A 78-year-old man with a traumatic giant retinal tear and phacodonesis had 3-port pars plana vitrectomy (3PPPV), lensectomy, and sutured posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Two years after surgery, a filtration bleb was noted at 1 of the suture sites. In another case, a 32-year-old man with lens subluxation secondary to Marfan's syndrome had 3PPPV, lensectomy, and sutured posterior chamber IOL implantation. Two months after surgery, a filtration bleb was noted at 1 of the suture sites. Sutured posterior chamber IOL implantation is 1 of the few instances in which there is vir…

We describe a case of hypotony maculopathy in which hypotony was due to a cyclodialysis cleft produced by an elastic cord injury. Sixteen months after being hit with an elastic cord, a 43-year-old white male presented with progressive loss of vision in the right eye. The visual acuity in the right eye was 1/200 due, in part, to a subluxated and cataractous lens. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was 4 mm Hg. Gonioscopy revealed a cyclodialysis cleft at the 2 o'clock position, and fundus examination showed hypotony maculopathy. The patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy, pars plana lensectomy, re

UNLABELLED: PES has been associated with weakness of zonular attachments to the ciliary body and with late dislocation of the IOL following cataract extraction with in-the-bag IOL implantation. We evaluated the frequency of PES in patients with IOL dislocation following phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of five patients who had undergone phacoemulsification, followed by implantation of a posterior chamber IOL in the capsular bag during the years 1992 through 1996 and who showed IOL dislocation during follow-up. We looked for cl

BACKGROUND: Ectopia lentis in the pediatric population poses significant surgical challenges given the need for long-term optical rehabilitation. This study evaluated the feasibility and clinical outcomes of lensectomy combined with scleral-sutured intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric patients with genetic ectopia lentis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of pediatric patients with atraumatic (sub)luxation of the crystalline lens who underwent lensectomy, anterior vitrectomy, and scleral-fixated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) IOL implantation in the sulcus. Outcome measur

Bilateral spherophakia is a rare congenital condition, typically associated with syndromic disorders where distinctive features facilitate early recognition. Isolated cases without systemic involvement are often underdiagnosed and identified following angle-closure glaucoma or crystalline lens (CL) subluxation. In spherophakia, the CL adopts a spherical shape due to defective zonular fibers, inducing lenticular myopia. We report the case of a six-year-old boy presenting with short stature, high myopia, and bilateral low vision, initially misdiagnosed. A progressive myopic shift of -0.50 D ever

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the surgical techniques and therapeutic effects of phacofragmentation of the dislocated lens in the vitreous cavity.
METHODS: Phacofragmentation was performed on 23 eyes of 23 patients with dislocated lens or subluxated lens in the vitreous cavity. With high suction and moderate ultrasound, the nucleus could be emulsified. Energy and time of emulsification: 50%-60% of energy was set up and emulsification spent 43 s to 3 min 23 s (mean 1 min 57 s). The pressure of maximum vacuum aspiration was 110-120 mm Hg (1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa). In 11 eyes, anterior chamber intraocular l

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant disorder of connective tissue, while Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) is a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder (CCDD) which can be transmitted as autosomal dominant disorder in 5-10% of patients. In this paper, we present an 8-year-old girl who presented with left eye DRS and bilateral subluxation of the lens associated with MFS in absence of familial involvement. To our knowledge this is the first case report of DRS with MFS. The occurrence of these syndromes together is very rare and appears to be coincidental.

Ocular injuries suffered by 38 hockey players during a three-year period were studied. The severity of the injuries required hospitalization for 16 of the patients. Twelve players require follow-up care for possible late complications from the following conditions: angle recession (seven cases), subluxated lens (three cases), traumatic cataract (three cases), detachment of the retina (two cases), and enucleation (one case). The use of a full-face protective mask affixed to an adequate helmet is recommended for all hockey players.

BACKGROUND: Ozurdex is a 700 mcg dexamethasone intravitreal implant, approved for the management of macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion, and other related pathoglogiesAnterior chamber dislocation of Ozurdex represents an uncommon complication of the intravitreal injection, which can be managed by repositioning the implant into the vitreous cavity. We describe the case of a successful repositioning of an Ozurdex implant by mobilization and subsequent balanced saline solution injection in the anterior chamber.

PURPOSE: Primary lens luxation (PLL) in dogs is an inherited disease in which the lens is displaced from its normal position. A truncating mutation in the ADAMTS17 orthologue on CFA03 is reported to cause PLL in several breeds, mostly terriers. However, the complex inheritance pattern of PLL in miniature bull terriers (MBTs) suggests that other loci may have a modifying effect on the ADAMTS17 mutation. This study aimed to detect such loci increasing risk of PLL in Australian MBTs.
METHODS: More than 170,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the canine genome were genotyped in 23 P

This paper reports a case of a 57-year old female who had sustained a blunt ocular trauma resulting in anterior dislocation of the crystalline lens and acute painful visual loss in the left eye. The patient was managed with anterior chamber intracapsular phacoemulsification through a small anterior capsulotomy, pars plana vitrectomy, and surgical iridotomy. Aphakia was corrected by a contact lens. Two months after the surgery, the best corrected visual acuity was 0.9 in the left eye. The vision and retina remained stable in her follow-up examination 1 year later. Anterior dislocation of the cr
