Heterogeneous pattern of retinal nerve fiber layer in multiple sclerosis. High resolution optical coherence tomography: potential and limitations.

BACKGROUND: Recently the reduction of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) was suggested to be associated with diffuse axonal damage in the whole CNS of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. However, several points are still under discussion. (1) Is high resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) required to detect the partly very subtle RNFL changes seen in MS patients? (2) Can a reduction of RNFL be detected in all MS patients, even in early disease courses and in all MS subtypes? (3) Does an optic neuritis (ON) or focal lesions along the visual pathways, which are both very common in MS, lim

Relative course of retinal nerve fiber layer birefringence and thickness and retinal function changes after optic nerve transection.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that alterations of RNFL birefringence precede changes in RNFL thickness in an experimental model of RGC injury and, secondarily, to determine the time course of RGC functional abnormalities relative to RNFL birefringence and thickness changes. METHODS: RNFL birefringence was measured by scanning laser polarimetry (GDx VCC; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA). RNFL thickness was measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT, Spectralis HRA+OCT; Heidelberg Engineering, GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany). Retinal function was assessed by three forms

In situ sensing of volatile organic compounds in groundwater: first field tests of a mid-infrared fiber-optic sensing system.

A prototype mid-infrared sensor system for the determination of volatile organic pollutants in groundwater was developed and tested under real-world conditions. The sensor comprises a portable Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, coupled to the sensor head via mid-infrared transparent silver halide fiber-optic cables. A 10 cm unclad middle section of the 6-m-long fiber is coated with ethylene propylene copolymer in order to enrich the analytes within the penetration depth of the evanescent field protruding from the fiber sensor head. A mixture of tetrachloroethylene, dichlorobenzene, dieth

Cell migration from the ganglionic eminence to the neocortex investigated by labeling nuclei with UV irradiation via a fiber-optic cable.

Recent studies have shown that the ganglionic eminence is one of the sources of tangentially migrating cells in the developing neocortex. Since the migration of the DiI-labeled cells from the ganglionic eminence to the neocortex was not monitored by videomicroscopy in these reports, we devised a novel method to study cell migration in vitro and in vivo. The new method involves ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of the cells through a fiber-optic cable and subsequent identification of the irradiated cells on the basis of the formation of thymine dimers in the nuclei. First, we tested the new method (

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy with optic atrophy. Ultrastructural and morphometric observations on nerve fibers, mitochondria, and dense-cored vesicles.

Nerve biopsy specimens from three cases of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy with optic atrophy were studied by light and electron microscopy and by morphometry. All cases had a chronic neuropathy of the neuronal/axonal type with little, presumably secondary, demyelination. There was predominant reduction of the large-caliber population of myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers. The number of dense-cored vesicles in unmyelinated and small myelinated fibers was increased. Abnormal mitochondria in Schwann cells with paracrystalline inclusions, prominent cristae including paracrystalline

Validation of Magnetic Resonance Brain Thermometry and Bioheat Modeling of Brain Temperature Using Direct Measurements With an Implanted Fiber Optic Probe.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Brain temperature is a promising marker of prognosis after injury. Although magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry and biophysical modeling can approximate absolute temperature, limited validation has been performed with direct measurements in a large animal model. The goal of this pilot study was to compare brain temperature measured using MR chemical shift thermometry (CST) and biophysical modeling with that measured using a fiber optic probe in a porcine model. METHODS: MR data were acquired from a Yorkshire pig using a 3 T whole body MR scanner, with simultaneous m

Ultrasensitive optical fiber LSPR biosensor functionalized with gold nanorods, KMO nanoflowers, and ZnCdS/ZnS quantum dots for maduramicin detection.

Maduramicin (MD) is a widely used anticoccidial agent whose residues in animal-derived foods pose potential risks to food safety and public health. In this work, a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensor based on a nested tapered optical fiber was developed for rapid and sensitive MD detection. The sensing platform integrates gold nanorods, KMO nanoflowers, and ZnCdS/ZnS quantum dots to enhance plasmonic coupling and interfacial signal transduction. The sensor exhibited a linear response from 0.1 to 40 ng/mL with R2 > 0.981 and a limit of detection of 0.087 ng/mL. Excellent select

Recording living and postmortem friction ridge patterns using image processing and a fiber-optic-inspired total internal reflection method.

Recording friction ridge patterns is a critical step in personal identification, as only clear impressions can be reliably compared with database records. This study presents two approaches-image processing and a fiber-optic-inspired total internal reflection method (FOM)-and compares them with frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR), ink, and powder methods to identify a simple and reliable workflow for forensic evidence collection. The results indicate that no single method is suitable for all fingerprint conditions; instead, a combination of complementary techniques is required. The rec
