non-transparent samples. The epi-MCAM contains 24 tightly packed and synchronized epi-illumination microscope units, arranged in a 4 × 6 planar array at 18 mm spacing. Each unit contains a unique CMOS image sensor (13 megapixels each), an objective and tube lens pair, and a beamsplitter and epi-illumination light path. An epi-MCAM capture cycle produces a stitched image covering 72 × 108 mm2 at a micrometer scale resolution down to 2.46 μm. To image samples exceeding this nativ

Video frame interpolation neural network for 3D tomography across different length scales.

Three-dimensional (3D) tomography is a powerful investigative tool for many scientific domains, going from materials science, to engineering, to medicine. Many factors may limit the 3D resolution, often spatially anisotropic, compromising the precision of the information retrievable. A neural network, designed for video-frame interpolation, is employed to enhance tomographic images, achieving cubic-voxel resolution. The method is applied to distinct domains: the investigation of the morphology of printed graphene nanosheets networks, obtained via focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (

Patient-specific commissural alignment for ACURATE neo2 implantation in degenerated surgical bioprostheses.

Valve-in-valve TAVI to treat failing surgical aortic valves (SAVs) is increasingly performed, and commissural alignment is a key technical aspect in such procedures. Surgeons optimize valve alignment, accounting for potential coronary eccentricity and achieving a patient-specific optimized commissural orientation, representing the ideal target for TAVI alignment. Therefore, here we present a dedicated stepwise valve-in-valve implantation technique using the ACURATE neo2. In a specific SAV postoverlap view, isolating one surgical post to the right of the screen representing the target for align
