OBJECTIVE: To determine whether bilateral arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) transection creates symmetrical osteoarthritis (OA) in canine knees.
METHODS: Six dogs underwent bilateral arthroscopic ACL transections. The animals were sacrificed at intervals ranging from 2 to 12 months post ACL transection. Both knees in each animal were assessed for gross pathology, histology, and biochemistry.

Management of obstructions in the lacrimal drainage system would be greatly aided by improvements in the ability to visualize the blockages. We describe a new method of observation using miniature fiberoptics to view the entire lacrimal excretory system. We employed flexible endoscopes of fiberoptic bundles with outside diameters of from 0.5 to 0.7 mm. These endoscopes were inserted through the puncta and canaliculi. Sixteen patients were examined. Results are reported of endoscopic treatment of: 236 patients with common bile duct calculi treated by endoscopic sphincterotomy with or without hydrostatic balloon extraction and extraction of the calculi, mechanical lithotripsy and endoprosthesis; preliminary results in 12 patients treated by intracorporeal electrohydraulic lithotripsy. The article analyzes an experience with treatment of 18 children with the Mallory-Weiss syndrome. Six children were operated upon, one of them died. Questions of pathogenesis of this syndrome in children practice are considered on the basis of anatomo-physiological properties of the child's organism. Attention was paid to the diagnostic and medical role of endoscopy. The tactics of treatment of this disease is recommended based on reference of the blood loss degree and findings of the endoscopic examination.

We studied 8 adult patients with variable symptoms of cough, dyspnea, stridor, wheezing, or hemoptysis. Posterior epistaxis differs from anterior epistaxis only by its position in the nose, which makes direct access to the bleeding vessel difficult. With the aid of a flexible nasopharyngoscope, however, the bleeding point may be identified and cauterized directly. Hospital records were reviewed on 78 consecutive patients (33 homosexuals, 37 Haitians and 8 IV drug abusers) who had AIDS and who underwent fiberoptic bronchoscopy over a two year period. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) was the most common bronchoscopic finding (53.8% of patients) followed by tuberculosis (14.1%), cytomegalovirus infection (12.8%) and atypical mycobacteriosis (3.8%). Pancreatography using fibroscopy is current practice in medicine and contributes to the diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas. The radiographic images obtained generally represent oblique projections which have little in common with classic anatomical diagrams. We performed argon and krypton laser photocoagulation of the retina and ciliary body on rabbit and monkey eyes using an exolaser probe. Clinically, transscleral retinal lesions produced a white circumscribed reaction. Histologically, we observed necrosis of the retina and choroid. Bacteremia and meningitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae developed in a 52-year-old man 28 hours after an otherwise uncomplicated fiberoptic bronchoscopy. The patient responded to antimicrobial therapy and supportive care and later underwent pneumonectomy for carcinoma. This report reinforces previous observations that bacteremia may occasionally be associated with the performance of fiberoptic bronchoscopy.
