Results of Imhauser osteotomy for treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis grade II and III performed in 32 patients (33 hips) are presented. The average correction of the slip angle was 39.7 +/- 14.9 degrees. Excellent results were found in 16 hips (48.5%), good in 10 (30.3%), fair in 5 hips (15.1%) and poor results in 2 hips (6.1%). No head-neck fixation after osteotomy did not lead to further slippage and decreased the risk of other complications. In 6 hips (18.2%) chondrolysis occurred. In one case prolonged immobilization of the hip was to blame, perforation of the femoral head in a

The association of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is described in a girl aged 9 years and 10 months. SCFE has never been reported associated with RTS, neither as an isolated anomaly, nor in a familial pedigree. However, a "stiff gait" is frequently described in RTS patients and, furthermore, obesity is a frequent feature of RTS patients. Some reports in the literature suggest the need for an early diagnosis of SCFE among adolescent relatives of patients with SCFE. Since many SCFEs are asymptomatic and an early diagnosis is essential for a favorable

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is an unusual disorder in which the epiphysis of the proximal femur slips through the growth plate in a posterior direction. Significant derangement of hip function results and can be accompanied by two complications: avascular necrosis and chondrolysis. The cause remains elusive although many theories have been advanced. This article provides an overview of the disease process, diagnostic guidelines, and current treatment considerations. A case study is included.

A difficult delivery of a newborn infant may result in a traumatic separation of the proximal humeral epiphysis from the metaphysis through the physis. When the ossification center of the epiphysis is not yet visible radiographically, the correct diagnosis may be missed and the injury may be mistaken for a dislocation or Erb palsy. As a non-invasive diagnostic method, ultrasonography has proved to be a particularly valuable diagnostic tool.

A simple method is described for pinning of slipped capital femoral epiphysis with a stationary x-ray machine and the limb draped free. The leg is "frogged" for a lateral view, and positioned under radiographic control to avoid pin penetration into the joint.

The several anatomic features that permit the growth plate to resist shear forces were identified. Specific variations in these anatomic features were correlated with pathologic factors known to be associated with epiphysiolysis, including clinical correlations with slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Two models of epiphysiolysis representing different pathogenetic pathways were established in the pig and compared to clinical slipped capital femoral epiphysis in the human. Both experimental models and other models reported in the literature bear similarities mechanically and histologically to t

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to assess the posterior inclination of the contralateral femoral epiphysis in patients with unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
METHODS: The posterior sloping angle (PSA) was measured using lateral radiographs in 67 patients with a unilateral SCFE and in 41 age-matched normal controls. A symptomatic epiphyseal slip was defined as the development of SCFE.
RESULTS: The contralateral PSA in SCFE patients was more widely distributed and significantly larger compared to controls (15.0° vs. 9.0°, p < 0.0001). Forty-seven hips (70.1%) had a PSA of

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common hip pathology occurring in pediatrics and adolescents, and its management is well documented in the literature regardless of its severity. In patients presenting with unilateral SCFE, the incidence of subsequent contralateral slip (SCS) is variable among studies, and the issue of contralateral hip prophylactic fixation (CHPF) becomes a concern. The fundamental rationale behind performing CHPF is to avoid the subsequent contralateral slip, which consequently lowers the risk of femoral head avascular necrosis and chondrolysis. However, prophyl

The purpose of this study was to quantify three-dimensional translational and angular deformity (defined as theta) present at the proximal femoral physis in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), and to use theta to differentiate between SCFE hips, contralateral unaffected hips, and normal hips by comparing to the current gold standard measure of the Southwick slip angle (SSA). 3DCT reconstructions of the pelvis and femur in SCFE patients and normal adolescents were obtained and pelvic position was standardized. The center point and direction vector of the femoral epiphysis was determined.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the early and middle-term results of in situ single screw fixation and subtrochanteric osteotomy of the femur with external fixator for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
METHODS: From June 1998 to July 2008, 11 patients (seven male [eight hips] and four female [four hips]) of average age 14.3 years (range, 9-18 years) were treated in our hospital. According to the Southwick measurement, seven hips were mildly affected (<30°), two moderately (30-50°), and three severely (>50°). The average body mass index (BMI) was 31.1 g/m(2) (range, 27-35 g/m(2) ). All the mild
