BACKGROUND: Nerve injuries remain a challenging complication after shoulder surgery. While most resolve spontaneously, some require surgical intervention. This study describes the characteristics of patients sustaining nerve injuries following shoulder surgery, evaluates referral patterns to nerve surgeons, and characterizes nerve surgeries performed and their outcomes. Increased awareness of these injuries allows patients and providers to be better informed regarding the appropriate management when these complications occur.
METHODS: A retrospective review of referrals with nerve injuries fo

BACKGROUND: Most patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used to assess outcomes after anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) focus on pain and function. Although strength is considered an important component of function, only the Constant-Murley score (CMS) includes an objective measurement of shoulder strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between shoulder elevation strength (SES) and PROMs after aTSA for the treatment of primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA).
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 605 patients enrolled in a multicenter clini

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the functional outcomes and humeral stress shielding of a reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) placed with either cement or press-fit fixation. The hypothesis was that there would be no difference in functional outcomes or stress shielding.
METHODS: We performed a multicenter retrospective review of primary RSAs performed with standard-length stems. The stems were identical in geometry and coating with the only variable being whether the stems were secured with cement or by a press-fit technique. The functional outcomes and radiographs of 93

PURPOSE: To analyze the utility of arthroscopic biopsies for detection of periprosthetic infection in painful shoulder arthroplasty without objective signs of infection.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent a diagnostic arthroscopy for painful shoulder arthroplasty from June 2012 through July 2018 was performed. Patients with a subsequent revision shoulder arthroplasty after diagnostic arthroscopy were included. Arthroscopic tissue culture results were compared with the culture results of intraoperative tissue samples obtained at the time of open revision surgery. A

PURPOSE: The reverse shoulder prost hesis (rTSA) is now implanted by the same percentage of anatomic shoulder prosthesis in the USA. Scapular notching and loss of extrarotation have been underlined as complication at long-term follow-up due to the Grammont design. The current trend to reduce those limits is to position both components lateralized. As the role of the subscapularis tendon in this new rTSA design is unclear, the purpose of this study is to quantify rTSA outcomes in patients with or without subscapularis tendon suture.
METHODS: The surgery was performed by the same orthopaedic su

BACKGROUND: Humeral loosening is an uncommon etiology for revision shoulder arthroplasty. We aimed to evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes of a short-stem press-fit humeral component after primary total shoulder arthroplasty.
METHODS: We reviewed our patient database, from January 2008 to December 2011, for primary total shoulder arthroplasties performed with a short-stem press-fit humeral component. Radiographs and clinical outcomes were evaluated in the immediate postoperative period and at the most recent follow-up, with at least 24 months of data for all patients.
RESULTS: The

Traumatic rotator cuff tears in patients younger than 25 years are rare events, with few reports in the literature. When compared with the more mature shoulder, the young, healthy supraspinatus tendon is a robust tendon that is able to absorb a significant amount of energy before tendon failure. Therefore, the diagnosis of a rotator cuff tear can be often overlooked in this population due to the patient's age. This is a report of traumatic supraspinatus repairs in patients younger than 25 years. Nine patients younger than 25 years were identified with a posttraumatic supraspinatus tear as visu

BACKGROUND: Some patients with rotator cuff tears complain of pain, whereas others are asymptomatic. Previous studies have pointed out the presence of active bone metabolism in the painful shoulder, identified with increased radioisotope uptake during bone scintigraphy.
HYPOTHESIS: Shoulders with symptomatic rotator cuff tears will demonstrate higher radioisotope uptake than shoulders with asymptomatic tears with bone scintigraphy, reflecting active bone metabolism in symptomatic tears.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.

CONTEXT: Type I superior labrum anterior-posterior (SLAP) lesions involve degenerative fraying and probably are not the cause of shoulder pain. Type II to IV SLAP lesions are tears of the labrum.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of patient history and the active compression, anterior slide, and crank tests for type I and type II to IV SLAP lesions.
DESIGN: Cohort study.
SETTING: Clinic.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-five patients (47 men, 8 women; age = 40.6 ± 15.1 years) presenting with shoulder pain.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are widespread among computer users and costly to the health care system. Workstation setup and worker postures contribute to upper-extremity and neck symptoms among computer users. Ergonomic interventions such as work risk analysis and workstation modifications can improve workers' symptoms. However, ergonomic interventions do not appear to be a common component of traditional physical therapy treatment.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 26-year-old woman with right upper-extremity and neck pain referred for physical therapy. A

BACKGROUND: The treatment of symptomatic spinoglenoid cysts has varied from observation, needle aspiration, and open excision to arthroscopic decompression. The purpose of the present study was to prospectively assess whether labral repair alone would lead to cyst resolution and pain relief.
METHODS: Forty-two patients with a posterosuperior labral tear and a ganglion cyst at the spinoglenoid notch were treated with arthroscopic débridement of the glenoid rim and labral repair, either with a resorbable tack or a suture anchor. Patients ranged in age from twenty-three to sixty-eight years. Sev

BACKGROUND: Static and dynamic posterior shoulder instability (PSI) are associated with a higher, more horizontal acromion providing poor posterior humeral head (HH) coverage. The current surgical treatment yields unsatisfactory long-term outcomes with high recurrence rates in dynamic and failure to restore joint concentricity in static PSI. We hypothesized that restoring physiological acromio-glenoid relations would prevent recurrence of dynamic and positively influence static PSI.
METHODS: This study reports the outcome after a "scapular (acromion and glenoid) corrective osteotomy for poste

OBJECTIVES: Following a consensus statement from a multidisciplinary UK workshop, a structured examination schedule was developed for the diagnosis and classification of musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb. The aim of this study was to test the repeatability and the validity of the newly developed schedule in a hospital setting.
METHOD: 43 consecutive referrals to a soft tissue rheumatism clinic (group 1) and 45 subjects with one of a list of specific upper limb disorders (including shoulder capsulitis, rotator cuff tendinitis, lateral epicondylitis and tenosynovitis) (group 2), were

Eighty-two patients with traumatic anterior shoulder instability were treated with an arthroscopic transglenoid multiple suture technique (Caspari's method) and followed-up for more than 2 years. A retrospective analysis of the clinical outcome was performed to determine the factors related to poor results. The mean age at operation was 21 years (range, 13 to 50 years) and the mean follow-up period was 40 months (range, 24 to 70 months). According to the status of the ligament-labrum complex and the glenoid bone defect, the Bankart lesions were classified into five types arthroscopically. Ther

BackgroundSynovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare proliferative disorder characterized by the metaplastic formation of cartilaginous and osteochondral nodules in the synovial membrane of joints, tendon sheaths, or bursae. It most commonly affects the knee, followed in frequency by the elbow, ankle, hip, and shoulder. Although SC usually presents as a monoarticular condition, bilateral, extra-articular, or multifocal involvement is uncommon.Case presentationWe report a 78-year-old patient with a history of cerebrovascular event and coronary artery disease who presented with bilateral intra-artic

BACKGROUND: Larsen syndrome is an extremely rare congenital disorder characterized by craniofacial anomalies and multiple skeletal deformities such as short stature, kyphoscoliosis of the spine, cervical spine instability, clubfeet, and joint dislocations especially of the knee and hip joints. Musculoskeletal pain in a case of Larsen syndrome signals red flags as these patients have various congenital anomalies. However, myofascial trigger points could be a cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain in these patients. Myofascial trigger points are easy to diagnose and treat.

Background: The risks of end-range movements for people with osteoporosis, specifically at the hips and shoulder, are not well understood. Objectives: To synthesize literature on the safety of stretching for people with osteoporosis by searching: 1) biomechanical literature to determine how much force results from an end-range maneuverer and is required to fracture joint components (focusing on the hip joint) and 2) clinical literature to describe techniques used, populations studied, effects, and reported adverse events. Methods: We conducted two separate search strategies in PubMed, EMBASE,

An 11-year-old boy presented with three days' history of blunt trauma to the left shoulder due to a fall to the ground. The boy was taken to the traditional practitioner, who applied a very tight bandage over a piece of cartoon on the upper left humerus, which resulted in progressive pain and swelling of the whole left upper limb and impairment of movement and sensation. The tight bandage was removed after 48 h and fasciotomy was performed at Aljamhuri Hospital in Taiz, Yemen. The child was brought to our hospital after the family was informed about the need for left forearm amputation. We per
