Gorlin's syndrome with a thin corpus callosum and a third ventricular cyst.

Gorlin's syndrome (naevoid basal cell carcinoma) is an autosomal dominant tumor-predisposition syndrome, classically consists of multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin, odontogenic keratocyst of the jaw, various skeletal abnormalities, and lamellar falx calcifications. Many associated lesions have been reported. We report a case of Gorlin's syndrome in a 22-year-old man in whom CT and MR images showed unusual findings of the thin corpus callosum and third ventricular cyst. We present a case of this syndrome with special emphasis on its unusual neuroradiological findings and radiological ma…

[Congenital malformations of the brain. 2: Malformations of the corpus callosum and holoprocencephalies].

The corpus callosum is formed between the 7th and the 20th gestational week. If this process is disrupted, partial or complete callosal agenesis may ensue. As large parts of the supra- and infratentorial brain are created during this critical period, associated anomalies need always to be searched for when callosal agenesis is present. Associations with neuro-genetic syndromes also exist. The corpus callosum is generally formed from front to back ("front-to-back rule"). Therefore, a partial callosal agenesis usually involves the posterior portion of the corpus callosum, while a secondary lesio…

Corpus callosum atrophy in adolescents with antecedents of moderate perinatal asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: The corpus callosum (CC) is a cerebral structure that reflects cognitive status in several neurological pathologies. Visual inspection of MRI has shown that hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy(HIE) causes callosal damage. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To quantify the CC surface in a sample of patients with antecedents of HIE and a group of matched controls. RESEARCH DESIGN: Comparisons of CC measures among control subjects, mild HIE patients and moderateHIE patients as well as correlates of CC surface and neuropsychological performance. METHODS: Twenty-one adolescent patients with childhood an…

Abnormalities of the corpus callosum in first episode, treatment naive schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Structural alterations in the association cortices as well as in the corpus callosum (CC) have been described in schizophrenia, and have been considered to reflect developmental abnormalities. Areas of primary and association cortices have been topographically mapped in the CC. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether, in schizophrenia, there are alterations in CC subdivisions that connect association, but not primary, cortices, and also to see if the normative, developmentally mediated increase in CC size with age is absent in this disorder. METHODS: The midsagittal magnetic resonance …

Midline corpus callosum is a neuroanatomical focus of fetal alcohol damage.

Prenatal exposure to high levels of alcohol often induces birth defects that combine morphological stigmata with neurological or neuropsycho … To this end, three-dimensional (3D) locations were recorded for 67 homologous points on or near the corpus callosum in magnetic resonance (MR) brain images from 60 adolescents and adults who were normal, 60 diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome, and 60 diagnosed with fetal alcohol effects. We combined the standard statistical approach to this type of geometric da …

Interhemispheric transfer time in a patient with a partial lesion of the corpus callosum.

The interhemispheric transfer time (ITT) of basic visuo-motor integration was investigated in a patient who had a lesion of the corpus callosum that spared the splenium and rostrum. Overall, 4291 simple reaction times were collected during unimanual responses to tachistoscopically presented lateralized simple visual stimuli at 4 degrees, 6 degrees and 10 degrees. Despite retaining some abilities that typically require the integration of information between hemispheres (e.g. haptic naming, tachistoscopic lateralized consonant reading) the patient performed similarly to completely callosotomized…

Interhemispheric Stroop effects in partial and complete agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Previous research had demonstrated diminished interhemispheric Stroop effects in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), suggesting an important role for the callosum in interhemispheric color-word and color-patch interactions. However, this outcome rested on the results of only 1 ACC participant, who had normal intelligence and a minimum of other neuropathology. In the research reported herein, the role of the corpus callosum in interhemispheric Stroop interference and facilitation was investigated in 9 individuals with complete or partial ACC and normal intelligence, and in n…

A study of three cases of familial related agenesis of the corpus callosum.

This paper provides data on a family in which three members, all female, have been diagnosed as having agenesis of the corpus callosum. That all three acallosal individuals came from the same family and showed relatively uniform neuropsychological impairment and could be compared in similar terms with their "callosal" siblings, also female, provides a unique sample. Inter-hemispheric transfer, psychometric measures, and motor and cognitive function were examined in the acallosal individuals, all of whom had borderline to low-average intelligence, with results compared to their non-acallosal si…

A new case of neonatal progeroid syndrome with agenesis of corpus callosum.

We report on a female infant with a history of severe intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, pseudohydrocephaloid cranium, frontal bossing, widened fontanelles, prominent scalp veins, progeroid face, entropion, beaked nose, small mouth, generalized lipodystrophy, camptodactyly and hypoplasia of lower limb muscles, suggesting the diagnosis of neonatal progeroid syndrome (NPS). In addition, she had congenital hip dysplasia and agenesis of corpus callosum. It is the first Hungarian case with neonatal progeroid syndrome.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: a United Kingdom series of 56 cases.

A survey of cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum was carried out to examine its associations, utilising the British Neurological Surveillance Unit (BNSU). Fifty six cases were reported (36 male), 37 were adults. Nearly two thirds had epilepsy; half of the adult cases had intellectual impairment as estimated clinically, and a third a psychiatric disorder. Nine cases (five adults) were apparently normal neurologically, and may have escaped detection but for a coincidental or minor disorder leading to neurological investigation. The BNSU is a valuable aid in the study of rare disorders but in…

[Agenesis of the corpus callosum. An example of prognosis uncertainty in fetal medicine].

OBJECTIVE: For an increasing number of fetal pathologies, means of diagnosis have progressed faster than knowledge of the prognosis. Decisions are extremely difficult for the medical staff and the parents each time that outcome is uncertain. Agenesis of the corpus callosum, whose diagnosis may be certain through ultrasonography and MRI illustrates this situation well. METHODS: A historical multicentric study enabled us to analyze 37 cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum with a prenatal diagnosis and 10 cases with a post-natal one. RESULTS: Among the 37 prenatal diagnoses, we found 28 case…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum associated with paroxysmal hypothermia: Shapiro's syndrome.

Spontaneous recurrent hypothermia and hyperhidrosis associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum was first described by Shapiro and Plum in 1967. Since then, several cases with similar symptoms (now known as Shapiro's syndrome or spontaneous periodic hypothermia) have been described. We report another case of this syndrome in a 21-year-old-man, and discuss possible pathogenetic mechanisms and therapeutic approaches.

Agenesis of corpus callosum and anophthalmia in the asplenia syndrome. A recognisable association?

We present a newborn infant with the asplenia syndrome and unique associated features of corpus callosum agenesis, anophthalmia and coloboma. Previous reports of eye abnormalities or corpus callosum agenesis in patients with asplenia suggest that this may represent a distinct clinically recognisable entity of abnormal lateralisation.

Prenatal diagnosis of intracranial lipoma associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

BACKGROUND: Lipoma of the corpus callosum is a congenital malformation present in 1:1700 individuals. Only three cases of prenatal sonographic diagnosis have been described. CASES: Two cases of prenatal sonographic diagnosis of intracranial lipoma are described. The first case was visible at 26 weeks' gestation and was associated with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, a characteristic midline gyral pattern, and fetal colpocephaly. The second case was an isolated lipoma diagnosed at 37 weeks. In both cases transvaginal scanning and color Doppler studies were useful adjuncts in making th…

Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome with dysgenesis of the corpus callosum in a Bedouin family.

We report on the first known Bedouin family with Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (MIM 175700). The index patient and his father shared pre- and postaxial polysyndactyly, mild mental retardation, and corpus callosum dysgenesis. Their phenotypic findings were compared with reported cases of both Greig cephalopolysyndactyly (GCPS) and acrocallosal syndromes. This family represents the second report of the rare occurrence of dysgenesis of the corpus callosum in GCPS.

The persisting mesonephric duct syndrome in a neonate with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a rare condition, often associated with craniofacial, skeletal and genitourinary abnormalities. We report on a male newborn in whom all of these organ systems were affected. The genitourinary anomaly consisted of vaso-ureteral fusion accompanied by renal, ureteral, vesical, ductal and genital malformations. The diagnostic approach and management of this unusual case are described and the literature is reviewed.
