Plant trash in linters and willowed picker: materials used in the cotton garnetting industry.

First cut linters and willowed picker, used in cotton garnetting, were examined for content of cotton bract an other plant trash. Bract was found to be a minimal contaminant of the trash of first cut linters. A significant amount of bract (about 9% of the trash) was present in willowed picker. Cotton seed hulls, a valuable oil mill by product, contained an insignificant amount of bract trash.

In vivo detection of pathologic α- synuclein and TDP-43 in the skin and olfactory mucosa of a patient with Parkinson's disease-like phenotype carrying the p.Thr272Serfs*10 GRN mutation.

We describe a patient carrying the GRN p.Thr272Serfs*10 mutation, who presented with parkinsonism at onset and later developed prodromal frontotemporal dementia, in whom seed amplification assay on olfactory mucosa and skin analyses suggest mixed TDP-43 and α-synuclein co-pathology, highlighting how combining these techniques could provide a comprehensive approach to investigate the underlying neuropathological process.

Aorto-bronchial fistula masquerading as haematemesis: a rare late complication of thoracic aortic vascular grafts.

Aorto-bronchial fistula is an exceedingly rare pathology with high mortality. Late vascular graft infection may occur secondary to haematogenous seeding of bacteria from a distant source such as gastrointestinal infection. We present an unusual case of aorto-bronchial fistula masquerading as haematemesis in a patient with sigmoid diverticulitis, and review the pathophysiology, diagnosis, surgical and endovascular management of aorto-bronchial fistulas.

Novel Approach to Tracking Mutant Huntingtin in Biosamples.

Although the established causative agent in Huntington's disease (HD) is a mutation in a single gene encoding huntingtin protein, the pathogenic cascade preceding neuronal death and disease onset is both incompletely understood and clinically undetectable. A new article published in Molecular Cell explores mutant huntingtin (mHtt) aggregate seeding activity as an early pathogenesis-tracking parameter with potential biomarker quality.

Fatal septic complication of transcatheter chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma.

A patient with hepatocellular carcinoma, associated segmental portal vein thrombosis, and accompanying pneumobilia, developed a liver abscess and sepsis following transcatheter chemoembolization (TCE). It was believed that the combination of bile duct necrosis after arterial occlusion and pneumobilia led to ascending enteric infection and seeding of the necrotic tumor, which ultimately led to fatal outcome. We conclude that TCE is contraindicated in such cases.

The primordial cyst (odontogenic keratocyst): its tumour-like characteristics and behaviour.

The clinical behaviour of primordial cysts frequently mimics that of benign tumours. They are characterised by aggressive growth and a tendency to recur following surgical treatment. Displacement of teeth, resorption of the roots of teeth, 'seeding' of the cyst into soft tissue and pathological fracture of the mandible exemplify this behaviour. These features are described and fully illustrated by examples from a series of 60 cases. The results of various surgical procedures are evaluated.

Dual-crosslinked chitosan nanofibres - Balancing mechanical enhancement with cytotoxic risk.

This study evaluated the effects of dual-crosslinking strategies on the mechanical performance and biocompatibility of chitosan-norbornene (Chi-NB) nanofibres for tissue reconstruction. Chi-NB, bearing 28.6 ± 1.4 mol% alkene groups, was processed into nanofibres via solution blow spinning. Dual crosslinking was conducted by photo-initiated thiol-ene crosslinking with dithiothreitol (DTT), achieving >95% norbornene conversion with minimal thiol oxidation, followed by exposure to tannic acid (TA). Structural and chemical validation was performed using SEM, NMR, XPS, FT-IR, and tensile testing. I

PIK3CB depletion restores immunosurveillance and enhances radioactive iodine response in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a high incidence and mortality rate despite the existence of various treatments, including iodine-125 (125I) seed implantation. Nevertheless, resistance to these treatments persists as a challenge. Here, we identified PIK3CB as a key molecule involved in the nonresponse to 125I and immune evasion in HCC and expounded its upstream modifiers. Differentially expressed genes in HCC tissues of 125I non-responders or responders were screened using transcriptomics sequencing. PIK3CB expression was increased in the tumors of HCC 125I non-responders. PIK3CB knockout i

Natural variation in the OsAFB2 promoter enhances rice seedling emergence under submergence.

Seedling emergence is a key adaptive trait for water direct-seeded rice, yet its genetic basis remains poorly understood and elite alleles are limited. Here, a genome-wide association study of 307 rice accessions identifies qSLS4, a locus controlling shoot elongation during seedling emergence under submergence. OsAFB2 encodes an auxin receptor and is the causal gene for qSLS4. Its knockout promotes shoot elongation by increasing cell length and cell number, thereby improving seedling emergence rather than promoting coleoptile elongation, and also reduces plant height with only a minor effect o

Multi-omics profiling unravels the synergistic roles of defence priming and metabolic remodeling in wheat waterlogging tolerance.

Waterlogging severely restricts wheat seed germination and seedling growth, but the underlying tolerance mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using two tolerant (T1, T2) and two sensitive (S1, S2) wheat genotypes, we analyzed phenotypic, physiological, metabolic and transcriptional responses to waterlogging stress. Tolerant genotypes maintained high seed viability and germination rate and showed accelerated seedling growth after waterlogging, whereas sensitive genotypes suffered severe germination inhibition and loss of embryo viability. Tolerant genotypes exhibited more stable antioxidant enz

Rectangular Augmented Row-Column Designs Generated From Contractions.

Row-column designs play an important role in applications where two orthogonal sources of error need to be controlled for by blocking. Field or greenhouse experiments, in which experimental units are arranged as a rectangular array of experimental units, are a prominent example. In plant breeding, the amount of seed available for the treatments to be tested may be so limited that only one experimental unit per treatment can be accommodated. In such settings, augmented designs become an interesting option, where a small set of treatments, for which sufficient seed is available, is replicated ac

Host Response Impairs Tissue Integration of a Fibrin Hydrogel Scaffold Containing Poly(ε-caprolactone) Nanofibers for Peripheral Nerve Repair.

The development of bioengineered conduits for the repair of large peripheral nerve defects remains challenging. Here, we introduce a biomimetic fibrin hydrogel scaffold containing stacked arrays of aligned poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers that mimics the naturally forming fibrin cable seen in transection injuries. We further evaluated the additional encapsulation of Schwann cells (SCs) into the fibrin hydrogel. Nerve regeneration was examined in a 15 mm rat sciatic nerve resection model over a period of 12 weeks, comparing our scaffolds against the autograft, a collagen hollow tube, and a

The role of microglia in the prion-like transmission of protein aggregates in neurodegeneration.

Numerous neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis share a neuropathological hallmark: aberrant protein aggregation in the CNS. Microglia, the brain's innate immune cells, also play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Multiple studies indicate that these pathological aggregates can propagate throughout the brain in a prion-like manner. A protein/peptide that adopts a prion-like conformation can induce homologous proteins to misfold into a prion-like conformation through templated seeding, enabling cell-to-ce

Cortical functional connectivity changes in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is characterized by episodic memory deficits and is defined as the prodromal phase of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, it is critical to reveal the dysfunction in large-scale networks during the dementia phase of the disease. This study aimed to examine the resting-state functional connectivity changes between aMCI and healthy control groups. METHODS: MRI and clinical data from 25 individuals with aMCI and 25 healthy controls (HC) were used. Seed-to-seed functional connectivity analyses were performed between all histologically classified Br

Techno-Functional, Antioxidant, and Sorption Properties of Dietary Fiber Concentrates from Guamuchil (Pithecellobium dulce).

Guamuchil (Pithecellobium dulce) is an underutilized legume with significant potential as a food ingredient. This study valorized guamuchil fractions (pulp, peel, and seed) by developing dietary fiber concentrates (DFC) and evaluating their physicochemical, techno-functional, and antioxidant properties using a single-factor completely randomized design. Proximate composition and dietary fiber profiles (2011.25) were analyzed following AOAC official methodologies. Results showed the peel fraction contained the highest total dietary fiber (64.16 ± 1.23 g 100 g-1 dry basis (db)) and total phenoli

Enabling the study of gene function in gymnosperms: Virus-induced gene silencing in Ephedra tweedieana.

PREMISE: As the sister clade to angiosperms, extant gymnosperms are crucial for reconstructing ancestral gene regulatory networks in seed plants. This highlights the need for model systems representing each of their distinct lineages. However, tools to quickly and effectively investigate gene function in gymnosperms are still limited due to the challenges of long life cycles and large genome sizes. Species within the xerophytic genus Ephedra (Gnetales) have comparatively smaller genomes and shrubby growth habits with shorter life spans, making them better suited for greenhouse cultivation and

Plant Growth-Promoting Potential of Colletotrichum sp. Isolated from Ocimum basilicum L. Leaves: A Broad-Spectrum Evaluation.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the growth-promoting potential of Colletotrichum sp. as a broad-spectrum plant inoculant and to investigate its applicability beyond its natural host range. Out of ten endophytes isolated from Ocimum basilicum, only four were reported for IAA production and among them, Colletotrichum sp. was chosen for further investigation due to its higher IAA production. Highest production of IAA was observed by providing Czapek dox broth with dextrose as carbon source, ammonium sulphate as nitrogen source at pH 7 and 32 °C. The crude fungal extract from Col

A multicenter cross-sectional study to elucidate altered resting-state functional connectivity of the insular cortex in anorexia nervosa, segmented by functional localization.

Although changes in insular function have been thought to play a central role in the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa (AN), due to factors such as insufficient sample size, there have been no studies examining changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between insula and whole brain in AN, based on functional localization of insula. Here, we subdivided insula into 6 regions per side based on functional localization and reanalyzed previously published functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 114 female patients with AN and 135 female healthy controls (HC). We calculated t

Does a SPR-Based Cell-Based Assay Provide Reliable Results on the Toxicity and Efficacy of Antiviral Drugs?

SPR has been recently established as a powerful tool for studying various cellular processes in real time and without the use of labeling agents. So far, all studies in this area have been performed using the Kretschmann method for SPR excitation. In our studies, we used grating-based SPR. Here, we investigated the feasibility of this approach in a cell-based assay applied for antiviral drug screening. It was found that the continuous-flow SPR detection used in the conventional SPR can be replaced by sequential signal measurements of SPR slides removed from the medium at fixed hours after seed

Brief Primer on the Discovery of New Antifungal Drugs from Plant Sources.

RATIONALE: The antifungal armamentarium is shrinking while resistance to licensed agents rises. Historically, actinomycetes and fungi delivered nystatin, amphotericin B, griseofulvin and the echinocandin scaffold, yet plant-derived compounds-despite potent in-vitro activity-have rarely reached the clinic. OBJECTIVE: To frame the recent in-vivo success of papaya-seed essential oil against fluconazole-sensitive and -resistant Candida albicans within the broader context of plant-based antifungal discovery, and to propose rigorous criteria that can accelerate translation, especially considering v
