Tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome. The first case in Japan.

The case of a 13-year-old girl with tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome is presented. It is characterized by sparse and slow growing hair, pear-shaped nose and cone-shaped epiphyses of hands and feet. The inheritance pattern is probably autosomal dominant transmission.

Neurologic complications in children with enterovirus 71 infection.

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus 71 infection causes hand-foot-and-mouth disease in young children, which is characterized by several days of fever and vomiting, ulcerative lesions in the oral mucosa, and vesicles on the backs of the hands and feet. The initial illness resolves but is sometimes followed by aseptic meningitis, encephalomyelitis, or even acute flaccid paralysis similar to paralytic poliomyelitis. METHODS: We describe the neurologic complications associated with the enterovirus 71 epidemic that occurred in Taiwan in 1998. At three major hospitals we identified 41 children with culture-co

Regional limb cooling for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced toxicities: a narrative review.

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), hand-foot syndrome (HFS), and nail changes are common adverse effects associated with chemotherapy, significantly impacting the quality of life of cancer patients, and effective interventions remain an unmet need in oncologic care. Regional limb cooling is an emerging non-pharmacological approach used to prevent or reduce the severity of these adverse side effects. Although the awareness of regional limb cooling is rather prevalent, the overall use and efficacy of this non-pharmacological therapy in preventing chemotoxicities is not u…

Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia associated with high-dose methotrexate: Case report.

BACKGROUND: Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE) is a common adverse event seen with many chemotherapeutic agents as well as targeted therapies which is very debilitating for the patient. To the best of our knowledge there are only a few cases of PPE reported with methotrexate infusion to date. CASE AND CONCLUSION: We report a case of Burkitt Lymphoma, who developed severe PPE with methotrexate infusion and responded very well with conservative management and dose reduction in subsequent cycles.

[Infection mechanism of enterovirus 71].

Identification of a specific viral receptor is important for understanding the virus infection mechanism. I identified P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) as one of the functional receptors for enterovirus 71 (EV71), a pathogen that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease. PSGL-1, which belongs to the sialomucin family, is a transmembrane protein mainly expressed on leukocytes. Tyrosine sulfation in the N-terminal region of PSGL-1 is critical for PSGL-1's capacity to bind EV71. The identification of EV71 receptors provides important mechanistic information about viral entry into cells and h

[Freeman-Sheldon syndrome: clinical manifestations and anesthetic and surgical management].

We report a new sporadic case of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. The parents were not blood relatives. The boy showed characteristic deformities of distal arthrogryposis in the hands and feet, as well as the typical features of "whistling face syndrome". In addition, the patient showed other clinical manifestations such as a large bilateral inguinal hernia and thoracic cage abnormalities. The latter abnormality led to serious episodes of bronchopneumonia that delayed the surgical repair of bilateral inguinal hernia. Knowledge of the sonographic characteristics of deformities of the extremities is es

An apparently new acrocraniofacial syndrome with cranial nerve and visceral anomalies.

We report details of a neonate with cranial bone dysplasia, broad nasal bridge, microphthalmia, optic and olfactory nerve anomalies, pulmonary segmentation defects, polydactyly, abnormally positioned and shaped thumbs, absent mesentery to the gut and streak gonads. Review of the literature and relevant databases does not identify a likely diagnosis.

Symbrachydactyly involving hands and feet.

Two patients are described with a symbrachydactyly of the hand and foot. This is a rare combination which cannot be explained by the subclavian artery supply disruption sequence.

Previously undescribed syndrome of spondylometaphyseal dysplasia, osteocartilaginous metaplasia of long bones, and progressive osteolysis of distal phalanges.

We present the findings and clinical course of a Caucasian woman (now age 23 1/2) who has been treated since early childhood for a previously undescribed syndrome of painful osteocartilaginous metaplasia of long bone metaphyses and painful distal phalangeal osteolysis and soft tissue swelling. Despite extensive evaluations and attempts at effective treatment, the cause and pathogenesis of her unique musculoskeletal disorder remain elusive.

Anonychia and absence/hypoplasia of distal phalanges (Cooks syndrome): report of a second family.

We describe a second family with four affected members in three successive generations with a rare nail dysplasia syndrome. The syndrome, which was first reported by Cooks et al in 1985, is characterised by bilateral nail hypoplasia of digits 1-3, with absence of nails of digits 4-5 of the hands, and total absence of all toe nails. In addition, there is absence/hypoplasia of the distal phalanges of the hands and feet. Our family confirms this syndrome as a distinct entity with autosomal dominant inheritance.

[Paraneoplastic acrokeratosis (Bazex' syndrome) associated with metastatic adenopathy of the neck from a differentiated carcinoma simultaneous with a well differentiated carcinoma of the oral cavity].

The Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica is a skin pathology sometimes linked with malignancies of the upper respiratory or digestive ways. We report a case of a 71-year-old man enduring and dedifferenciated carcinoma of the parotid gland and metastatic cervical lymph nodes. Perusal of the literature about Bazex's syndrome.
