Folded bandage contact lens retention in a patient with bilateral dry eye symptoms: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bandage contact lenses are commonly used by ophthalmic practitioners to protect the patient's cornea. We report a case of folded bandage contact lens retained for six and a half years in the upper subtarsal space. To our knowledge, no other cases of retained bandage contact lens have previously been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A patient was applied a pair of bandage contact lenses due to persistent ocular pain secondary to dry eye symptoms. At her subsequent visit, bandage contact lens was removed from her left eye, but none was found in the right eye. Documenta

Effect of Single-Use, Laser-Cut, Slow-Flow Nipples on Respiration and Milk Ingestion in Preterm Infants.

PURPOSE: Single-use, laser-cut, slow-flow nipples were evaluated for their effect on respiration and milk ingestion in 13 healthy preterm infants (32.7-37.1 weeks postmenstrual age) under nonlaboratory, clinical conditions. METHOD: The primary outcomes of minute ventilation and overall milk transfer were measured by using integrated nasal airflow and volume-calibrated bottles during suck bursts and suck burst breaks during slow-flow and standard-flow nipple bottle feedings. Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests were used to test the effect of nipple type on both outcomes. RESULTS: Prefeeding minute ve

Selective Heart, Brain and Body Perfusion in Open Aortic Arch Replacement.

Open aortic arch replacement is a complex and challenging procedure, especially in post dissection aneurysms and in redo procedures after previous surgery of the ascending aorta or aortic root. We report our experience with the simultaneous selective perfusion of heart, brain, and remaining body to ensure optimal perfusion and to minimize perfusion-related risks during these procedures. We used a specially configured heart-lung machine with a centrifugal pump as arterial pump and an additional roller pump for the selective cerebral perfusion. Initial arterial cannulation is achieved via femora

Kinesthetic Feedback During 2DOF Wrist Movements via a Novel MR-Compatible Robot.

We demonstrate the interaction control capabilities of the MR-SoftWrist, a novel MR-compatible robot capable of applying accurate kinesthetic feedback to wrist pointing movements executed during fMRI. The MR-SoftWrist, based on a novel design that combines parallel piezoelectric actuation with compliant force feedback, is capable of delivering 1.5 N [Formula: see text] of torque to the wrist of an interacting subject about the flexion/extension and radial/ulnar deviation axes. The robot workspace, defined by admissible wrist rotation angles, fully includes a circle with a 20 deg radius. Via dy

Estimation of Finger Joint Angles Based on Electromechanical Sensing of Wrist Shape.

An approach to finger motion capture that places fewer restrictions on the usage environment and actions of the user is an important research topic in biomechanics and human-computer interaction. We proposed a system that electrically detects finger motion from the associated deformation of the wrist and estimates the finger joint angles using multiple regression models. A wrist-mounted sensing device with 16 electrodes detects deformation of the wrist from changes in electrical contact resistance at the skin. In this study, we experimentally investigated the accuracy of finger joint angle est

Air Ambient-Operated pNIPAM-Based Flexible Actuators Stimulated by Human Body Temperature and Sunlight.

Harnessing a natural power source such as the human body temperature or sunlight should realize ultimate low-power devices. In particular, macroscale and flexible actuators that do not require an artificial power source have tremendous potential. Here we propose and demonstrate electrically powerless polymer-based actuators operated at ambient conditions using a packaging technique in which the stimulating power source is produced by heat from the human body or sunlight. The actuating angle, force, and reliability are discussed as functions of temperature and exposure to sunlight. Furthermore,

The microwell-mesh: A novel device and protocol for the high throughput manufacturing of cartilage microtissues.

Microwell platforms are frequently described for the efficient and uniform manufacture of 3-dimensional (3D) multicellular microtissues. Multiple partial or complete medium exchanges can displace microtissues from discrete microwells, and this can result in either the loss of microtissues from culture, or microtissue amalgamation when displaced microtissues fall into common microwells. Herein we describe the first microwell platform that incorporates a mesh to retain microtissues within discrete microwells; the microwell-mesh. We show that bonding a nylon mesh with an appropriate pore size ove

Effects of polycaprolactone-based scaffolds on the blood-brain barrier and cerebral inflammation.

Severe pathoanatomical and mechanical injuries compromise patient recovery and survival following penetrating brain injury (PBI). The realization that the blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays a major role in dictating post-PBI events has led to rising interests in possible therapeutic interventions through the BBB. Recently, the choroid plexus has also been suggested as a potential therapeutic target. The use of biocompatible scaffolds for the delivery of therapeutic agents, but little is known about their interaction with cerebral tissue, which has important clinical implications. Therefore, the a

Minimizing Stimulus Current in a Wearable Pudendal Nerve Stimulator Using Computational Models.

After spinal cord injury, functions of the lower urinary tract may be disrupted. A wearable device with surface electrodes which can effectively control the bladder functions would be highly beneficial to the patients. A trans-rectal pudendal nerve stimulator may provide such a solution. However, the major limiting factor in such a stimulator is the high level of current it requires to recruit the nerve fibers. Also, the variability of the trajectory of the nerve in different individuals should be considered. Using computational models and an approximate trajectory of the nerve derived from an

The mechanical behavior and biocompatibility of polymer blends for Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) occlusion device.

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a cardiovascular defect that occurs in 1 out of every 2000 births, and if left untreated, may lead to severe cardiovascular problems. Current options for occluding utilize meta scaffolds with polymer fabric, and are permanent. The purpose of this study was to develop a fully degradable occluder for the closure of PDA, that can be deployed percutaneously without open-heart surgery. For percutaneous deployment, both elasticity and sufficient mechanical strength are required of the device components. As this combination of properties is not achievable with curren

Positional plagiocephaly: experience with a passive orthotic mattress.

Positional plagiocephaly (deformational or occipital plagiocephaly) is the most common head-shape deformity, which is presented to specialist craniofacial units. The aim of management is to reduce pressure on the affected area in the expectation that brain growth will drive normalization of the head shape. Current management includes a variety of protocols based on repositioning advice or helmet orthotics. The aim of this study is to document changes in head shape associated with use of a passive orthotic mattress for the management of positional plagiocephaly of a series of 30 patients at Ald

Therapeutic intraspinal microstimulation improves forelimb function after cervical contusion injury.

OBJECTIVE: Intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS) is a promising method for activating the spinal cord distal to an injury. The objectives of this study were to examine the ability of chronically implanted stimulating wires within the cervical spinal cord to (1) directly produce forelimb movements, and (2) assess whether ISMS stimulation could improve subsequent volitional control of paretic extremities following injury. APPROACH: We developed a technique for implanting intraspinal stimulating electrodes within the cervical spinal cord segments C6-T1 of Long-Evans rats. Beginning 4 weeks after a

Coblation technology for surgical wound debridement: principle, experimental data, and technical data.

Debridement is required to prepare the wound bed, essentially in removing undesired tissues observed both in acute wound after burns or trauma and in chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, leg ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers. Surgical debridement has been described as one of the most effective methods but can be contraindicated in the elderly, arteriopathic context, or patients under effective anticoagulation. Recently described debridement technologies are based on application of important mechanical severing forces over the wound surface using high-power hydrojets. High water flux acts as

Finite state control of a variable impedance hybrid neuroprosthesis for locomotion after paralysis.

We have previously reported on a novel variable impedance knee mechanism (VIKM). The VIKM was designed as a component of a hybrid neuroprosthesis to regulate knee flexion. The hybrid neuroprosthesis is a device that uses a controllable brace to support the body against collapse while stimulation provides power for movement. The hybrid neuroprosthesis requires a control system to coordinate the actions of the VIKM with the stimulation system; the development and evaluation of such a controller is presented. Brace mounted sensors and a baseline open loop stimulation pattern are utilized as contr

Avoidance of aortic side-clamping for proximal bypass anastomoses: better short-term outcome?

OBJECTIVES: The benefit of off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery may be reduced by strokes caused by microemboli produced after aortic side-clamping for proximal bypass anastomoses. The Heartstring device allows constructing proximal bypass anastomoses without side-clamping of the aorta. METHODS: This retrospective study describes 260 consecutive patients who underwent OPCAB surgery; 442 proximal anastomoses were performed with the Heartstring device in this series. Ten percent of the patients were randomly sampled before discharge to undergo a coronary angiogram for assessment of g
