Cystic fibrosis is the most common life-limiting genetic condition in Caucasians caused by Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene mutations. Sweat chloride is the current gold standard for diagnosis where values >60 mmol/L are diagnostic and values >30 mmol/L are indeterminate. Polarizable calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals have been well documented in breast biopsies, generally associated with benign apocrine metaplasia. In contrast, polarizable crystals are only rarely reported in skin adnexal neoplasms. Sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma is a rare, locally aggressive adnexal tumor that frequently occurs on the face of middle-aged adults, invades deeply, and has a propensity to recur. We report a rare instance of sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma occurring in a 6-year-old African American child and review the literature of this infrequently observed neoplasm.

Sweating aggravates itch in atopic dermatitis, but the mechanism is unclear. In this study, we examined the involvement of type I hypersensitivity in the aggravation of atopic dermatitis by sweating. Skin tests with autologous sweat were positive in 56 of 66 patients (84.4%) with atopic dermatitis, but only in 3 of 27 healthy volunteers (11.1%). In an attempt to characterize the immunocytochemical attributes of eccrine sweat gland carcinoma, we studied 32 examples of this tumor with antibodies to epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), cytokeratin (CK), carcinoembryonic antigen, S100 protein, alpha-lactalbumin, salivary amylase, blood group isoantigens, beta-2-microglobulin, and Leu M1.
