EEC syndrome without ectrodactyly: report of two new families.

In this report we describe two families with variable manifestations of the EEC syndrome. The findings in these families confirm that no symptom is obligatory for the diagnosis of EEC syndrome. In the absence of cleft lip/palate, EEC patients have a characteristic facial morphology with maxillary hypoplasia, short philtrum, and broad nasal tip.

The acrocallosal syndrome.

The acrocallosal syndrome is characterized by peculiar facies, polydactyly of the hands and/or feet, and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Two unrelated 4-month-old boys with consanguineous parents are reported. Both exhibited the main features of the syndrome, but neither of them had partial reduplication of halluces. Consequently, pre-axial polydactyly of the feet is not considered to be a constant feature of the acrocallosal syndrome. The similarity of the acrocallosal syndrome to Greig syndrome is discussed, but it appears unlikely that the two syndromes are identical. Consanguinity in both

The Proteus syndrome: the magnetic resonance and radiological features.

The Proteus syndrome is a recently delineated group of skeletal and mesodermal malformations. Its characteristics include hemihypertrophy and fatty/lymphangiomatous masses. This description outlines the imaging sequences available to the radiologist. It is mainly concerned with the use of magnetic resonance imaging. This shows the extent of the mesodermal malformation with particular reference to the extent of intra abdominal infiltration.

Duplication of hands and feet, multiple joint dislocations, absence of corpus callosum and hypsarrhythmia: acrocallosal syndrome?

We describe a 14-month-old female infant with absence of corpus callosum, atrophy of optic nerve, peculiar face, complex polydactyly, multiple joint abnormalities, and femoral shortness. The similarities to and differences from previously reported cases of this kind suggest that our patient has a new type of acrocallosal syndrome.

[Mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki-syndrome) (author's transl)].

Four cases of acute mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (Kawasaki-Syndrome) are presented This syndrome of yet unknown cause is quite frequent in Japan but lately it is being encountered with growing frequency in Europe, too. The significant clinical and diagnostical features of the disease are laid out and differentialdiagnostical and therapeutical questions are discussed. 1-2% of the children die suddenly or coronary thrombosis. Analogies with infantile polyarteritis nodosa which can be equally lethal and Kawasaki-Syndrome are examined.

[New developments relating to papillomaviruses].

Molecular hybridization technique and immunofluorescence studies with use of specific immune sera against the purified virions isolated from various types of warts and wart-like lesions of epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) made it possible to detect four different types of human papilloma viruses (HPV). The recognition of the viruses is important because of the different morphology of the lesions induced and their various oncogenic potentials. HPV1 is mainly responsible for plantar warts, HPV2 for common (hand) warts, HPV3 has been found both in flat warts and in the variety of EV in which

Understanding Enterovirus 71 Neuropathogenesis and Its Impact on Other Neurotropic Enteroviruses.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) belongs to the species group A in the Enterovirus genus within the Picornaviridae family. EV-A71 usually causes self-limiting hand, foot and mouth disease or herpangina but rarely causes severe neurological complications such as acute flaccid paralysis and encephalomyelitis. The pathology and neuropathogenesis of these neurological syndromes is beginning to be understood. EV-A71 neurotropism for motor neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem, and other neurons, is mainly responsible for central nervous system damage. This review on the general aspects, recent developme

A novel mutation of p63 in a Chinese family with inherited syndactyly and adactylism.

p63 is a transcription factor homologous to p53 and p73; mutations in this gene have been identified in individuals with several types of developmental abnormalities, including EEC (ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, facial clefts) syndrome and split-hand/split-foot malformation (SHFM). Several mutations in the p63 gene have previously been shown to be related to SHFM. In this study, we report on a Chinese family with intrafamilial clinical variability of SHFM that have a novel heterozygous mutation in all four affected individuals. The mutation is in exon 8 of p63, 1046G --> A, which predict

The rash with maculopapules and fever in children.

Several medical conditions can cause children to present with fever and a maculopapular rash Although some presentations are benign, others may be medical emergencies, which warrant a prompt diagnosis. We review some of the more common causes of fever and maculopapular dermatitirs, rash including infectious processes (roseola; rubeola; rubella; parvovirus B19; hand, foot, and mouth disease; scarlet fever; meningococcemia; Epstein-Barr virus infection), hypersensitivity reactions (exanthematous drug reactions), and vasculitis syndromes (Kawasaki disease). We have included a diagnostic algorithm

Top 10 acral skin manifestations associated with COVID-19: A scoping review.

COVID-19-associated cutaneous manifestations are one of the most important and relatively common extra-respiratory presentations of SARS-COV-2 infection. The exact identification and classification of these lesions can facilitate the accurate diagnosis and treatment. There are several case reports and small case series which describe cutaneous lesions in hands and feet. Currently, there is no scoping review about acral skin manifestations associated with COVID-19. This paper covers the COVID-related acral skin manifestations in 10 entities including acral papulo-vesicular eruption, acral urtic

Enterovirus and Human Parechovirus Surveillance - United States, 2009-2013.

Enteroviruses (EVs) and human parechoviruses (HPeVs) are small, non-enveloped RNA viruses in the Picornaviridae family, which are known or suspected to cause a spectrum of clinical manifestations in humans. Although most infected persons are asymptomatic, mild presentations can include respiratory infections, herpangina, and hand, foot, and mouth disease. Among the more severe syndromes associated with EV and HPeV infection are acute flaccid paralysis, meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, and sepsis. Neonates and infants are at higher risk for infection and for severe clinical outcomes than

[The possibility of outbreak control by real-time surveillance with PCR method perfomed immediately--a case study of hand foot and mouth disease outbreak in a day care facility for children].

OBJECT: We examined the relationship between syndromic surveillance and laboratory confirmation, at an early stage of an outbreak of hand foot and mouth disease and RS virus infection. METHOD: We observed the epidemiological situation from a surveillance system at a day care facility for young children in Tokyo from one week before onset of the indicator until one month thereafter. For laboratory diagnosis, we collected a rectal swab or a nasal swab from one patient in the early stage of the outbreak. RESULT: A total of 20 patients, comprising 12 1-year-old, 5 2-year-old and 3 3-year-old chi

Oro-facial-digital syndrome II. Transitional type between the Mohr and the Majewski syndromes: report of two new cases.

Two patients with the oro-facial-digital syndrome II or Mohr syndrome presented laryngeal anomalies and hallucal and postaxial polysyndactyly of the feet. Those rare malformations are typically observed in patients with the Majewski syndrome, a lethal, short rib-polydactyly skeletal dysplasia with orofacial findings almost identical to those of the Mohr syndrome. Phenotypic overlap between the Mohr and the Majewski syndromes has already been reported in the literature, and it has been suggested that the two syndromes may be mild and severe expressions of the same autosomal recessive disorder.

Congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome associated with congenital constriction band syndrome.

We report a 7-year-old boy with congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome and congenital constriction band syndrome. The former is a congenital neurologic syndrome characterized by pseudobulbar palsy, mental retardation, epilepsy, and bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria The latter is a malformative disorder with digital ring constrictions and amputations, probably caused by early amnion rupture resulting in entanglement of fetal parts by amniotic strands. We believe that the combination of these two malfornative disorders was not coincidental; instead, fetal circulatory disturbance related to

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type VI (Váradi syndrome): further clinical delineation.

Cerebellar anomalies are consistent findings in patients with the oral-facial-digital syndrome type VI (Váradi syndrome) in addition to variable facial and oral changes, and polysyndactyly of hands and feet. We report 3 unrelated patients with this entity who have a hypoplastic cerebellar vermis shown by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as clinical signs of cerebellar defect. Polydactyly of the hands is characterized by a central Y-shaped metacarpal. Clinically recurrent episodes of tachypnea and hyperpnea are remarkable. Postnatal growth is delayed with short stature in all 3 patient

The association of split hand foot malformation (SHFM) and congenital heart defects.

BACKGROUND: Split hand foot malformation (SHFM) (cleft hand, central ray deficiency) is a highly variable malformation that shows genetic heterogeneity with at least five loci mapped to date. SHFM occurs as an isolated finding or in association with other anomalies, including congenital heart defects (CHDs). METHODS: In total 48 SHFM1, 52 SHFM3, 48 SHFM4, 21 SHFM5, and four chromosome 8 patients were evaluated. In addition, we performed a literature review to identify "unmapped" SHFM patients with CHD to evaluate the various etiologies of this combination of findings. The London Dysmorphology
