[Congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. Apropos of a case].

The present paper describes a case of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (S.D.C.), a heritable bone dysplasia manifested at birth and characterized by short stature and retarded ossification of vertebral bodies, pelvis and extremities. Differential diagnosis which is important for genetic counselling purposes is established between S.D.C. and Morqu's disease, diastrophic dwarfism, metatropic dwarfism, psuedoachondroplasia and hypoachondroplasia.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in a case of panhypopituitarism: a possible role of growth hormone treatment.

Panhypopituitarism manifests various symptoms including growth failure, hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency and hypogonadism. Dwarfism is an important problem in children with this condition, and long-term treatment with recombinant human growth hormone (GH) is usually required. We report a 24-year-old man with panhypopituitarism complicated by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). The patient had been treated with GH for hypopituitary dwarfism from 3 years of age. Proteinuria was initially noticed at 15 years of age and persisted despite cessation of GH supplementation at 18 years of a…

Robinow syndrome with growth hormone deficiency: treatment with growth hormone.

We describe a 5 years and nine months old boy who presented with facial features, vertebral anomalies and dwarfism consistent with Robinow syndrome. Investigations revealed growth hormone (GH) deficiency to be the cause of his dwarfism. We reviewed data on four other patients with Robinow syndrome from the Genentech National Cooperative Growth Study (NCGS). Results of GH testing on three out of four were available and showed GH deficiency. Recombinant human GH therapy in our patient and the three patients from the NCGS resulted in a significant increase in the growth rate per year. The cause o…

Robinow syndrome without mesomelic 'brachymelia': a report of five cases.

A family is described in which the father and his two children had Robinow syndrome, but with no consistent brachymelia or dwarfism. Two further sporadic cases are described, one with rhizomelic brachymelia and dwarfism and the other with generalised shortening of the limbs. An attempt is also made to distinguish between the phenotype of autosomal dominant and recessive cases on the basis of the familial cases in this paper and other reported cases.

Campomelic dysplasia associated with mandibular clefting.

Campomelic dysplasia (CD), is a lethal dwarfism of the newborn, characterised by rhizomelic dwarfism, bowed femora and tibiae, associated with other skeletal and extraskeletal defects. It is suggested that there are long-limbed and short-limbed varieties. Various clinical and radiological anomalies have been described in both types of CD. Here, we describe for the first time a cleft in the mandibula in a patient with campomelic dysplasia.

OsBBX14 promotes photomorphogenesis in rice by activating OsHY5L1 expression under blue light conditions.

In rice, OsBBX14, a B-box (BBX) transcription factor, reportedly delays heading. Here, we revealed that OsBBX14 positively regulates rice photomorphogenesis. The OsBBX14-overexpressing (OsBBX14-OX) seedlings were hypersensitive to light, especially blue light, and exhibited dwarfism, while the OsBBX14 knock-out plants (osbbx14) were taller than wild-type plants under blue light. Histological analyses indicated that the observed dwarfism was mainly due to decreased cell length. Additionally, OsBBX14 abundance (mRNA and protein levels) was influenced by different light wavelengths in a time-depe…

Convergence in reduced body size, head size, and blood glucose in three island reptiles.

Many oceanic islands harbor diverse species that differ markedly from their mainland relatives with respect to morphology, behavior, and physiology. A particularly common morphological change exhibited by a wide range of species on islands worldwide involves either a reduction in body size, termed island dwarfism, or an increase in body size, termed island gigantism. While numerous instances of dwarfism and gigantism have been well documented, documentation of other morphological changes on islands remains limited. Furthermore, we lack a basic understanding of the physiological mechanisms that…

Basilar impression in an achondroplastic dwarf: causative role in tetraparesis.

The neurological and radiological findings in a case of chondrodystrophic dwarfism are described. The progressive tetraparesis proved to be based on a high-level medullary compression resulting from basilar impression and upper cervical stenosis. Surgical decompression led to the disappearance of the tetraparetic phenomena. Various aspects of chondrodystrophic dwarfism and basilar impression are discussed in relation to the neurological symptomatology, and the question of whether, in general, more attention should be given to the cranio-cervical region, is raised.

Establishment of a novel dwarf rat strain: cartilage calcification insufficient (CCI) rats.

Rats with dwarfism accompanied by skeletal abnormalities, such as shortness of the limbs, tail, and body (dwarf rats), emerged in a Jcl-derived Sprague-Dawley rat colony maintained at the Institute for Animal Experimentation, St. Marianna University Graduate School of Medicine. Since the dwarfism was assumed to be due to a genetic mutation based on its frequency, we bred the dwarf rats and investigated their characteristics in order to identify the causative factors of their phenotypes and whether they could be used as a human disease model. One male and female that produced dwarf progeny were…

Anaesthetic management of a parturient with Laron syndrome.

We report a case of a parturient with Laron syndrome, a rare form of dwarfism which results from an inability to generate insulin-like growth factor 1. In addition to dwarfism these patients may have craniofacial abnormalities, atlantoaxial instability, spinal stenosis and metabolic, musculoskeletal and genitourinary abnormalities. The patient underwent an urgent caesarean section using combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia. Laron syndrome is reviewed and its anaesthetic implications discussed.

[Fatal nanism: 3 different entities].

Three cases of congenital dwarfism are presented. All of them are lethal and represent the three better known nonviable nosologic entities: Achondrogenesis I, Achondrogesis II and Thanatophoric dwarfism. According to clinical features and radiologic data it is possible to approach the diagnosis accurately. We comment genetic, clinic, radiologic and histologic aspects of these processes. It is important to establish a differential diagnosis as these entities have different genetic basis, what influences genetic counsel.

Achondroplasia with oligodontia: Report of a rare case.

Achondroplasia is considered as a form of skeletal dysplasia/dwarfism that manifests with stunted stature and disproportionate limb shortening. Achondroplasia is of special interest in the field of dentistry because of its characteristic craniofacial features. It has been considered as the most common short-limbed dwarfism syndrome. Very few authors have reported the presence of oligodontia in achondroplastic patients. The present paper reports a rare case of oligodontia in a young, female, achondroplastic patient.

[Cloverleaf skull and other malformations of the skull. Pathology and clinical aspect].

Malformations of different parts of the cartilage results in achondrogenesis II, thanatophoric dwarfism and in metatropic dwarfism. Whether the base of the skull or the cranial-distal skeleton are affected, both together or separately, depends upon the localization of the defect within the cartilage. The different types of the cloverleaf syndrome are characterised by a defect of vessels and cartilage that affect the chondrocranium and the cranial-distal skeleton in different grades. The mal-development of the vessel-system is particularly marked in the upper back of the calotte.

Specific osseous spurs in a lethal form of hypophosphatasia correlated with 3D prenatal ultrasonographic images.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia is an osseous dysplasia with highly variable clinical expression, ranging from a recessive lethal prenatal type to late onset dominant short stature with premature shedding of teeth. Lethal forms of hypophosphatasia include short limb dwarfism with lack of ossification, especially on the vertebral bodies, very slender ribs and clavicles, and bowed, short lower extremities, with a bifid aspect of the diaphyses. Alkaline phosphatase is abnormally low in liver, bone, kidney and plasma. METHODS: We present here the prenatal images of a lethal form of hypophosphatasia,…

Prenatal diagnosis of dyssegmental dysplasia. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Since the first use of sonography, most fetal dwarfism has been detectable prenatally. The correct differentiation of the subtype of dwarfism is difficult at times. Dyssegmental dysplasia is probably an exception to these subtypes because the vertebral disorganization and occipital encephalocele at times permits prenatal diagnosis. CASE: A 34-year-old woman, gravida 3, para 1, elective abortion 1 for dwarfism, was referred at 27 weeks' gestation for cystic hygroma. Further sonographic findings included: cystic hygroma with massive ascites, micromelia, occipital encephalocele, spin…

Endocrinological studies in ataxiatelangiectasia and other immunological deficiency diseases.

Endocrinological and immunological studies were performed in five patients with ataxia-telangiectasia, two patients with sex-linked non-lymphopenic hypogammaglobulinaemia, one patient with sex-linked lymphopenic hypogammaglobulinaemia, and two patients with hypopituitary dwarfism. One of five patients with ataxia-telangiectasia had deficient growth hormone responses to insulin-induced hypoglycaemia but normal responses to arginine infusion. One pubertal ataxia-telangiectasia patient had increased gonadotropin secretion. Patients with hypopituitary dwarfism failed to respond to insulin-induced …

Adaptive Traits and Molecular Mechanisms of Rhododendron Species in Changbai Mountains' Alpine Tundra: A Phenotype-Transcriptome Study.

Alpine tundra's harsh conditions challenge plants, but Rhododendron's adaptive mechanisms remain unclear. This study explored phenotypic/transcriptomic adaptations of three Rhododendron species (R. aureum, R. lapponicum, R. redowskianum) in Changbai Mountains' tundra vs. timberline. Mature leaves were sampled for leaf length and leaf width measurement and RNA-seq. Results showed leaf width (not leaf length uniformly) reduced in tundra across all species. RNA-seq identified 2399-5716 DEGs per species; plant dwarfism DEGs (e.g., DELLA, EDS1) were up-regulated. Shared DEGs were enriched in carbon…
