Renal cell carcinoma in patients with acquired cystic disease of the kidney: assessment using a combination of T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted, and chemical-shift MRI without the use of contrast material.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the MRI findings of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), including findings on diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) and chemical shift images (CSIs), in patients with acquired cystic disease of the kidney (ACDK) in relation to the histopathologic findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed the MRI findings of 10 RCCs in seven consecutive patients with ACDK. They evaluated the signal intensities (SIs) and signal homogeneity of the lesions on T2-weighted images, DWIs, and T1-weighted images. Thereafter, they evaluated the cytoplasmic fat in the lesions by

Semiautomated spleen volumetry with diffusion-weighted MR imaging.

In this article, we determined the relative accuracy of semiautomated spleen volumetry with diffusion-weighted (DW) MR images compared to standard manual volumetry with DW-MR or CT images. Semiautomated spleen volumetry using simple thresholding followed by 3D and 2D connected component analysis was performed with DW-MR images. Manual spleen volumetry was performed on DW-MR and CT images. In this study, 35 potential live liver donor candidates were included. Semiautomated volumetry results were highly correlated with manual volumetry results using DW-MR (r = 0.99; P < 0.0001; mean percentage a

High-Resolution 2D versus 3D Lumbar Spine MRI Optimized with a Deep Learning Reconstruction Algorithm and Prototype Conformal Coil.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lumbar spine MRI is predominantly performed using 2D FSE sequences. 3D FSE sequences offer potential advantages over 2D, especially with recent advances in deep-learning reconstruction (DLR) and the use of conformal high-density coil arrays to improve the SNR. This study aimed to compare image quality and diagnostically relevant differences between 2D and 3D lumbar spine protocols, both using a prototype conformal coil and DLR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects with lumbar curvature referred for routine lumbar spine MRI were prospectively recruited (n=31). A prototype, c

Integrated assessment of diabetic nephropathy by multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging with non-enhanced T1 mapping, diffusion tensor imaging, and diffusion kurtosis imaging.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the diagnostic utility of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) for early diabetic kidney disease (DKD). We aimed to assess renal impairment by combining parameters from non-enhanced T1 mapping, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI). METHODS: We prospectively recruited 63 patients with type 2 diabetes, who were divided into three groups based on urine albumin-creatinine ratio: Group 0 (simple diabetes, n = 11), Group 1 (early DKD, n = 20), and Group 2 (advanced DKD, n = 32). All patients underwent renal mp-MRI.

The relative contrast ratio of malignant bone lesion is highest on relative Fat Fraction maps compared with T1-weighted and b900 DWI images.

INTRODUCTION: Whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is increasingly used in clinical practice for detection of malignant bone disease. A high relative contrast ratio (RCR) of malignant bone lesions compared with normal bone can improve disease detection in breast, prostate and myeloma malignancies. However, the RCR of malignant bone lesions on T1w, DWI and relative Fat Fraction (rFF) maps derived from Dixon T1w have not been compared. METHODS: 110 baseline WB-MRI of patients with suspected malignant bone lesions were reviewed retrospectively. On each scan, up to four active bone lesions were identified, on

Simultaneous non-contrast assessment of cardiac microstructure and perfusion in vivo in the human heart.

BACKGROUND: Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging can provide information on cardiac microstructure and microvascular perfusion from a single examination. However, the spin echo-based approaches typically used for cardiac IVIM suffer from low sensitivity to changes in perfusion. The aim of this work was to develop a stimulated-echo (STEAM)-based method for IVIM and diffusion tensor cardiovascular magnetic resonance to simultaneously provide biomarkers of microstructure and perfusion in vivo in the human heart. METHODS: Here we introduce a novel STEAM-IVIM sequence incorporating phase cy

ADC Benchmark Range for Correct Diagnosis of Primary and Recurrent Middle Ear Cholesteatoma.

OBJECTIVES: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and in particular diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have been broadly proven to be the reference imaging method to discriminate between cholesteatoma and noncholesteatomatous middle ear lesions, especially when high tissue specificity is required. The aim of this study is to define a range of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values within which the diagnosis of cholesteatoma is almost certain. METHODS: The study was retrospectively conducted on a cohort of 124 patients. All patients underwent first- or second-look surgery because primary or seco

Quantification of structural cerebral abnormalities on MRI 18 months after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in patients who received endovascular treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Volume measurements performed on brain MRI after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) may provide insight into the structural abnormalities that underlie the commonly occurring and persistent long-term functional deficits after aSAH. We examined the pattern of long-term cerebral structural changes on MRI in relation to known risk factors for poor functional outcome. METHODS: We studied MRI scans from 38 patients who received endovascular treatment and were not dependent for activities of daily life at 18 months after aSAH. Risk factors for poor functional outcome (clinical

Standardized magnetic resonance imaging acquisition and reporting in pediatric multiple sclerosis.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is one of the most important paraclinical tools for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), and monitoring of disease progression and treatment response. This article provides clinicians and neuroradiologists caring for children with demyelinating disorders with a suggested standard MR imaging acquisition and reporting protocol, and defines a standard lexicon for lesion features typical of MS in children. As there is considerable overlap between the MR imaging features of pediatric- and adult-onset MS, the recommendations provided herein may be of relevance to

Semi-automatic vortex extraction in 4D PC-MRI cardiac blood flow data using line predicates.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Their initiation and evolution depends strongly on the blood flow characteristics. In recent years, advances in 4D PC-MRI acquisition enable reliable and time-resolved 3D flow measuring, which allows a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the patient-specific hemodynamics. Currently, medical researchers investigate the relation between characteristic flow patterns like vortices and different pathologies. The manual extraction and evaluation is tedious and requires expert knowledge. Standardized, (semi-)automatic and re

Voxel-based iterative sensitivity (VBIS) analysis: methods and a validation of intensity scaling for T2-weighted imaging of hippocampal sclerosis.

Abnormalities in the brain generally manifest on MRI as changes in shape (morphometry) or changes in the nature of the tissue (signal intensity). Voxel Based Morphometry (VBM) is a whole brain quantitative way of assessing morphometric changes. Voxel Based Relaxometry (VBR) directly assesses signal intensity changes in quantitative maps of T2 relaxation time, but this requires specialised multiple-echo acquisition sequences that are not usually available at clinical sites. This paper introduces and assesses an objective voxel-based statistical method for evaluation of signal intensity in group
