Evaluation of the success rate of single- and dual-thread orthodontic miniscrews inserted in the palatal side of the maxillary tuberosity.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported that the placement of miniscrews for orthodontic anchorage in maxillary tuberosity is anatomically safe and can aid in achieving efficient tooth movement mechanically. However, the success rate of miniscrews placed on the palatal aspect of the maxillary tuberosity has not yet been elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the success rate of single- and dual-thread miniscrews inserted in the palatal aspect of the maxillary tuberosity. METHODS: A total of 101 miniscrews (17 single-thread miniscrews: diameter 2.0 mm, length 10 mm; 84 dual-thread miniscrew

Sialocele of Submandibular Gland, an Unreported Complication of Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy.

Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy is a routine procedure with predictable and well-known complications. The authors report a thitherto unreported complication of bilateral sagittal split osteotomy presenting as a postoperative sialocele of submandibular salivary gland tissue in the floor of the mouth. The sialocele was probably caused by overinstrumentation and injury to sublingual salivary tissues or Wharton's duct during bicortical drilling or screw fixation. This iatrogenic sialocele was managed conservatively with multiple aspiration and compression dressings. Although rare and unreported

Finite element analysis of necessity of reduction and selection of internal fixation for valgus-impacted femoral neck fracture.

This study compared the biomechanical characteristics of different treatment strategies based on finite element analysis. Posterior tilt and valgus angle were measured on X-ray from ten valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures, and 7 finite element models that were generated to compare the stress and displacement. The results showed that in the intact femur, von Mises stress was concentrated at the medial and inferior sides of the femoral neck. In valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures, von Mises stress was at the same locations but was 5.66 times higher than that in the intact femur. When 3 can

Comparison of the Susceptibility to Implant Failure in the Lateral, Posterior, and Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Finite Element Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: There are several techniques for lumbar interbody fusion, and implant failure following lumbar interbody fusion can be troublesome. This study aimed to compare the stress in posterior implant and peri-screw vertebral bodies among lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF), posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) and to select the technique that is least likely to cause implant failure. METHODS: We created an intact L3-L5 model and simulated the LLIF, PLIF, and TLIF techniques at L4-L5 using finite element methods. All models at the lo

Continuous Rod Load Monitoring to Assess Spinal Fusion Status-Pilot In Vivo Data in Sheep.

Background and Objectives: Spinal fusion is an effective and widely accepted intervention. However, complications such as non-unions and hardware failures are frequently observed. Radiologic imaging and physical examination are still the gold standards in the assessment of spinal fusion, despite multiple limitations including radiation exposure and subjective image interpretation. Furthermore, current diagnostic methods only allow fusion assessment at certain time points and require the patient's presence at the hospital or medical practice. A recently introduced implantable sensor system for

S2-Alar-iliac screw fixation for paediatric neuromuscular scoliosis: Preliminary results after two years.

BACKGROUND: Correcting pelvic obliquity is among the main goals of surgery for neuromuscular scoliosis. Spino-pelvic fixation must be stable and capable of withstanding the considerable mechanical forces applied at the lumbo-sacral junction. Selection of the best anchoring option is therefore crucial. S2-alar-iliac (S2AI) screws, which are used in adults, are less often chosen in the French paediatric spinal-surgery community. The objective of this study was to report our preliminary experience with S2AI screws used in the treatment of paediatric patients with neuromuscular scoliosis. HYPOTHE
