BACKGROUND: Von Willebrand disease (VWD) and hemophilia A and B are the most common types of hereditary coagulation-factor deficiencies. The frequency and type of complications of skin surgery in these patients are unknown. The increasing incidence of skin cancer prompted us to reflect upon this issue. While the incidence of skin cancer is increasing, the complications of skin surgery or ablative laser treatment remain unknown in this population.
AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of bleeding complications during and after skin surgery in patients with a hereditary coag

BACKGROUND: When a wound cannot be closed in a linear fashion and either a local flap or skin graft is needed, a purse-string suture can be a useful adjunct to wound closure. Local tissue architecture is maintained in cases where clear surgical margins have not been achieved at the time of extirpative skin cancer surgery. We hypothesized that this technique could be applied to a range of wound sizes and locations to avoid or reduce the need for skin grafting.
METHODS: We applied a non-absorbable purse-string suture to wounds in 18 patients over a 15-month period and measured the defect size b

Soft tissue defects of the scalp can be closed with varying techniques depending on size and depth of the defect. While small and superficial defects can be closed primarily or be left open for secondary intention healing, larger and deeper defects may need flaps or skin grafts. Extensive defects may require combined flaps or vacuum assisted closure techniques. Defects of the periosteum with denuded skull bone must be treated immediately to avoid bony complications. Usually, the tabula externa is fenestrated with holes or abraded totally to create better healing conditions. Granulation tissue

BACKGROUND: Closing Mohs' defects is a challenging undertaking for surgeons. There are many methods, including linear repair, local flaps, and skin grafts. Traditionally, geometric flaps have been a mainstay, particularly in the cheek and forehead. However, many flaps violate basic principles of following relaxed skin tension lines; also, they often necessitate significant dissection.
METHODS: All repairs of Mohs' facial defects performed sequentially from 2001 to 2008 by the senior author (J.F.T.) were reviewed. Chart review identified the size and location of the defect, method of closure,

OBJECTIVE: We aim to report a single surgeon's experience of using a penile skin advancement flap with penile dartos interposition for hypospadias fistula repair.
PATIENTS & METHODS: All hypospadias fistula repairs performed in our unit by this paediatric urologist between 2000 and 2012 were identified from a prospectively recorded database. Patients' case-notes were reviewed retrospectively gathering data on surgical technique, post-operative care and fistula recurrence on follow-up. Only those boys having repair by this advancement flap technique were included. A urethral catheter was left

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects intertriginous skin areas, clinically characterized by recurrent inflamed nodules, abscesses, sinus tracts, and severe scars. Systemic treatments may provide temporary relief, while wide surgical excision offers prolonged disease-free periods. We evaluated the most efficient wound closure methods following wide excision of HS lesions in terms of recurrence, functionality, and quality of life. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov, adhering to the PRISMA 2020 c

Recently published randomized trials examining skin closure technique on postcesarean wound complications have produced conflicting results. We performed a metaanalysis of trials comparing staples and subcuticular sutures for skin closure at cesarean section (CS). Pooled outcome measures were calculated using random effects models. Primary outcomes were rates of wound dehiscence (separation) and a composite wound complication rate. Secondary outcomes were patient satisfaction, operating time, and postoperative pain. A total of 877 women from 5 trials were included. Both wound separation (poole

OBJECTIVE: To report the result of the treatment of hypospadias using tubularized longitudinal island flap of the mucosa and skin on the dorsum of the penis.
METHODS: Between January 1995 and December 2003, 176 patients were operated on using this technique. Among them, 124 patients had penile hypospadias, 35 had the penoscrotal form, four had the scrotal form and three patients had the perineal form. After removing the whole chordee, a longitudinal pedicle island flap of mucosa and skin was created. The flap was transposed to the ventral side of the penis by the buttonhole manoeuvre, and ana

Facial plastic surgery is a multidisciplinary specialty largely driven by otolaryngology but includes oral maxillary surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, and plastic surgery. It encompasses both reconstructive and cosmetic components. The scope of practice for facial plastic surgeons in the United States may include rhinoplasty, browlifts, blepharoplasty, facelifts, microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck, craniomaxillofacial trauma reconstruction, and correction of defects in the face after skin cancer resection. Facial plastic surgery also encompasses the use of injectable fillers,

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disease that is difficult to manage and often refractory to medical management. Light and laser therapies have been utilized in the field of dermatology to treat a variety of skin conditions, but more recently were studied in the management of HS. Usually performed as outpatient procedures with a low risk of complications, they offer several advantages to traditional cold knife surgical procedures. We reviewed the various light- and laser-based treatments studied in HS and compared their efficacy. Outcome measures were not standardized, which mad

Following the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, individuals have begun to take preventive measures to avoid exposure. Among the precautionary measures, facemask was mostly emphasized. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of dermatological symptoms linked with face mask usage and explore other associated factors. This cross-sectional survey was conducted throughout all eight divisions of Bangladesh. 1297 people were approached using a fixed-step procedure on a random route sample where 803 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The overall prevalence of dermatological manifestation in this study

BACKGROUND: Because outpatient surgery is being increasingly scrutinized in the lay press, it is important that dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons accurately characterize the safety of office-based surgery. Although there is abundant anecdotal evidence to support the inherent safety of dermatologic surgery, there are few data that support the safety of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) as performed by appropriately trained dermatologic surgeons in outpatient settings.
DESIGN: All patients presenting for MMS micrographic surgery during the calendar year 2000 were prospectively enrolled in

BACKGROUND: Local flaps are commonly used during the treatment of skin tissue defects. Although there are many available procedures for the closure of triangular, circular and rhomboid-shaped defects, long-axis elliptical skin defects lack treatment options. To address this problem, a new local flap design called the cyclist flap procedure (CFP) was developed, so called because it resembles the silhouette of a person riding a bicycle.
METHODS: The CFP was performed in 29 patients aged 9-81 years in 2021-2022. The defects were localised in the sacral region (1), upper extremities (3), lower ex

Macrostomia is a rare and debilitating congenital anomaly with incompletely understood etiopathogenesis. Despite the phenotypic variability in macrostomia, plastic surgeons should demonstrate competence in the diagnosis and management of this condition. The anatomy, embryology, classification, and clinical presentation of macrostomia are reviewed in this manuscript. A historical overview of surgical repair is presented that forms the basis for understanding modern techniques of repair. Finally, an effective method of macrostomia repair is presented along with review of 5-year results. It is ou

BACKGROUND: A positive temporal artery biopsy (TAB) is essential to the diagnosis of temporal arteritis. Both this relatively common disease and its prolonged treatment with corticosteroids are associated with serious sequelae. Therefore, accurate and timely diagnosis is critical. The dermatologic surgery literature lacks a description of this straightforward surgical technique, as TABs are most often performed by ophthalmologists.
OBJECTIVE: As a service to our rheumatology department we began performing TABs on a same-day on-call basis in July 1996.
METHODS: We have performed 45 TABs in a
