Analgesic Effects of Acupressure on Jing-jiaji Acupoints in a Rat Model of Cervical Spondylotic Radiculopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is increasingly prevalent, causing neck pain and radiating symptoms. As alternatives to surgery, acupressure stimulation of Jing-jiaji acupoints therapies have gained traction albeit lacking evidence. METHODS: Rats underwent spinal cord compression modeling CSR or sham surgery, alongside normal controls. A week post-surgery, CSR rats underwent no intervention or standardized acupressure of Jing-jiaji acupoints at 2, 4 or 6N. Sensory, locomotor and electrophysiological functions were assessed along with tissue analyses for pain mediators. R

Potentiation of cortico-spinal output via targeted electrical stimulation of the motor thalamus.

Cerebral white matter lesions prevent cortico-spinal descending inputs from effectively activating spinal motoneurons, leading to loss of motor control. However, in most cases, the damage to cortico-spinal axons is incomplete offering a potential target for therapies aimed at improving volitional muscle activation. Here we hypothesize that, by engaging direct excitatory connections to cortico-spinal motoneurons, stimulation of the motor thalamus could facilitate activation of surviving cortico-spinal fibers thereby immediately potentiating motor output. To test this hypothesis, we identify opt

Dysfunction of specific auditory fibers impacts cortical oscillations, driving an autism phenotype despite near-normal hearing.

Autism spectrum disorder is discussed in the context of altered neural oscillations and imbalanced cortical excitation-inhibition of cortical origin. We studied here whether developmental changes in peripheral auditory processing, while preserving basic hearing function, lead to altered cortical oscillations. Local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from auditory, visual, and prefrontal cortices and the hippocampus of BdnfPax2 KO mice. These mice develop an autism-like behavioral phenotype through deletion of BDNF in Pax2+ interneuron precursors, affecting lower brainstem functions, but not

Substantiating the Short Burst Duration in Cortical Myoclonus.

BACKGROUND: Myoclonus is characterized by involuntary, shock-like movements, of which cortical (CM) and non-cortical myoclonus (NCM) are most common. Electrophysiology can help differentiate between these subtypes; however, the diagnostic value of several features is largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the diagnostic value of the burst duration in distinguishing CM and NCM. METHODS: We manually identified the burst duration of 8 patients with CM, confirmed by electromyography-electroencephalography registration or somatosensory-evoked potentials, and 19 patients with NCM

Intrathecal delivery of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in traumatic spinal cord injury: Phase I trial.

Intrathecal delivery of autologous culture-expanded adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) could be utilized to treat traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). This Phase I trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03308565) included 10 patients with American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grade A or B at the time of injury. The study's primary outcome was the safety profile, as captured by the nature and frequency of adverse events. Secondary outcomes included changes in sensory and motor scores, imaging, cerebrospinal fluid markers, and somatosensory evoked potentials. The ma

Utility of narrow band imaging in a patient with a spinal cord cavernous malformation.

BACKGROUND: Complete removal of the lesion from the spinal cord cavernous malformation is crucial in patients with spinal cord cavernous malformation. Herein, we report that narrow-band imaging (NBI) is useful to confirm the complete removal of spinal cord cavernous malformations. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman was followed up for the past seven years due to multiple intracranial cavernous malformations. She reported abnormal pressure sensation in the right hip. Thoracic MRI revealed an intramedullary lesion at the 6th thoracic vertebra, suggesting hemorrhage from a spinal cord ca

Narrow band-pass filtered canonical correlation analysis for frequency identification in SSVEP signals.

Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) are generated in the parieto-occipital regions, accompanied by background noise and artifacts. A strong pre-processing method is required to reduce this background noise and artifacts. This study proposed a narrow band-pass filtered canonical correlation analysis (NBPFCCA) to recognize frequency components in SSVEP signals. The proposed method is tested on the publicly available 40 stimulus frequencies dataset recorded from 35 subjects and 4 class in-house dataset acquired from 10 subjects. The performance of the proposed NBPFCCA method is compared

Cocaine regulates sensory filtering in cortical pyramidal neurons.

Exposure to cocaine leads to robust changes in the structure and function of neurons within the mesocorticolimbic pathway. However, little is known about how cocaine influences the processing of information within the sensory cortex. We address this by using patch-clamp and juxtacellular voltage recordings and two-photon Ca2+ imaging in vivo to investigate the influence of acute cocaine exposure on layer 2/3 (L2/3) pyramidal neurons within the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Here, cocaine dampens membrane potential state transitions and decreases spontaneous somatic action potentials and Ca

Vitamin B3 Provides Neuroprotection via Antioxidative Stress in a Rat Model of Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

Supplementing with vitamin B3 has been reported to protect against retinal ganglion cell (RGC) damage events and exhibit multiple neuroprotective properties in a mouse model of optic nerve injury. In this study, a rat model of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy was used to assess the neuroprotective benefits of vitamin B3 (rAION). Vitamin B3 (500 mg/kg/day) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administered to the rAION-induced rats every day for 28 days. The vitamin B3-treated group had significantly higher first positive and second negative peak (P1-N2) amplitudes of flash visual-evoked pot

Modulation of Neuronal Activity and Saccades at Theta Rhythm During Visual Search in Non-human Primates.

Active exploratory behaviors have often been associated with theta oscillations in rodents, while theta oscillations during active exploration in non-human primates are still not well understood. We recorded neural activities in the frontal eye field (FEF) and V4 simultaneously when monkeys performed a free-gaze visual search task. Saccades were strongly phase-locked to theta oscillations of V4 and FEF local field potentials, and the phase-locking was dependent on saccade direction. The spiking probability of V4 and FEF units was significantly modulated by the theta phase in addition to the ti

Hyperexcitable and immature-like neuronal activity in the auditory cortex of adult rats lacking the language-linked CNTNAP2 gene.

The contactin-associated protein-like 2 gene, CNTNAP2, is a highly penetrant risk gene thought to play a role in the genetic etiology of language-related disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and developmental language disorder. Despite its candidacy for influencing language development, few preclinical studies have examined the role of CNTNAP2 in auditory processing. Using in vivo and in vitro electrophysiological recordings in a rat model with translational validity, we report that a loss of the Cntnap2 gene function caused immature-like cortical evoked potentials, delayed multiunit re

Pituitary apoplexy without chiasm compression: A case report.

The present report presents a rare case in which a patient with pituitary apoplexy (PA) without compression of the optic chiasm experienced diagnosable visual impairment in the ensuing months. Endocrinologically, the condition was a prolactinoma followed by bleeding into the pituitary gland. Due to the unexplained functional changes in the patient, an electrophysiological examination (pattern electroretinogram and pattern visual evoked potentials) was performed, which verified a bilateral non-inflammatory neurogenic lesion. This finding was confirmed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (f

Enhancement of self-sustained muscle activity through external dead space ventilation appears to be associated with hypercapnia.

We reported that external dead space ventilation (EDSV) enhanced self-sustained muscle activity (SSMA) of the human soleus muscle, which is an indirect observation of plateau potentials. However, the main factor for EDSV to enhance SSMA remains unclear. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of EDSV-induced hypercapnia, hypoxia, and hyperventilation on SSMA. In Experiment 1 (n = 11; normal breathing [NB], EDSV, hypoxia, and voluntary hyperventilation conditions) and Experiment 2 (n = 9; NB and normoxic hypercapnia [NH] conditions), SSMA was evoked by electrical train stimu

Holistic Integration in the Processing of Chinese Characters as Revealed by Electroencephalography Frequency Tagging.

It is debated whether perceptual expertise of nonface objects, such as visual words, is indicated by holistic processing, which is regarded as a marker of perceptual expertise of faces. We address this question by frequency-tagged electroencephalography. Different parts of real or pseudo Chinese characters are presented at distinctive frequencies (6 or 7.2 Hz), which induce frequency-tagged steady-state visual-evoked potentials at occipital brain areas. The intermodulation response (e.g., 6 + 7.2 = 13.2 Hz) would emerge when holistic integration takes place. Our results suggest that the interm

Brainstem dysfunction in critically ill patients.

The brainstem conveys sensory and motor inputs between the spinal cord and the brain, and contains nuclei of the cranial nerves. It controls the sleep-wake cycle and vital functions via the ascending reticular activating system and the autonomic nuclei, respectively. Brainstem dysfunction may lead to sensory and motor deficits, cranial nerve palsies, impairment of consciousness, dysautonomia, and respiratory failure. The brainstem is prone to various primary and secondary insults, resulting in acute or chronic dysfunction. Of particular importance for characterizing brainstem dysfunction and i

A New Early Stopping Method for P300 Spellers.

In event-related potentials based brain-computer interfaces, the responses evoked by a well defined stimuli sequence are usually averaged to overcome the limitations caused by the intrinsic poor EEG signal-to-noise ratio. This, however, implies that the time necessary to detect the brain signals increases and then that the communication rate can be dramatically reduced. A common approach is then at first to estimate an optimal fixed number of responses to be averaged on a calibration data set and then to use this number on the online/testing dataset. In contrast to this strategy, several early

[Differentiating cochlear synaptopathies into different hearing disorders].

Due to demographic change and altered recreational behavior, a rapid increase in hearing deficits is expected in the next 20-30 years. Consequently, the risk of age-related loss of speech discrimination, tinnitus, hyperacusis, or-as recently shown-dementia, will also increase. There are increasing indications that the loss of specific hearing fibers in humans and animals is involved in various hearing disorders. This fiber loss can be caused by cochlear synaptopathy or deafferentation and does not necessarily lead to clinically measurable threshold changes. Animal experiments have shown that r
