Mobility metrics in individuals with and without an indication for knee arthroplasty: An explorative analysis.

BACKGROUND: It is conceivable that candidates for total knee arthroplasty due to knee osteoarthritis have poorer walking ability than people who do not have an indication for total knee arthroplasty. This study explored the discriminative ability of mobility metrics between individuals with and without an indication for total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: Mobility metrics were collected with inertial sensors on the same day as the consultation with the orthopedic surgeon in which the decision for total knee arthroplasty eligibility was made. Inertial sensors on both feet, lower back and trunk w

Readability and Quality of Online Information on Osteochondral Knee Injuries: An Objective Assessment.

Background In the modern healthcare era, the internet serves as a major source of information for patients. However, prior studies have shown that online medical information frequently exceeds the recommended readability levels, limiting patient understanding. In the US, the average reading level is between seventh and eighth grade, while leading health organisations recommend that patient information not exceed a sixth-grade level. This study evaluates the readability and quality of publicly accessible online content related to osteochondral injuries of the knee. Methods A systematic search w

Loading of the artificial knee during early rehabilitation and physiotherapy : an in vivo study.

AIMS: This retrospective observational study aimed to determine the in vivo joint loads in the knee after total knee arthroplasty during early postoperative rehabilitation involving different physiotherapy exercises and to analyze how these loads change over the first three weeks postoperatively. METHODS: Nine patients (six males, three females) with a primary instrumented total knee replacement participated in the study. A total of 19 selected physical therapy exercises of varying load levels were performed on the ninth (SD 3) and 21st (SD 6) postoperative day. During these sessions, the pea

Health economic evaluation of microprocessor and non-microprocessor controlled prosthetic knees.

BACKGROUND: Use of a microprocessor-controlled knee (MPK) compared to a non-microprocessor-controlled knee (NMPK) can lead to improved walking ability, confidence and satisfaction. However, the MPK is more expensive than the NMPK and it is unknown whether the higher costs outweigh the potential benefits. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness of MPKs and NMPKs from a societal perspective in the Netherlands. METHODOLOGY: Participants completed the Dutch version of the EuroQol - five dimensions - five levels (EQ-5D-5L) to assess health-related quality of life, three sub

The effects of multiple myeloma on total knee arthroplasty outcomes: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common orthopedic procedure, yet outcomes in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) remain poorly understood since there are limited studies. As a result, the aim was to assess how MM affects outcomes of patients undergoing TKA. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, patients with MM who underwent TKA were identified using a TriNetX national database from 2005 to 2024. These patients were matched to controls without MM using propensity score matching based on age, sex and relevant comorbidities. Postoperative complication rates, readmission, r

[Acupuncture and moxibustion for rice body bursitis of knee joint: a case report].

This article reports the differentiation and treatment experience of acupuncture and moxibustion for a case of rice body bursitis of knee joint, which could be classified as "crane-knee wind" in TCM. The disease location involves the meridian sinews of the knee region, and is deficiency in origin and excess in symptom. Referencing the classical formula Sishen Jian for crane-knee wind, a staged acupuncture-moxibustion protocol was implemented: at the initial phase (the 1st week), quintuple needling was delivered at local points i.e. bilateral Heding (EX-LE2) and Xuehai (SP10), to regulate the l

Unveiling Prognostic and Diagnostic Biomarkers in Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis: A Targeted Review.

Osteoarthritis is a multifactorial condition marked by the gradual deterioration of joint cartilage, synovial inflammation, alterations in the subchondral bone and changes in the surrounding soft tissues. Clinical assessments and patient-reported outcome measures can identify pathological tissue alterations in osteoarthritis, in conjunction with radiographic evaluation of osteophytes, bone sclerosis, and joint space reduction. Although available treatments can help manage symptoms, early identification of prognostic factors for osteoarthritis progression is crucial for personalizing interventi

Arthroscopic Lysis of Adhesions for the Management of Arthrofibrosis Following Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Arthrofibrosis remains a challenging complication to manage following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Early arthrofibrosis, occurring within 12 weeks of TKA, is more responsive to manipulation under anesthesia, whereas late presentations often require surgical intervention. Arthroscopic lysis of adhesions (aLOA) has emerged as a reliable treatment when non-operative measures fail. The procedure involves thorough arthroscopic debridement followed by gentle manipulation and immediate rehabilitation. Published literature has demonstrated that aLOA consistently improves knee ROM by approximately 20

Effect of total knee arthroplasty on the spinopelvic parameters: A systemic review and metanalysis.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal spinopelvic alignment (SSA) is essential for preserving a stable and effective upright posture and locomotion. Although alterations in the SSA are recognised to induce compensatory modifications in the pelvis, hips, and knees, the inverse relationship concerning knee pathology undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been examined by a limited number of studies, yielding inconclusive results. AIM: To generate evidence of the effect of TKA on the SSA from existing literature. METHODS: Databases like PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus were used to identify articles related to

The effect of varus deformity on rotational geometry of the distal femur in osteoarthritic knees.

BACKGROUND: Accurate rotational positioning of the femoral component is one of the most important factors for successful total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The effect of varus deformity severity on distal femoral condylar geometry in the axial plane remains unclear. The purpose was to investigate the relationship between varus deformity severity and change in distal femoral posterior condyle phenotype. METHODS: A total 400 patients who underwent TKA for medial osteoarthritis were enrolled between August 2015 and May 2021. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan was used. The angle formed by su

The Minimally Invasive Posterior Approach: A Novel Technique for Shrapnel Removal in the Knee.

Retained periarticular missiles are usually overlooked, though they could lead to several delayed complications, which include infection, mechanical symptoms, synovitis due to lead particle deposition, lead arthropathy, and systemic lead poisoning. Retrieval of this shrapnel could be open or arthroscopic. The study reports a successful retrieval of retained periarticular shrapnel from the posterior compartment of the knee using the minimally invasive posterior approach. It presents the current literature review regarding this approach and various modifications. In conclusion, the minimally inv

Arthroscopic Treatment of Isolated Tophaceous Gout of the Knee: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus fractures are uncommon in children, accounting for <5% of pediatric fractures, with glenohumeral dislocation being an even rarer occurrence. These injuries are challenging due to the complex shoulder anatomy and the risk of growth disturbances, as the proximal humeral physis contributes ~80% of humeral growth. While many fractures can be managed conservatively, severe displacement or associated dislocations, such as Neer-Horwitz Type IV fractures, may require surgical intervention. Treatment options include K-wires, elastic stable intramedullary nailing, and plat
