The cases of deafness presented here have been selected primarily to illustrate the degree to which the acoustic ganglion has degenerated in profound or total deafness. Examples of seven types of acquired diseases of the inner ear and one type of probable congenital degeneration of uncertain cause are given. The number of surviving ganglion cells in each 5-mm section of the cochlea has been expressed as a percentage of the normal average count corresponding to that section of the organ of Corti. The state of the acoustic ganglion has been correlated with that of the organ of Corti and the peri…

Acoustic reflex thresholds were measured on 251 subjects (418 ears) with varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss. The subjects are divided in three groups according to the pathology involved: presbyacusis and noise-induced hearing loss and combined hearing loss caused by both presbyacusis and noise exposure. The dynamic range of hearing was found to be reduced for all cases and at all frequencies. The decrease in dynamic range was proportional to the severity of the hearing loss. The sensation levels of the acoustic reflex thresholds seem to be dependent on the degree of hearing loss and

A family is described showing deafness in three consecutive generations. Hirshchsprung's disease was present in at least two of the affected patients and a history of bowel dysfunction was present in the third. The assocation of the two disorders in this family may be due to a single autosomal dominant gene and in this regard differs from previously reported isolated patients with Hirschsprung's disease and deafness.

The so-called labyrinthine otosclerosis is defined as a focal otosclerotic involvement of the labyrinthine capsule without stapes fixation. It produces a pure sensorineural hearing loss. The histology of this phenomenon is well known. The relative frequency of labyrinthine otosclerosis is between 4 and 40%, as referred in literature. On x-rays, an advanced demineralisation or complete obliteration of labyrinthic bone is suspicious of otosclerosis. There is no typical pattern of sensorineural hearing loss. But not seldom a fair discrimination index contrasts with a severe threshold evaluation i

The question is, is there any relation between sudden deafness and Menière's disease? Total hearing loss without recovery is typical of viral infection. In cases of sudden deafness some hearing rest generally remains. It can be the first symptom of Menière's disease, like the first attacks of vertigo which may occur without deafness. Measurements of stapedius reflex threshold and Békésy audiogram, especially the difference between the impulse tone and continuous tone indicate an inner hair cell damage and are helpful in the diagnosis of sudden deafness. But pathological adaptations are seen in…

A survey of the literature concerning sudden deafness caused by virus infection is followed by a discussion of 46 patients with the history of acute loss of hearing, who were subjected to virological-serological examination. In 9 patients the titre movement of the complement fixation reaction was regarded to imply a viral cause of the acute loss of hearing. This was corroborated in 5 cases by the history of recent viral infection. Pathogenetically, the significance of the viral endolymphatic labyrinthitis was underlined. The success of traditional therapy did not differ from the results in cas…

Two sisters had diagnoses of congenital monochromatism, cataracts, bilateral nonprogressive sensorineural deafness, and hyperinsulinism in both, and labyrinthine dysfunction in one. This recessively inherited condition is added to the growing number of syndromes in which one of the features may be a disturbance of hypothalamic function.

An entity of episodic true vertigo of delayed onset following sudden and profound sensorineural hearing loss is described. Data on 12 patients and three case reports are presented. The latency between sudden deafness and the onset of the vertigo varied from 1 to 68 years. The vestibular symptoms are identical to the vestibular symptoms of Ménière's disease, and there is some evidence that endolymphatic hydrops in the previously deafened ear represents at least part of the labyrinthine pathology. Labyrinthectomy in the deaf ear was curative. Tentatively, this entity is best considered a variant…

Rubella antibody was detected in 85 (61%) of 139 children aged from 6 months to 7 years with congenital perceptive deafness. Of the 112 children who were aged under 4 years 61 (54%) had rubella antibody (seropositive) compared with 7.1% in randomly selected children of the same age. A close correlation was found between the presence of antibody in children with perceptive deafness and (1) a maternal history of rash or contact in early pregnancy, and (2) with the presence of other rubella-type defects. Intrauterine rubella was thought to be the cause of the deafness in 82 (59%) of the 139 child…
