Coal tar is a by-product of the distillation of coal. It consists of a complex chemical mixture of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocabons, with high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzo[a]pyrene. We have previously shown that single painting on skin of mice increases the mutation frequency 16 times in murine epidermis cells (Thein et al. 2000). Spoils samples collected from a coal strip mine in southeastern Montana were examined for populations and activities of iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Spoils examined were of three types: (a) acidic pyrite-rich waste coal, (b) oxidation halo material, and (c) alkaline material, which was the most widespread type. Coal dust nanoparticles (CD-NPs) are a major risk factor for pneumoconiosis. We evaluated the protective effect of resveratrol against pulmonary fibrosis induced by CD-NPs in pneumoconiosis. Our results showed that CD-NPs exposure significantly reduced cell viability, inhibited proliferation, and induced apoptosis in type II alveolar cells, whereas resveratrol prevented these cellular changes.
