Decimeter-length elastic organic crystals capable of mechanical post-processing and optical waveguide modulation at 77 K.

The development of decimeter-length organic crystals that remain elastic, functional, and machinable at extremely low temperatures, such as in liquid nitrogen (LN) environments, is a great challenge. Here, we report two novel elastic organic crystals, 1 and 2, derived from mono-benzene compounds. Crystals 1 are elastically bendable with decimeter-scale length (>10 cm) and exhibit better elastic bending ability at LN temperature compared to room temperature. In contrast, centimeter-length crystals 2 show reduced elasticity at LN temperature. Notably, crystals 1 can be cut and stripped at LN tem

Increased extent of object-selective cortex in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia patients exhibit deficits in various stages of visual information processing. Despite recent informative efforts to examine visual processing in schizophrenia with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), much remains unknown about the basic function, structure, and organization of key early visual processing areas in schizophrenia. This study examined magnitude and topography of regional brain activity in three early visual processing areas: early retinotopically organized areas (V1-V4), motion-sensitive areas (human area MT, hMT+), and object-recognition areas (lateral occ

Automated long axial field of view PET image processing and kinetic modelling with the TurBO toolbox.

PURPOSE: Long axial field of view (LAFOV) PET imaging requires extensive automation due to the large number of target tissues. Therefore, we introduce an open-source analysis pipeline (TurBO, Turku total-BOdy) for automated preprocessing and kinetic modelling of LAFOV [15O]H2O and [18F]FDG PET data. TurBO enables efficient, reproducible quantification of tissue perfusion and metabolism at regional- and voxel-levels through automated co-registration, motion correction, CT-based region of interest (ROI) segmentation, image-derived input function (IDIF) extraction, and region-specific kinetic mod

Transition of Online Adaptive Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer From Magnetic Resonance-Guided Linear Accelerator (MR-Linac) to State-of-the-Art Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most challenging tumor sites to treat safely and effectively with radiotherapy due to the anatomical location and aggressiveness of the disease. One modality that has shown promising results, which our institution has been employing, is online adaptive stereotactic radiotherapy using a magnetic resonance-guided linear accelerator (MR-linac). However, due to unforeseen circumstances regarding our MR-linac, it was necessary for our institution to use an alternative treatment technique. In this case report, we describe our experience using our ring-gantry linac equ

A New Hypothesis on the Frequency Discrimination of the Cochlea.

OBJECTIVE: Medial olivocochlear efferent (MOCE) neurons innervate outer hair cells (OHCs) of the cochlea, which in turn leads to basilar membrane motion. We hypothesized that MOCE-induced alterations in basilar membrane motion, independent of traveling waves, is responsible for the cochlear frequency discrimination of sound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven guinea pigs underwent bilateral otoscopic and audiologic evaluations under general anesthesia. The study comprised two parts. Part I (n=11) included spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) recordings with or without contralateral pure-tone ac

Workflow and dosimetric results for direct-to-unit single-fraction adaptive lung SBRT delivered on the ONE-STOP prospective pilot clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Direct-to-unit (DTU) workflows coupled with online adaptive radiation therapy can streamline stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) by eliminating conventional simulation and prolonged treatment planning, thereby reducing treatment burden while maintaining high dosimetric quality. AIM: To evaluate the feasibility and dosimetric robustness of a CBCT-guided DTU workflow for single-fraction lung SBRT. METHODS: Patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer or oligometastatic lung disease were enrolled in this prospective pilot clinical trial. Patients received single-fract

Empirical planning target volume modeling for high precision MRI guided intracranial radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance image-guided radiotherapy for intracranial indications is a promising advance; however, uncertainties remain for both target localization after translation-only MR setup and intrafraction motion. This investigation quantified these uncertainties and developed a population-based planning target volume (PTV) model to explore target and organ-at-risk (OAR) volumetric coverage tradeoffs. METHODS: Sixty-six patients, 49 with a primary brain tumor and 17 with a post-surgical resection cavity, treated on a 1.5T-based MR-linac across 1329 fractions were included. At each f

Area postrema lesions in rats enhance the magnitude of body rotation-induced conditioned taste aversions.

The role of the area postrema, a circumventricular organ located on the dorsal medulla in the fourth ventricle, in body rotation-induced conditioned taste aversions was examined in male hooded rats. One group of rats received lesions of the area postrema, another group was given sham lesions, and two other groups received no surgery. Three groups of rats, those with area postrema lesions, those with sham lesions, and one unoperated group, were given pairings of 1-hr access to a 0.1% sodium saccharin solution with 30 min of body rotation at 70 rpm (on a schedule of 15-sec on--5-sec off). Severe Symptomatic Anemia in Gastrointestinal Tract Sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology with the potential to involve many organs of the body. Less than 1% of patients with sarcoidosis have GI manifestations. Here, we report a case of GI tract sarcoidosis that presented with severe symptomatic anemia. A 51-year-old female with a history of pulmonary and liver sarcoidosis presented to the emergency room with a one-week history of chest pain and shortness of breath. A physical exam was significant for conjunctival pallor. On admission, her hemoglobin was 6.9 g/dL. Her iron studies showed anemia of chronic disease.

Systemic calcitonin gene-related peptide modifies auditory and vestibular end organ electrical potentials, and increases sensory hypersensitivities.

Migraine is a severe and chronic neurological disorder that affects ∼18% of people worldwide, the majority being female (3:1). It is characterized by recurrent, debilitating headaches and heightened sensory sensitivities. People with migraine may develop vestibular migraine (VM), characterized by a heightened motion sensitivity and preponderance for spontaneous vertigo attacks and balance problems such as postural instability. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is implicated in migraine and is believed to act on brain meninges or in subcortical central nervous system (CNS) structures, and

Prehospital ultrasound thoracic examination to improve decision making, triage, and care in blunt trauma.

Prehospital acute blunt thoracic trauma care remains difficult. Among then, diagnosis of atelectasis with ultrasound remains rare and unusual. We report the case of a worker who had a sharp chest pain currently after using a jackhammer. First clinical examination suspected a left tension pneumothorax but ruled out by sliding sign in left hemithorax ultrasound (US) examination. The right upper thoracic scan showed a well-defined lung point, a "hepatization" appearance with static air bronchograms, a diaphragm elevation and a dextrocardia in B mode, and a pseudobarcode with no lung pulse in Time

Ciliated cell domains with locally coordinated ciliary motion generate a mosaic of microflows in the brain's lateral ventricles.

Circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through the brain's ventricles is essential for maintaining brain homeostasis and supporting neurogenesis. CSF flow is supported by the structural polarization of multiciliated cells, which align with the flow direction. However, it remains unclear how the organization of tissue-wide polarity across the ciliary epithelium comprised of thousands of cells, determines the trajectory of the flow and efficient distribution of the CSF. Here, we used new approaches to analyze the organization of translational polarity across extensive areas of the lateral vent
