Submersible voltammetric sensing probe for rapid and extended remote monitoring of opioids in community water systems.

The intensifying global opioid crisis, majorly attributed to fentanyl (FT) and its analogs, has necessitated the development of rapid and ultrasensitive remote/on-site FT sensing modalities. However, current approaches for tracking FT exposure through wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) are unadaptable, time-consuming, and require trained professionals. Toward developing an extended in situ wastewater opioid monitoring system, we have developed a screen-printed electrochemical FT sensor and integrated it with a customized submersible remote sensing probe. The sensor composition and design have

Melt electrowriting of poly(ϵ-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol) backbone polymer blend scaffolds with improved hydrophilicity and functionality.

Melt electrowriting (MEW) is an additive manufacturing technique that harnesses electro-hydrodynamic phenomena to produce 3D-printed fibres with diameters on the scale of 10s of microns. The ability to print at this small scale provides opportunities to create structures with incredibly fine resolution and highly defined morphology. The current gold standard material for MEW is poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL), a polymer with excellent biocompatibility but lacking in chemical groups that can allow intrinsic additional functionality. To provide this functionality while maintaining PCL's positive attr

Case Report: Facial fracture sequelae: the importance of using a specific customized implant (PSI) for orbital reconstruction.

The reconstruction of orbital fracture sequelae is a major challenge due to concerns regarding surgical approach and implant stability. Few anatomical sites of such minute size have presented with as much variation in treatment as the orbital floor fractures and related sequelae. Our patient developed sequelae of an orbital fracture over the last 3 years, presenting with dystopia, ophthalmoplegia, and diplopia in the supra- and lateroversion and aesthetic impairment. The variety of implant materials for reconstruction after orbital fractures is extensive, and the decision as to which material

Regenerative Engineering of a Biphasic Patient-Fitted Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Prosthesis.

Regenerative medicine approaches to restore the mandibular condyle of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may fill an unmet patient need. In this study, a method to implant an acellular regenerative TMJ prosthesis was developed for orthotopic implantation in a pilot goat study. The scaffold incorporated a porous, polycaprolactone-hydroxyapatite (PCL-HAp, 20wt% HAp) 3D printed condyle with a cartilage-matrix-containing hydrogel. A series of material characterizations was used to determine the structure, fluid transport, and mechanical properties of 3D printed PCL-HAp. To promote marrow uptake for

Ultrasound-controlled nano oxygen carriers enhancing cell viability in 3D GelMA hydrogel for the treatment of myocardial infarction.

Heart failure is a critical and ultimate phase of cardiovascular ailment that leads to a considerable incidence of disability and mortality. Among various factors contributing to heart failure, myocardial infarction is one of the most frequent and significant causes, which is still difficult to manage effectively. An innovative therapeutic strategy, namely a 3D bio-printed cardiac patch, has recently emerged as a promising approach to substitute damaged cardiomyocytes in a localized infarct region. Nevertheless, the efficacy of this treatment primarily relies on the long-term viability of the

Robotic external ventricular drain placement for acute neurosurgical care in low-resource settings: feasibility considerations and a prototype design.

OBJECTIVE: Emergency neurosurgical care in lower-middle-income countries faces pronounced shortages in neurosurgical personnel and infrastructure. In instances of traumatic brain injury (TBI), hydrocephalus, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, the timely placement of external ventricular drains (EVDs) strongly dictates prognosis and can provide necessary stabilization before transfer to a higher-level center of care that has access to neurosurgery. Accordingly, the authors have developed an inexpensive and portable robotic navigation tool to allow surgeons who do not have explicit neurosurgical train

Correction of Midface Deficiency in Patient With Crouzon Syndrome by Orthognathic Surgery and Patient Specific Facial Implant: Case Report.

Crouzon syndrome, also known as craniofacial dysostosis, is an autosomal dominant inherited disease characterized by early cranial fusion and consequential craniofacial malformations. In patients with Crouzon syndrome, the growth of the midface is affected due to early fusion of the cranial base, which results in exophthalmos, ocular ptosis, midface deficiency, and maxillary retrognathism. Frontofacial advancement using Le Fort III osteotomy is the conventional method for treating patients with Crouzon syndrome. However, this procedure has drawbacks such as extensive operation field and high p

Pedicle screw placement safety with the aid of patient-specific guides in a case series of patients with thoracic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Pedicle screw (PS) placement in thoracic scoliotic deformities can be challenging due to altered vertebral anatomy; malposition can result in severe functional disability or inferior construct stability. Three-dimensional (3D) printed patient-specific guides (PSGs) have been recently used to supplement other PS placement techniques. We conducted a single-center, retrospective observational study to assess the accuracy of PS placement using PSGs in a consecutive case series of pediatric and adult patients with thoracic scoliosis. METHODS: We analyzed the data of patients with thoracic

Right ventricular afterload in repaired D-TGA is associated with inefficient flow patterns, rather than stenosis alone.

Treatment of D- transposition of great arteries (DTGA) involves the Arterial Switch Operation (ASO), which can create PA branch stenosis (PABS) and alter PA blood flow energetics. This altered PA flow may contribute to elevated right ventricular (RV) afterload more significantly than stenosis alone. Our aim was to correlate RV afterload and PA flow characteristics using 4D flow cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging of a mock circulatory system (MCS) incorporating 3D printed replicas. CMR imaging and clinical characteristics were analyzed from 22 ASO patients (age 11.9 ± 8.7 years, 68% male)

Creation of 3D anatomical models illustrating an intact and centrally torn triangular fibrocartilage complex for patient education prior treatment.

BACKGROUND: The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a composite structure located in the human wrist and is made up from fibrocartilage and ligaments. It consists of eight distinct structures, with the ligamentous structures acting as the major stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint and with the articular disc acting as a shock absorber at the ulnocarpal joint. The articular disc can be called the triangular fibrocartilage (TFC). Thus, traumatic injuries of the TFCC ligamentous structures cause instability of the joint and a centrally torn TFC disc causes ulnar sided wrist pain. TFC

The benefits of carbon black, gold and magnetic nanomaterials for point-of-harvest electrochemical quantification of domoic acid.

Gold nanostars (GNST), gold nanospheres (GNP) and carbon black (CB) are chosen as alternative nanomaterials to modify carbon screen-printed electrodes (c-SPEs). The resulting three kinds of modified c-SPEs (GNP-SPE, CB-SPE and GNSP-SPE) were electrochemically and microscopically characterized and compared with standardized c-SPEs after pretreatment with phosphate buffer by pre-anodization (pre-SPE). The results show outstanding electrochemical performance of the carbon black-modified SPEs which show low transient current, low capacitance and good porosity. A competitive chronoamperometric immu

Fabrication and evaluation of a chitin whisker/poly(L-lactide) composite scaffold by the direct trisolvent-ink writing method for bone tissue engineering.

Although poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) based porous scaffolds have been widely fabricated through 3D printing, their poor mechanical properties and osteogenic activity still do not meet the needs of bone tissue repair. Herein, chitin whiskers (CHWs), having outstanding mechanical properties, excellent cell affinity, osteogenic activity, etc. were designed to introduce into the PLLA matrix. Moreover, a trisolvent system, including dichloromethane (DCM), 2-butoxyethanlol (2-Bu) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), instead of a single solvent system of DCM was chosen to prepare CHW/PLLA (CP) composite inks.
