[New technique for treatment of hypospadias with sutures by using an Onlay flap].

The Onlay island flap urethroplasty was originally described for repair of anterior hypospadias without chordee. Then the technique was used for repair of penile hypospadias with a well developed urethral plate and exhibiting little or no chordee after release of skin tethering. In fact, it is possible to treat all penile hypospadias even with severe chordee using: 1) release of the chordee without dividing the urethral plate and 2) reconstruction of the urethra with an onlay island flap.

Treatment of ptosis by levator resection with adjustable sutures via the anterior approach.

The authors describe a one-step anterior approach levator resection technique with intraoperative adjustable sutures. Forty-four ptotic eyes were divided into five groups, and the results of this technique were evaluated for each of these five types of ptosis. Our results show that it is not possible to predict the extent of a levator resection preoperatively from the assessment of the levator function and degree of ptosis. We therefore propose this flexible method as the operation of choice for the correction of senile, traumatic and congenital ptosis.

Hypersensitivity to chromated catgut sutures: a case report and review of the literature.

Chromated catgut sutures are used extensively in general surgical procedures. Although delayed hypersensitivity reactions to this material are difficult to diagnose post-operatively--ie, they may be interpreted as non-specific complications of surgery--the condition can be readily evaluated by patch testing with chromate or intracutaneous placement of the actual suture material. Multiple reports in the literature suggested that there was an increased frequency of post-operative adhesions, wound dehiscence, infection, and even intestinal obstruction along the line of suture material to which th…

Effect of crown-attached sutures on healing of experimental furcation defects in dogs.

This study evaluates whether suturing of replaced flaps with crown-attached sutures, following reconstructive surgery, counteracts postoperative recession of the gingival margins and facilitates new attachment. Through-and-through furcation defects were created in the mandibular premolars of 5 beagle dogs. Bone was surgically removed from the furcation and around each root to a level 3 to 4 mm below the cemento-enamel junction. Steel wires were placed in the furcations for 6 weeks to enhance plaque formation. After 12 weeks, reconstructive surgery that included acid conditioning of root surfac…

[Pre-operative retina reapplication by active immobilization of the eye with traction sutures].

Twenty-five cases of retinal detachment were treated pre-operatively by the so-called active immobilization method described by Rosengren and Algvère. This procedure can be employed for all types of detachment, and gives significant reapplication in 80 p. cent of cases, simplifying subsequent surgery. Complications are rarely observed and can be easily prevented.

Biomechanical tensile test for capsule repair comparing suturing methods including interrupted, continuous, and barbed sutures.

BACKGROUND: Capsule repair plays an important role in total joint arthroplasty. However, no biomechanical studies have indicated the optimal suturing methods and materials in capsule repair. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the suturing methods (interrupted and continuous sutures) and materials (Vicryl and Stratafix) for capsule repair using porcine skin specimens. METHODS: Three groups with eight porcine skin specimens were used as a surrogate for human capsules. The V-I group with 1-Vicryl interrupted sutures, V-C group with 1-Vicryl continuous sutures, and S group with 1-S…

Comparison of Suture Anchor Repair and Suture Tape Augmentation for Reconstruction of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament: A Biomechanical Study.

OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are various surgical options for the treatment of lateral ankle sprains, and deciding which surgical option to use is a question worth considering. Furthermore, there is a relative scarcity of mechanical research comparing suture anchor repair (SAR) and suture tape augmentation (STA) internal brace for the repair of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL). Therefore, this study aimed to compare the efficacy of arthroscopically all-inside ATFL SAR and STA for reconstruction to treat lateral ankle sprains through biomechanical testing. METHODS: Eighteen fresh-froze

To suture or not to suture? Does globe immobilisation technique affect clinical outcome in stereotactic radiosurgery for uveal melanoma?

INTRODUCTION: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a valuable treatment option for uveal melanoma, offering excellent tumour control rates and eye preservation. Its efficacy relies upon accurate localisation of the tumour, which is challenging in the mobile eye. Various methods of globe immobilisation have been used, including non-invasive devices, such as eye movement tracking and suction cups, but common practice is to use local anaesthetic block with or without transconjunctival suturing of the extraocular muscles. Some studies have suggested that the addition of muscle suturing to local anae

Suture Slippage After Arthroscopic Cuff Repair: Medial Displacement of Suture Knots on Follow-up Ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Compared with the single-row technique, the double-row rotator cuff repair technique is known to have a higher load to failure and a lower frequency of gap formation, leading to a lower retear rate. There are some patients with poor clinical outcomes or poor muscle strength without radiologic retear. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To assess the postoperative position of suture knots via serial ultrasonography in patients who had undergone arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with the suture-bridge technique. Our hypothesis was that the suture would pull out of the lateral anchor (suture slippage
