Due to improvements in the treatment and medical care of haemophilia, the life expectancy of individuals with haemophilia has approached that of the general population. To review the main co-morbidities of the musculoskeletal system in elderly persons with haemophilia, we have performed a review of the literature on the musculoskeletal problems of elderly haemophiliacs. Chronic arthropathy is the main co-morbidity in the ageing person with haemophilia. Age-related orthopaedic co-morbidities include degenerative joint changes, osteoporosis, muscle atrophy or sarcopenia, muscle weakness and dist…

Background: The process of the globally aging population has been accelerating, leading to an increasing social burden. As people age, the musculoskeletal system will gradually go through a series of degenerative and loss of function and eventually develop age-related musculoskeletal diseases, like sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis. On the other hand, several studies have shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) possess various important physiological functions on the health of muscles, bones, and joints. Objective: This narrative review paper provides a summary of the literat…

Sixty-five percent of pregnant women experience lower extremity musculoskeletal pain and 27 % fall during pregnancy. The risks of pain and falls during pregnancy may be elevated by compensatory gait biomechanics that result from hormonal and musculoskeletal changes like weight gain and postural adjustment. Using markerless motion capture to quantify these unique biomechanics will expand our understanding of the musculoskeletal changes that occur throughout pregnancy and help clinicians manage such risks. We measured gait biomechanics in 46 pregnant patients during early pregnancy (12 weeks), l

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) transpire when injuries to the musculoskeletal system (e.g. muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves) occur due to high fatigue inducing work-related activities, where repetitive movements and muscle strain are prevalent. However, it is challenging to quantify the risk of injury due to the assortment of tasks that factory workers may perform. Nevertheless, wearable sensors are a viable outlet that can unobtrusively capture biometric data in order to calculate objective measures, such as fatigue, which increases the risk of developing WMSDs. This pa…

Marfans syndrome is an Autosomal dominant disorder of the connective tissues resulting in abnormalities of the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system and eyes. It has a prevalence of 1 in 100,000 population1 and occurs in all ethnic groups. It may be familial or due to new mutation (30%), in the fibrillin gene on arm of chromosome 15. It is estimated that one person in every 3000-5000 has Marfans syndrome may have cardiovascular abnormalities and may be complicated by infective endocartditis. About 90% of Marfan patients will develop cardiac complications2. The patient under discussion …

Pregnancy taxes the musculoskeletal system. The enlarging gravid uterus alters the maternal body's center of gravity, mechanically stressing the axial and pelvic systems, and compounds the stresses that hormone level fluctuations and fluid retention exert. While the pregnant woman is prone to many musculoskeletal injuries, most can be controlled conservatively, but some require emergent surgical intervention. This article describes pregnancy-related orthopedic problems and related conditions, and discusses their pathogenesis, signs, symptoms, physical examination findings, diagnostic work-up, …

Musculoskeletal infections consist of different clinical conditions that are commonly encountered in daily clinical settings. As clinical findings and even laboratory tests cannot always be specific, imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of these cases. Musculoskeletal infections most commonly occur secondary to direct inoculation into the skin involuntarily affected by trauma, microorganism, foreign bodies, or in diabetic ulcers; direct infections can also occur from voluntary causes due to surgery, vaccinations, or other iatrogenic procedures. Hematogenous spread of inf

Pediatric musculoskeletal system is particularly prone to traumatic and sports-related injuries, both acute and chronic, i.e., overuse injuries, because of inherent conditions of weakness, such as the open physis, representing the weakest aspect within the bone, the ligamentous supports and changing biomechanics. Being aware that a quick diagnosis is essential to preserve the good functionality of the limb involved, it is mandatory for the radiologist to recognize the most common patterns of these injuries, identifying those requiring a prompt surgery, as well as be confident with the techniqu…

A review of 58 children with gastroschisis and 8 children with omphalocele showed 14 musculoskeletal problems in 11 children. These problems consisted of limb deformities in 6 children, spinal deformities in 4 children, and osteopenia in 3 children, with 1 of the osteopenic children developing pathological fractures. About one third (5/14) of the problems were arthrogrypotic in nature. The remainder were mild digital deformities, developmental or spondylodysplastic scolioses, and, rarely, congenital spinal deformities.

Mobility impairments associated with musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease, affect approximately 200,000 dogs annually and pose a notable challenge to canine health and welfare. Osteoarthritis causes the remodelling of synovial joints, alongside inflammation and impaired mechanical function which can be extremely debilitating. Secondary osteoarthritis commonly affects dogs and can be exacerbated by previous joint abnormalities, such as patellar luxation or cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Although musculoskeletal diseases can affect dogs of any age,

The tissues removed in the surgical treatment of nonneoplastic musculoskeletal diseases represent the most frequent source of surgical pathology specimens in bone and soft tissue pathology. The pathologic changes in these specimens are often not appreciated because of the lack of familiarity with the pathophysiology of the disorders, the mechanisms in which they affect tissue, and their morphologic expressions. In this review, we highlight the important diagnostic features of selecting common nonneoplastic diseases of the musculoskeletal system that cause significant disability and morbidity.

The current childhood obesity epidemic, affecting approximately 20% of American children and adolescents, is accompanied by unique orthopedic manifestations. The growing musculoskeletal system is susceptible to the endocrine effects of obesity, resulting in decreased bone mass and quality. As a result, obese children are at increased risk of musculoskeletal injury, fracture, and lower extremity deformities. The efficacy of nonoperative treatment such as casting or bracing may be limited by body habitus and surgical treatment is accompanied by increased risk of perioperative complications.

The review focuses primarily on collating and analyzing the mechanistic research data that discusses the function of prebiotics to halt the frailty of musculoskeletal system. Musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs) are frequently reported to co-occur within their own categories of conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis owing to their overlapping pathogenesis. Consequently, the same drugs are often used to manage the complications of most types. A few recent studies have addressed the therapeutic functions of gut microbes toward those commonly…

It is generally accepted that the maintenance of the health of the musculoskeletal system is highly dependent on vitamin D. However, the relationship between vitamin D levels and the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries is still uncertain. This systematic review aimed to summarize the available information on the association between vitamin D levels and musculoskeletal injuries. Seven electronic databases were searched using Boolean operators to link MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms and free text phrases. This improved the sensitivity and specificity of the search results. Studies invest…

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are considered a growing problem among healthcare personnel, especially service workers. The emergency room (ER) service workers are highly exposed to work-related risk factors which predispose them to MSDs. A cross-sectional study was performed on 78 ER workers. Full medical and occupational histories were taken. The Standardized Nordic Questionnaire (SNQ) was used for the assessment of musculoskeletal symptoms. Clinical examination was done with special emphasis on the locomotors system, and serum levels of muscle enzymes, including creatine kinase (CK) and c
