Foxes harbouring E. multilocularis represent an important source for human infection with this parasite which causes alveolar echinococcosis. To minimize the risk of human infection, a control study was conducted to reduce the prevalence of E. multilocularis-infection in foxes in an focal endemic area of 5000 km2. Cataract extraction with a Graefe knife incision was the most important development in cataract surgery during the 19th century. To determine the indications, visual outcome, complications, and problems of cataract surgery performed a century ago, we reviewed patient records from the year 1895. With use of Graefe's technique of cataract extraction, the early postoperative visual acuity was 20/200 or better in 63% and 20/40 or better in 5%. I have interpreted and explained 20 of von Siebold's prescriptions 4 times. Of the 20 prescriptions, 6 were stored at the Siebold's Memorial Museum (questionable 1 was excluded) and 14 at the Municipal Museum of Ohzu City, Ehime Prefecture. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) had graduated in medicine and then he chose the mining town of Jáchymov as the first place for practicing his profession and became the municipal physician and pharmacist there in 1527. There he wrote his first book on mining as well as a comparative study of ancient measures and weights, necessary for correct preparation of medicines according to the recipes of ancient authors. Various outbreaks of Listeria registered in the USA and Europe after eating cheese were the motive to investigate different cheese sorts of the GDR-production on the occurrence of Listeria species. Out of 100 samples of different cheese brands 11 curdled milk cheeses (11%) showed Listeria innocua, an nonpathogenic Listeria species.

Two case reports are given of "spontaneous" hyphaema in the anterior chamber of eye of two elderly women-patients. Haemorrhages as well per diapedesin as per rhexin, possibly by biotropic influence of weather, or possibly also a reflux into Schlemm's canal, too, are discussed for aetiology. There are no pathological laboratory findings.
