A Case for Hydrogen Sulfide Metabolism as an Oxygen Sensing Mechanism.

The ability to detect oxygen availability is a ubiquitous attribute of aerobic organisms. However, the mechanism(s) that transduce oxygen concentration or availability into appropriate physiological responses is less clear and often controversial. This review will make the case for oxygen-dependent metabolism of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and polysulfides, collectively referred to as reactive sulfur species (RSS) as a physiologically relevant O2 sensing mechanism. This hypothesis is based on observations that H2S and RSS metabolism is inversely correlated with O2 tension, exogenous H2S elicits phy

Highly sensitive and selective gas sensor using hydrophilic and hydrophobic graphenes.

New hydrophilic 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with various oxygen functional groups were employed to maintain high sensitivity in highly unfavorable environments (extremely high humidity, strong acidic or basic). Novel one-headed polymer optical fiber sensor arrays using hydrophilic GO and hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were carefully designed, leading to the selective sensing of volatile organic gases for the first time. The two physically different surfaces of GO and rGO could provide the sensing ability to distinguish between tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (MC), res

Inter-organ regulation by the brain in Drosophila development and physiology.

The brain plays an essential role in regulating physiological homeostasis by communicating with other organs. Neuronal cells either directly innervate target tissues and transmit signals or secrete systemic factors into the hemolymph to regulate bodily functions, including physiology, development, metabolism, and immunity. In this review, we discuss the systemic functions of inter-organ communication mediated by the brain in four distinct categories: (1) nutrient sensing and feeding, (2) gastrointestinal activity and metabolism, (3) development and metamorphosis, and (4) immunity and hematopoi

Development of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Optical Gas Sensors for the Non-Invasive Monitoring of Pathogenic Bacteria.

Hybrid optical gas sensors, based on different organic and inorganic materials, are proposed in this paper, with the aim of using them as optical artificial nose systems. Three types of organic and inorganic dyes, namely zinc-porphyrin, manganese-porphyrin, and zinc-phthalocyanine, were used as gas sensing materials to fabricate a thin-film coating on glass substrates. The performance of the gas sensor was enhanced by a thermal treatment process. The optical absorption spectra and morphological structure of the sensing films were confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and atomic force microscop

Adjustable crystallinity of covalent organic frameworks for electrochemical aptasensing of penicillin.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show a great potential application in the field of constructing electrochemical aptasensors due to their high specific surface area, abundant pores, and good stability. Crystallinity (i.e., orderliness) is directly related to the structural characteristics of porous frameworks and affects their sensing performance. However, few reports focus on the influence of crystallinity on electrocatalytic aptasensing performance. This work develops copper porphyrin-based COFs with different crystallinity to fabricate electrochemical aptasensors for detecting penicillin.

Low glucose-sensing cells in the carotid body.

Decreased plasma glucose concentration elicits a complex neuroendocrine response that prevents or rapidly corrects hypoglycemia as required to preserve brain function; however, where and how low glucose is sensed is unknown. Here we show that low glucose increases secretion from glomus cells in the carotid bodies, sensory organs whose stimulation by hypoxia produces sympathetic activation, by a process that depends on extracellular Ca2+ influx and is paralleled by inhibition of voltage-gated K+ channels. We propose a new glucose-sensing role for the carotid body glomus cell that serves to inte

Ear-Bot: Locust Ear-on-a-Chip Bio-Hybrid Platform.

During hundreds of millions of years of evolution, insects have evolved some of the most efficient and robust sensing organs, often far more sensitive than their man-made equivalents. In this study, we demonstrate a hybrid bio-technological approach, integrating a locust tympanic ear with a robotic platform. Using an Ear-on-a-Chip method, we manage to create a long-lasting miniature sensory device that operates as part of a bio-hybrid robot. The neural signals recorded from the ear in response to sound pulses, are processed and used to control the robot's motion. This work is a proof of concep

Two-photon imaging of cellular activities in oxygen sensing tissues.

The cellular oxygen sensing system of the body ensures appropriate adaptation of cellular functions toward hypoxia by regulating gene expression and ion channel activity. Two-photon laser microscopy is an ideal tool to study and prove the relevance of the molecular mechanisms within oxygen sensing pathways on the cellular and complex tissue or organ level. Images of hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) subunit nuclear mobility and protein-protein interaction in living cells, of hypoxia-induced changes in membrane potential and intracellular calcium of live ex vivo carotid bodies as well as of ra

Inter- and intrahemispheric sources of vestibular signals to V1.

Head movements are sensed by the vestibular organs. Unlike classical senses, signals from vestibular organs are not selectively conveyed to a dedicated cortical area but are broadcast throughout the cortex. This distributed processing pattern reflects the fundamental role of vestibular information in contextual modulation across diverse cortical computations. Surprisingly, the routes taken by vestibular signals to reach the cortex are still largely uncharted. Here, we show that the primary visual cortex (V1) receives real-time head movement signals-direction, velocity, and acceleration-from th

UV radiation-induced enterobacterial responses, other processes that influence UV tolerance and likely environmental significance.

The ability of enterobacteria to become UV-tolerant is important because such tolerance may enable organisms to resist irradiation in the environment, in water treatment, in shell-fish, in stages of food processing, and at locations in the domestic, commercial and hospital environment The mechanism for regulation of tolerance induction and SOS response induction has been studied for many years, and is well understood, except for the early stages of induction. Such early stages, namely sensing of the stimulus (UV irradiation) and the way in which such sensing leads to signal production, have un

[Basic and clinical aspects of calcimimetics. Beneficial and adverse effects of calcimimetics on various organs].

It is unknown about beneficial or harmful effects of calcimimetic, which is a selective, allosteric agonist for calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) , on various organs, excluding parathyroid gland. While the distribution of CaSR is broad, in addition to hypocalcemia-induced symptoms, either nausea or vomiting is the only adverse symptoms by calcimimetics. In this review, the mechanism of nausea or vomiting, as well as the beneficial or harmful effects upon some organs (e.g. bone, kidney and vessel) , are extrapolated.

Submersible voltammetric sensing probe for rapid and extended remote monitoring of opioids in community water systems.

The intensifying global opioid crisis, majorly attributed to fentanyl (FT) and its analogs, has necessitated the development of rapid and ultrasensitive remote/on-site FT sensing modalities. However, current approaches for tracking FT exposure through wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) are unadaptable, time-consuming, and require trained professionals. Toward developing an extended in situ wastewater opioid monitoring system, we have developed a screen-printed electrochemical FT sensor and integrated it with a customized submersible remote sensing probe. The sensor composition and design have

Drosophila sensory cilia lacking MKS proteins exhibit striking defects in development but only subtle defects in adults.

Cilia are conserved organelles that have important motility, sensory and signalling roles. The transition zone (TZ) at the base of the cilium is crucial for cilia function, and defects in several TZ proteins are associated with human congenital ciliopathies such as nephronophthisis (NPHP) and Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS). In several species, MKS and NPHP proteins form separate complexes that cooperate with Cep290 to assemble the TZ, but flies seem to lack core components of the NPHP module. We show that MKS proteins in flies are spatially separated from Cep290 at the TZ, and that flies mutant

Volatile affairs in microbial interactions.

Microorganisms are important factors in shaping our environment. One key characteristic that has been neglected for a long time is the ability of microorganisms to release chemically diverse volatile compounds. At present, it is clear that the blend of volatiles released by microorganisms can be very complex and often includes many unknown compounds for which the chemical structures remain to be elucidated. The biggest challenge now is to unravel the biological and ecological functions of these microbial volatiles. There is increasing evidence that microbial volatiles can act as infochemicals

Brain and sensory organ morphology in Antarctic eelpouts (Perciformes: Zoarcidae: Lycodinae).

Eelpouts of the family Zoarcidae comprise a monophyletic group of marine fishes with a worldwide distribution. Centers of high zoarcid diversity occur in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, with important radiations into the Arctic, along southern South America, and into the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. Along with snailfishes (Liparidae), zoarcids form an important component of the non-notothenioid fauna in the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica. We document the anatomy and histology of the brains, cranial nerves, olfactory apparatus, cephalic lateral lines, taste buds, and retinas of t

Muscle force and range of motion as predictors of standing balance in children with cerebral palsy.

Children with cerebral palsy frequently receive therapeutic intervention to remediate standing balance deficits. Evaluation of the impairments associated with poor balance could facilitate more effective treatment programs. This study evaluated the relationship between lower extremity force production, range of motion and standing balance in thirty-five children between the ages of 6 and 14 years of age with spastic cerebral palsy. Standing balance was evaluated using the Pediatric Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction (P-CTSIB). Hand-held dynamometry was used to assess force production and gon

Ontogeny of the calcium binding protein calbindin D-28k in the rat nervous system.

Calbindin D-28k immunoreactivity appeared at embryonal day 14 (E14) in the central nervous system as well as in the sensory organs and at E15 in the peripheral nervous system of the rat. At E14 the infundibular process of the diencephalon, cells of the posterior hypothalamus and of the dorsal thalamus were the only structures strongly immunostained in the brain, whereas neurons of the basal plate of the spinal cord, medulla oblongata and of the outermost layer of the cerebral cortex were only faintly labeled. Calbindin positive cerebellar Purkinje cells could be discerned at E15 together with

Physics-guided transformation of breathomic feature spaces into disease-specific representations for respiratory disease classification.

Exhaled breath is a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that reflect underlying physiological states, yet significant overlaps between conditions limit the detection of disease-specific signatures. Here, we introduce a physics-guided computational sensing framework that transforms breathomic feature spaces into representations that are diagnostically separable. Using a dataset of 121 samples related to asthma, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we develop a physics-guided computational model of photonic sensing based on mid-infrared spectral selectivity
