OBJECTIVES: In the elderly population, chronic diseases are common determinants of mobility limitations and comorbidity consistently shows a strong association with functional status. This study was designed to evaluate the role of single chronic diseases and of their combination on functional recovery after rehabilitative treatment in disabled elderly patients.
DESIGN: With respect to the difference in magnitude of their disabling effect, diseases were classified into 2 groups: "more disabling" diseases (COPD, heart failure, peripheral artery diseases, diabetes, and not life-threatening canc

IMPORTANCE: Early landmark trials excluding dialysis patients showed carotid endarterectomy (CEA) decreased stroke risk compared with medical management. Dialysis dependence has been associated with poor outcomes after CEA in small studies, but, to our knowledge, there are no large studies evaluating outcomes of CEA in this patient group.
OBJECTIVE: To delineate perioperative and long-term outcomes after CEA in dialysis-dependent patients in a large national database.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective review of all patients who underwent CEA in the US Renal Disease System-Me

BACKGROUND: In the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy HIV is now viewed as a chronic disease. Although people living with HIV are living longer lives, they are prone to a number of disabilities. Home-based rehabilitation has been shown to be an effective means of improving quality of life and function for people with a wide range of chronic diseases. There is a dearth of evidence, however, related to home-based rehabilitation interventions for people living with HIV, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa - the region with the highest global prevalence of HIV.

Based on its ability to predict consequential outcomes, gait speed has been recommended as a "vital sign" for older individuals. Recommendations notwithstanding, the value of comfortable gait speed as a measure is limited unless clinicians can use it to identify real changes in performance over time. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to broadly describe the responsiveness of comfortable gait speed measured from patients admitted to short-term rehabilitation. For 136 consecutive patients who met inclusion and exclusion criteria (mean age=73.6 years), information regarding assistance, de
