BACKGROUND: First-trimester abortions especially cervical dilation and suction aspiration are associated with pain despite various methods of pain control.
STUDY DESIGN: Following the guidelines for a Cochrane review, we systematically searched for and reviewed randomized controlled trials comparing methods of pain control in first-trimester surgical abortion at less than 14 weeks gestational age using electric or manual suction aspiration. Outcomes included intra- and postoperative pain, side effects, recovery measures and satisfaction.
RESULTS: We included 40 trials with 5131 participants.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of safety and efficacy of dexmedetomidine in deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 23 patients, candidates for DBS for Parkinson's disease, Tourette syndrome, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, was randomized in two groups: dexmedetomidine group and control group. Standard anesthesiologic parameters were recorded and analyzed, together with the need for other medications. A ten-degree scale (visual analog scale) assessing patient discomfort during DBS also was recorded at the end of surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) has been used and shown to be safe under monitored anesthesia care (MAC). We present the results of the first study, to our knowledge, assessing the safety and feasibility of same-day discharge in patients undergoing treatment with the PED, using MAC.
METHODS: A total of 130 patients with 143 cerebral aneurysms (CAs) were identified. Patients were treated under MAC with the PED. All of the patients were counseled preoperatively about the elective nature of the procedure and the same-day discharge.
