Novel findings in a patient with Weaver or a Weaver-like syndrome.

We report on a young male patient with an overgrowth syndrome, who had normal birth weight. He had a number of manifestations typical of the Weaver syndrome (WS), such as advanced bone age, peculiar craniofacial appearance, and camptodactyly. He also showed severe mental and speech retardation and demineralisation of the bones of the hands and feet. The latter can be considered as unreported manifestations of WS, or the patient could represent an example of a new WS-like syndrome.

Ulcerative and oral lichen planus associated with sicca syndrome and primary biliary cirrhosis.

The following case report supports the hypothesis that the coexistence of lichen planus, primary biliary cirrhosis, and sicca syndrome is not co-incidental. The fact that all three diseases are manifest in the same patient substantiates a theory of pathogenesis based on a cell-mediated immune response analogous to that in allogeneic bone marrow transplant recipients with chronic graft-versus-host disease.

Prenatal transvaginal diagnosis of the ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, cleft palate (EEC) syndrome.

Transvaginal ultrasonography performed at 14 weeks' gestation demonstrated a bilateral cleft lip and lobster-claw deformities of the hands and feet, in keeping with the diagnosis of EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly or lobster-claw deformity, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft lip and palate). The fetus was aborted and the diagnosis of EEC syndrome was confirmed.

A morphological and family study on isolated terminal transverse type of congenital limb deficiency in Hungary, 1975-1984.

A population-based and validated data set of 195 cases with isolated terminal transverse-type congenital limb deficiency was evaluated in Hungary, 1975-1984. Terminal transverse types of congenital limb deficiency are not usually associated with non-limb defects, and typically only one limb is affected. Upper limb is more frequently affected than lower (9:1) in monomelic cases. The left side and females are affected more often in upper limbs while lower limb defects are evenly distributed between right and left sides and both sexes. Familial occurrence was not found.

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome: the changing phenotype with age.

In this report we present follow up data of two brothers with Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome. The changes with ageing are striking and few of the typical SLO traits are still present, which makes it extremely difficult to make the diagnosis Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome at adult age.

[Proteus syndrome. A contribution to the further differential diagnosis of congenital local gigantism].

Four sporadically occurring characteristic cases of the Proteus syndrome are described. All patients show the main features of the disease, consisting of hemihypertrophy, partial gigantism of hands and/or feet with soft-tissue hypertrophy, plane naevi, subcutaneous tumours, and cranial anomalies. There is a remarkable polymorphism of the symptoms. Anamnestic, clinical and paraclinical findings are shown in tables. Based on a survey of the literature, the main aspects of genetics and of differential diagnosis are discussed.

An autosomal dominant syndrome of short stature with mesomelic shortness of limbs, abnormal carpal and tarsal bones, hypoplastic middle phalanges, and bipartite calcanei.

This paper describes seven persons in a family affected with an autosomal dominant syndrome of short stature with mesomelic shortness of upper and lower limbs, abnormal carpal and tarsal bones, hypoplastic or absent middle phalanges of hands and feet, and delayed coalescence of bipartite calcanei. All affected relatives are of normal intelligence, are free of eye problems, and have a normal skull, spine, shoulders, and hips. The digits of the hands and feet are short, broad, and angulated. The hypoplastic or absent middle phalanges effectively result in one interphalangeal joint for each digit

Relationship between hand-foot skin reaction and external force on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: A cohort study.

PURPOSE: Hand-foot skin reaction (HFSR), a side effect of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment, makes it difficult to walk and perform daily activities because of pain in the limbs. HFSR occurs predominantly in the sites where external forces (pressure and shear stress) are applied. This study aimed to determine whether pressure or shear stress induces the occurrence of HFSR. METHODS: This cohort study was conducted in patients who received TKI treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. The external forces applied to the sole of the patients' foot while walking was measured, and its associa

Docetaxel-induced palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome and long-lasting multiple nail changes.

Palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome (PPES) and nail changes are common presentations of cutaneous toxicity of docetaxel chemotherapy, which deteriorate the quality of life of patients. Herein, we describe a female patient who developed PPES and multiple nail changes due to docetaxel treatment for infiltrative ductal carcinoma. Cold application and elevation of extremities during docetaxel infusion, potent topical steroids and oral pyridoxine increased the tolerance to chemotherapy and provided regression of painful cutaneous lesions without cessation of the treatment.

Short stature, ulnar deviation of hands with absent carpals and joint contractures: a new syndrome.

We report on a case of short stature with facial dysmorphism, ulnar deviation of hands and joint contractures. The X-rays of hands showed dislocation of the distal end of the radius and growth of the radius over the head of the ulna with total absence of carpal bones and hypoplastic tarsal bones. This is first report of such an association.

[DOOR (deafness, onychodystrophy, osteodystrophy, mental retardation) syndrome].

Authors highlight the difficulties of syndrome identification through reporting the first case of DOOR syndrome in Hungary (the 28th case worldwide). The awareness and appropriate weighing of the importance of vestigial nails (onychodystrophy) was crucial for the correct diagnosis. Based on the normal level of 2-oxoglutarate excretion, the patient can be categorized as type 2. This is associated with better survival, which does not mean a substantial difference in quality of life. Although, prenatal diagnosis is not possible at present, knowledge of the enzyme defect and detection of the reduc

[The cleft hand. Proposal of a classification based on 279 cleft hands].

PURPOSE: We propose a new classification of cleft hand based on the analysis of our own cases and a literature search. METHODS: We analysed clinical data and radiographs of 31 patients with 54 cleft hands in addition to 225 cleft hands from the literature, and classified them with the help of schematic drawings of radiographs in extension of the proposals of Blauth and Schneider-Sickert. RESULTS: Classification of cleft hand: 1. Median cleft hands without involvement of thumb and small finger. 2. Medioradial cleft hands with thumb affected but with detectable residuals preserved. 3. Radial c

A report of two cases of Werner's syndrome and review of the literature.

Two cases of Werner's syndrome are reported. The first case is that of a man with grey hair since his 20s, and alopecia since aged about 50 years. At the age of 53 years, Werner's syndrome was diagnosed, along with a malignant soft tissue tumour of the hand. The patient underwent ray amputation for the tumour. The subsequent histopathological diagnosis was synovial cell sarcoma, and the patient died of lung metastasis at 15 weeks postsurgery. The second case is that of a woman diagnosed with diabetes mellitus when aged 34 years. At 39 years, a bilateral cataract was diagnosed and at 40 years,

Ophthalmo-acromelic syndrome: report and review.

The ophthalmo-acromelic syndrome of Waardenburg is an autosomal recessive trait comprising eye malformations ranging from true anophthalmia to mild microphthalmia with acromelic malformations. Some 29 affected individuals have been reported since Waardenburg's first report in 1935 [Waardenburg et al., 1961]. We report on a new case with bilateral anophthalmia and typical limb malformations. The patient also was found to have interruption of the inferior vena cava with azygos continuation as an additional finding. The previous reports are reviewed to elucidate the spectrum of the syndrome.
